yet again on the back of a 15% price hike, BG announce 1/2 billion profits, how the fuck can they justify this. I appreciate they are a company and need to make a few bob but when families the length and breadth of the country are struggling to pay energy bills, surely the time has come for the gov,to get involved and sort out what is going on. the unfortunate thing is the energy companies have us by the knackers and dont they know it.

I can feel another free-market thread coming on after that one spadetownboy

You will get people saying that people's pensions are tied in with succesful companies so they need to do whatever etc etc

I'm aware of the arguments but for what it's worth I'm with you on this one

i changed a long time ago from british gas and basically change supplier every year, but the annoying this about these profits is that according to the news this morning, the majority were made early last year when wholesale gas prices were down but bg decided not to pass the decrease onto customers, morally thats not right, bit like not all the banks not passing on the recent interest rate cuts to mortages, and i,m still waiting for those bastard garages to drop their petrol prices even though oil prices are now down as well. right, rant over for this morning.

This price rise will make the headlines everywhere today: print and broadcast - just like all the other times it has happened (either with British Gas or any other company). And yet it will happen again and again.

The fact that British Gas are making so much money is not because they are thieving bastards, it's because people are lazy and have the memory span of a goldfish.

There's only so many times you can say to people "hey - spend two minutes on the internet or telephone and save ?150!" before you get bored of saying it and lose sympathy.

British are a bunch of thieving bastards and no mistake!!! I pay them ?35 to maintain my central heating and my combi boiler. I've had to call them out a couple of times in the last few months and have been charged an additional ?89 for a part to repair my boiler and another ?38 for a carbon monoxide detector, which I didn't ask them to supply, but apparently it is a legal requirement to have one. I wasn't given a choice, my wife was at home when all of this took place so I will be batting this back to them and asking them why I wasn't consulted first. I thought my ?35 covered everyting including parts and labour, clearly this is not the case!!! Gits.

ATG - go for it.

I believe, to be fair, that BG did reduce prices last year, or that's what I thought I heard on the Today programme earlier.

Wearing extra layers is a valid point. I know it's tangental to this thread, which is a chance for us to kick BG, but the less you use, the the less they get paid. *Bob* has a point too. I'm with nPower (or is it Npower?) and it's not that expensive (yet!). Nero

Nero, I had Npower knock on my door 3 times recently saying i MUST change supplier as they are the wholesaler and the cheapest, I almost fell for it the last time as the girl was cute blonde haired and blue eyed, then i just ended up slamming the door on her face as she was just talking a load of krap.
I had a similar experience of an extremely pushy nPower salesman on my doorstep - I use them for gas and he categorically stated that he could undercut my electricity bill even though he didn't know how much I was paying. When I pointed out that nPower were about to put up gas prices and how did I know that the same thing wouldn't happen if I used their electricity, he promised me that he had the power to keep my bills down no matter what! Around this point I asked him to leave!

Use BG properly then

I have the Homecare cover -s eems expensive, but....

it covers the taps/ CH/ Wiring/ Drains etc

Call them out rather than a plumber when you have a leaky tap or a bunged up drain - it soon makes sense

A stuck rad valve ? NO problem sir, all part of the service

A plumber would hit you for a hour + bits + vat = ?70

Im with British gas for both my gas and electrcity, My gas is not to bad as im now on a pre payment meter due to them estimating my bills, and getting me into debt, managed to get out of that debt and demanded they put a prepayment meter in.

Its my electricity im worried about which is quarterly.

Everything in my home is electric(except for the heating) i have considered getting a key meter but having a 4 year old and would rather no gas than electric so im staying quarterly but........Im dreading the bill last quarter was 267.00 proberley be bloody double this quarter

Totally agree they are Thieving Bastards

I'm a thieving bastard!

BG changed the meter 3 times at my last property and I received a bill showing a juicy ?500 credit. I queried it and they said it was correct. I pointed out that the meter changes were resetting to zero but they insisted it was correct. So I asked for a ?500 cheque which they sent and I promptly changed supplier to Atlantic Coal and Gas.

    • Immy, our 5yr old Tuxedo cat, has been missing from our home on Landcroft Rd for 24hrs.  She’s new to the area, very nervous, and is likely hiding in a bush/tree. PLEASE message msg if you see/find her. Many thanks, Claire
    • “54 Ea” must be 54, East Dulwich Road? Which is the other side of the road. Isn’t there a combined pay phone/ cash machine kiosk outside the Londis?
    • The co-op uses ATMs operated by Cardtronics, and they also operate a digital ATM service (meaning he could have made those transactions electronically).  That cashpoint is operated by Natwest. It sounds like he brought up their 'Get Cash' scheme screen as the distraction (a way that allows Natwest customers to withdraw cash without needing to use their card). So he was using a skimming device to steal your card in that moment, but brought up the Get Cash screen to distract you while he did that. Your confusion was just long enough for him to get away. Card thieves are incredibly slick. Here is some info on Natwest Get Cash for reference - 'To use a Get Cash code at a NatWest ATM, you first initiate the withdrawal through the NatWest mobile app, which generates a secure code. You then visit a compatible ATM (NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, or Tesco ATMs). At the ATM, press the "Enter" key and follow the on-screen prompts, entering the code twice. The code is valid for 3 hours, and if expired, funds will be recredited to your account.' I use that cashpoint all the time, so it's good to know if a local thief is targetting Natwest ATMs.
    • So, i've had time to think about ever step of this incident. The main points are: I'd entered my pin number and was on the screen/page where you put in how much you want to withdraw At exactly that point the guy appeared and said the machine had taken his card, and started waving his hands over screen A 'menu' option came up on screen with two choices, one bottom left, one bottom right The bottom left option said something about entering a code to continue with transaction The guy was saying "press that or it'll take your card" - I didn't press either but he might have I haven't ever seen these on-screen options before - I didn't enter any details The guy then disappeared I pressed the 'cancel' button on keypad - the physical keypad - same screen options remained - no card was returned Within 30 seconds of me realising card wasn't coming out I froze card on banking app and immediately had two txt msgs from bank saying transactions were being declined (but one for £251 had already gone though). The ref on bank statement for all three was: CARDTRONICS UK LTD BT KIOSK O/S 54 EA. Bank statement also said the date, time and that there was a £1.50 ATM withdrawl fee.  I checked to see if there's a cashpoint in newsagent next door, but there's not. The cashpoint at petrol station is free so no ATM fee there eiher.
