When, oh when will all those retailers with panettone do the decent thing and get it in the sale? I am esp. eyeing up the ones hanging up in EDD - but I'll be damned if I'll pay more than a tenner for one. (They are currently being sold for in excess of twenty notes). Since so many people on da forum seem to be detoxing (ghastly word, that), surely demand is at an all time low?? Come on, retailers....slash those prices!

As a Panettone fan I can guarantee you won't be disappointed by those at Lidl. I tried one to see whether at ?2.99 they could be any good and they are! Just without any expensive crunchy sugar or fancy toppings on the outside.

I think I'll pop down there this week and get another...

Italian bakers produce some 117 million panettone and pandoro cakes every Christmas -- worth 579 million euros (416 million pounds). By law they must be made according to strict rules, including using only butter and beer yeast.

But those rules do not apply abroad, meaning exported Italian cakes may not be up to scratch, and foreign-made versions may only bear a vague resemblance to the tall, puffy, golden desserts prized by Italians.

"We can't let all these imitators use a name, a brand that gives them a link to territory that isn't theirs -- in a way they are mocking consumers,"

Allfornun, the LIDL ones are actually made in Italy, but I take your point. So is plenty of crappy pasta and I can't bear non-bronze die product.

I find it hard to imagine that a twelve quid panettone could be four times better, but I am now tempted to buy a more expensive one from somewwhere (on sale, of course). Perhaps you would consider trying the LIDL one and letting us know your opinion.

Unless that's below you of course.....

There is nothing poncey about Pannettone, just because you ED foodies relate ponceyness to price then it is no wonder things just get marked up and up and up ! And personaly I think if you start to get too involved in someone's business, if it was me, you 'd be in the fryer with the coley. - And it's not the Rye it's Peckham Common actually !

    • I’m not sure how many other people have experienced this; but both me and one of my friends have the same story. Around Crawthew Grove and Crystal Palace Road: I was followed by a large fox right on my heel. At first I didn’t notice because I had my headphones on, but then I noticed my shadow had an extra lump in it, funnily enough, it was a fox, very very close to my feet. Even if I sped up walking it just tried to get closer - it was quite frightening actually, it was quite clear that it wanted to nip me. I didn’t know what to do so, I started to reprimand the fox and walked slowly away from it, facing it - which it didn’t seem to like and backed off a bit. I then proceeded to speed-walk away.   Quite frankly, the whole situation was quite embarrassing and a little bit frightful as I’d never had a fox even come up to me. I’ve heard of particularly curious foxes that might come up to someone who beckons them, and maybe even bite that person, but I’ve never heard of a fox chasing someone. The amount of confidence that it had was incredible.    When it happened, I was on the way to see some friends, and once I had told one of them, she told me the same thing happened to her.  if anyone else knows anything about this bitey fox then let me know!
    • Another recommendation for Andy. I needed an old kitchen removed as an emergency. Andy came over quickly and did a fantastic job. I have used Andy a few times. He is punctual, helpful and always does an  excellent job.
