since Tuesday my burglar alarm keeps going off every hour for twenty minutes. I phoned the council as they were the ones who put it in, but they are saying they won't fix it anymore.

I phoned up adt and they won't except cash payment as I only have a post office account.

any advice please on what to do.

If you don't have animals (or a floating, silvered helium balloon - it happened to me!) setting the alarm off, then it's most likely a faulty sensor - and/ or an infra red one with a cobweb over it. The infra red sensors can last as few as 5 years, and do need to be kept clean of cobwebs. Also the back-up batteries (in case of mains failure) only now have a 3-4 year life, and will need replacing. It's possible that's what triggering the alarm to sound.

I have found Martin Curry of Security Masters (independent in Herne Hill - 07947 321 132) very good and helpful. He will at least be able to isolate the alarm to stop it going off.

I work in the security industry and my honest advice is to steer clear of Verisure. I've heard they can give a hard sale, they don't offer policed monitoring, there is no external siren and there are expensive ongoing costs compared to most alarm companies. They do a cheap install followed by expensive ongoing monthly payments. (Sorry SBPy)

If you need alarm work carried out I recommend using a local NACOSS Approved company. You can search around online, ask friends and neighbours or check on nsi.org.uk.

good luck! (sounds like this issue is resolved now anyway)

- (edited to say sorry to SBPy and also to say I'm not in the habit of slagging off other companies but having worked in the industry for many years I feel uncomfortable with the way Verisure go about there business) I have heard quite a lot of negative feedback from my customers. Just being honest...

Even if you disconnect the mains and remove the battery, most alarms will still sound because they are ultimately powered by a large capacitor.

This is a safety issue to stop burglars cutting the mains power and removing the battery.

Hence when there is a power cut, if the alarm sounds it means the battery is flat and so it cannot keep the sounder circuit open. In this event, the capacitor steps in and powers the sounder.

    • One of the issues is that under this government, the so called black hole of £20 billion has, according to some, risen to £50 billion. Which will result in even more taxes. I was always taught to cut my coat according to my cloth, which would in an ideal world mean having to halt or stop projects or services until the deficit is down to a manageable level. Increasing taxes has a limit (the Laffer Curve https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laffer_curve)  and also damages the economy and the publics ability to spend.  If Labour want to turn things around they are going to have to face some uncomfortable decisions on where to cut their ambition.
    • "Country before Party" is Starmer's motto. Lucy Powell, Burnham and other senior cabinet ministers briefing against Starmer, describing the situation as 'terminal', and publicly condemning him is not putting the country first. They'll be no better than the Tories if they enforce on us a new PM and the political dissatisfaction of the electorate will explode.  Labour needs to get its house in order, but there are too many factions and, just like the Tories at the end, it doesn't know what it is anymore. I think the situation is unsolvable.
    • I saw that too but it was already sold unfortunately -  so if anyone else has one they’re not using I’m still interested! Thanks!
