I went into the Peckham collection branch today and a team are coming to clear the backlog next week - but then the problem will return.


Apparently it?s stemming from very poor management and a rift between ED postie culture (lots of sick leave, poorly motivated and begrudging of the move to Peckham) and Peckham posties. Managers not managing properly, post left in the frames, workers not clearing others workers backlogs - sounds grim in there.

Thanks for that info. Do you know if they're an RM employee in their home town, or maybe a vetted regular temp agency worker, or ...?

Apparently ED posties all got ?5k bonus to move to Peckham. I asked if the closure of Silvester Road caused the problem but was told it was the ED posties attitude. They?ve been taking huge amounts of sick leave and refusing to clear each other?s backlogs. That?s why the mail isn?t coming through.


Sounds like a truly demotivated and dysfunctional workforce. The managers are aware of the situation but are completely ineffectual. It?s almost impossible (and very expensive) to dismiss posties - bar for theft and deserting your mail.

Or is it a case of a privatised company shifting blame onto workforce?

Friend ordered a Christmas gift for us..wasn't deliver, ordered again..wasn't delivered...ordered again..was delivered this week. Both previous items were sent out by the company, my friend only had to pay once, but the company has lost money on two items that I assume are at the bottom of a pile of 'back-log' items?

I wonder what the function of the managers actually is, if they are ineffectual.

Not necessarily re travel - it may be that some posties supported the move because they live somewhere that was an easier/cheaper commute to Higshore Road. Unless they live further south than SE22 I don't see the change of commute costing them more.

Post-people are most likely to 'know' first and 2nd line managers (those actually directing them). Their roles will be allocating work, work-rostas, coverage and so on. Also immediate disciplinary matters. And probably involved with recruitment and needs for casuals, although authorisation is likely to be at more senior levels. Overall tactical management will be at third line and above, who will not (perhaps) be much involved in day-to-day management. Strategic management will be at regional level. It was initially a failure of strategic management (involved in closure decisions for Sylvester Road and transfer of work to Highshore Road) which started this mess, I'm guessing.


First and second line managers may be being identified as 'ineffectual' because they can't get more senior managers engaged in problem solving; authority for which probably doesn't lie with them (the junior management). You only see that your managers can't solve the problem, not that the blockage may be higher up.

We've had prescription medicines, reading glasses, Christmas gifts and more all have gone missing in the system since December.


Problem is that if the businesses sending this stuff will only use Royal Mail, there's nothing you can do but shop elsewhere.


Sadly we'll have to do that from now on as when you're talking about medicines and glasses, that's impacting things that are simply too important.

All my prescription medication has been delivered by Royal Mail within a day or two after Lloyds Direct (previously Echo) have processed it.


As has anything Covid test related.


I assumed Royal Mail was giving such items priority.

Fourth day on the trot receiving post. More deliveries this week than the the previous month.


Today's delivery included a small parcel (not a tracked one) that I ordered well after posting hours two days ago, was dispatched yesterday.


Seems the extra staff someone mentioned on the thread are making a differnce on my route at least.

I bumped into my regular postman today. He's off to Mexico with his 5k bonus next week. *insert rolley eyes*.


All I read here is blame for postal delays/non-deliveries on the recipient's end of the journey, East Dulwich/Peckham. Has no one considered that from the moment items are posted they have a long journey, often via several methods of transport, machinery for sorting etc etc. Things can, and do get lost during that journey. Putting the blame on postal workers/offices locally is unfair.

Agreed. All of this nonsense with the post started the day the sorting office transferred to Peckham.

Before the delivery office moved to Peckham, there might have been the occasional item "lost in the post".


That is a completely different thing from a situation where enormous amounts of incoming post have been piled up in a known place for months.

In fact for several months before the final DO closure the service from Sylvester Road was deteriorating - as staff moved on and weren't replaced. Cover for sickness, leave and rest days was already lapsing. So the 'crew' that eventually did move to Highshore road as the SE22 DO were already depleted - I imagine it was hoped to back fill vacancies (or at least cover them) from the original Peckham DO staff, but I suspect many did not want to move onto walks which required them to drive out to East Dulwich - cutting them off from the normal DO facilities (such as lavatories). So they have remained as two separate DOs working out of one site. And not helping each other. Unionisation is still comparatively strong in the Royal Mail, so management directives to work together (if not covered by agreements) would be ignored.

yes Sue, all read. I just think that 'bashing' the people that actually deliver our post isn't the right step. Higher up, yes.

    • Sophie, I have to thank you for bringing me squarely into 2025.  I was aware of 4G/5G USB dongles for single computers, and of being able to use smartphones for tethering 4G/5G, but hadn't realised that the four mobile networks were now providing home hub/routers, effectively mimicking the cabled broadband suppliers.  I'd personally stick to calling the mobile networks 4G/5G rather than wifi, so as not to confuse them with the wifi that we use within home or from external wifi hotspots. 4G/5G is a whole diffferent, wide-area set of  networks, and uses its own distinct wavebands. So, when you're saying wi-fi, I assume you're actually referring to the wide-area networks, and that it's not a matter of just having poor connections within your home local area network, or a router which is deficient.   If any doubt, the best test will be with a computer connected directly to the router by cable. Which really leaves me with only one maybe useful thing to say.  :) The Which pages at https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/broadband/article/what-is-broadband/what-is-4g-broadband-aUWwk1O9J0cW look pretty useful and informative. They include local area quality of coverage maps for the four providers (including 5G user reports I think) , where they say (and I guess it too is pretty common knowledge): Our survey of the best and worst UK mobile networks found that the most common issues mobile customers have are constantly poor phone signal and continuous brief network dropouts – and in fact no network in our survey received a five star rating for network reliability. 
    • 5G has a shorter range and is worse at penetrating obstacles between you and the cell tower, try logging into the router and knocking it back to 4G (LTE) You also need to establish if the problem is WiFi or cellular. Change the WiFi from 5GHz to 2.4GHz and you will get better WiFi coverage within your house If your WiFi is fine and moving to 4G doesn't help then you might be in a dead spot. There's lots of fibre deployed in East Dulwich
    • Weve used EE for the past 6 years. We're next to Peckham Rye. It's consistent and we've never had any outages or technical issues. We watch live streams for football and suffer no lags or buffering.   All the best.
