A while back I posted that I was going to contact the rail company to complain about the litter that gathers behind the fence. I did get a reply, telling me that it would be looked into. I'd copied the letter of complaint to Tessa Jowell, who, as TJMP, has replied to me.

She told me that the railway station is cleaned daily and that it is considering re-installing plastic sacks in hoops for rubbish. She also said that Network Rail is responsible for the area behind the mesh fence and that they clean the area from time to time. I went recently and it is cleaner. In time, says TJMP, TfL might take over the station, which, she implies, would be good because TfL's standards are higher than Network Rail.

I have seen people cleaning the actual station, sweeping rubbish, painting benches, etc., but they don't seem able to get into the fenced area where all the bottles and papers collect. I remember reading years ago that Southwark or Network Rail were going to let this fenced area grow a bit for the birds... but looks like a vulture wouldn't even go in there, sadly!

I work for Network Rail and know for a fact that they will respond to complaints about litter very quickly

The reason that litter builds up is that regular maintenance can only ever be planned on a rotation basis - as the network is so huge it would be impossible to keep everywhere litter free all the time

As they have no employees on the ground at East Dulwich, for reactive tidying in between planned dates, they rely on passengers (or Southern employees) to report the problem

The national helpline number is 08457 11 41 41 - 7 days a week / 365 days a year

    • Anyone know what the V7 local is turning into? Saw some guys painting it a teal colour last night which made me think it’s probably turning into another Truepennys haha - hopefully something more interesting
    • I agree with Sue here, but it is reasonable to raise a concern - there have been incidents of mass poisoning (from restaurants and cafes, supermarkets and food sellers such as butchers and fishmongers) where early warning (or a lack of it) has had a significant impact. But where this concern has been reasonably raised, but then discovered to be likely misplaced, it is a good thing to obfuscate the retailer identity. Of course, by removing the specificity, this might get later readers to worry that other ice-cream outlets locally were being implicated! Bit of a lose-lose situation really!
    • Yes, even  just the thread title will stick in people's minds, with the specific cafe mentioned. And they will see it every time they look at the list of threads in this section of the forum. It might be a good idea to change it to remove the cafe name and say something like "a local cafe"?
    • Our son really doesn't interact with others much and very rarely gets out, but when he does, an ice cream at the cafe is a favourite treat (even when it's freezing outside). Like yours, it's a single-person data point - in our case, no illness. Bugs can come from anything/anyone - other people are far more likely to be the unwitting carriers, in my view. Having gone there for years and years, never had a concern re the ice cream. And generally do worry about linking an establishment with illness/standards, even as a question as, even subconsciously, the association may stick in people's minds (and if they stop the ice cream, we'll be devastated!).
