Where can I obtain a decent piece of fried fish (and chips) in East Dulwich?

The pubs supply ghastly deep-fried, tasteless from frozen. The few remaining local ?chippies? that I have tried convert their fish to a texture-less sludge contained within a tepid coating of limp batter. Most of these outlets seem to thrive on sales of kebabs, burgers, pies and sausages. I adore simple cod-and-chips but haven?t found anything remotely pleasant nearby. I?d be most grateful to be advised of anywhere that supplies nice, firm flakey cod, fried in a crisp batter, accompanied by hot, recently deep-fried chips, together lightly sprinkled with salt and vinegar, preferably served in pages taken from yesterday?s ?Daily Mirror?.

Please help

which chip shops in the immediate area have you tried? I don't mean the silly burger bars and pubs but actual fish and chip shops...?

The best tasting chips IMHO are cooked in beef dripping and because its boiling point is higher than vegetable oil it expels all water from the chip and seals the outside so the fat doesn't get in, where as vegetable oil doesn't seal the outside so quickly and the oil gets absorbed back into the chip.

(Read Fat by Jennifer McLuhan for more fascinating facts of this ilk )

Now if you find me a chip shop that cooks in beef dripping (sorry vegans) then I would be a happy person !

Do you have any link to the list, would be interested to see it. I passed Ken's one day and there seemed to be some filming going on, wonder was the Jay and his gang.

also do the dripping thing.

That's right they do.. They fry in oil for Younger people and Dripping for older / elderly folk.

Unless you specify what you prefer.

Codfellas also have seating to eat in. I used to be a regular there but now have a eating disorder

and cannot manage to eat a full meal. Large portions, reasonable prices. Too far to take away. food would go cold.

I now use Semas.. 1 Min walk. Seems to vary but friendly staff and fish cooked to order.

Large portions.. Cod and Chips ?8.70

    • The editing was clumsy and made it look like he said something specific, that he did not. That is obviously wrong, and the BBC have apologised and people have lost their jobs as a result. That said, the overall impression - that Trump repeatedly stated (and still does) that the election had been stolen, that he encouraged his supporters to march on the Capitol, that he repeatedly called for people to fight - in short that he inspired a violent insurrection - is entirely true.  Trump used the word 'fight' 20 times. Whilst his speech was going on, his supporters chanted "Take the Capitol", "Invade the Capitol", "Storm the Capitol" and "Fight for Trump" The documentary generally, was not misleading. The real scandal is that Trump wasn't tried and ended up back in power. I do think that we need to stop normalising Trump. He has a criminal history and is openly corrupt. He has shown himself to be a threat to democracy. The US right and their tech billionaire allies are having an malign impact on UK politics and culture, interfering both directly and indirectly, in ways that we should be doing more to challenge.
    • @beansprout I don't think Gails has closed, Do you mean Megans? I've never seen waiters at Gails. If you do mean Megans unfortunately I believe its just closed for refurbishment to be relaunched as some similarly awful 'concept'
    • Staff have changed and owner now taking a more active role….she is such a nice+lady so I encourage you to try again . I am all for supporting local business and personally very glad after appalling service earlier this year Gail’s has closed.. Change of staff and chefs were unreal.. In one month alone must have had at least 4 new chefs plus god knows how many waiters/ waitresses.. when Ai saw that happening, new it was gonna be down hill all the way.
