Oh the joys of working from home this week... I get to see all that is going on locally...

Question, why has Dulwich Van Hire started parking their vans on the streets in and around their offices. Over the past few days I have seen an increase of white vans sporting the DVH logo with 2 on Saturday morning in my road, 4 yeasterday and now 6 parked up in two seperate groups today.

Have they not got a depot to go to ? is there something we can do as residents to free up these premium parking spaces without resulting to a CPZ ? this is getting as annoying as the estate agents cars are for residents near LL!!!!

Suggestions please posted in the dirt on the side of your nearest white van ?

They appear at 8:00am and get driven back into their yard at 5:30pm, so for all intense purposes it looks like they are using residental streets as an extra storage area during the day !!

besides Snorky you have just failed to post your comment in the prescribed way (I have also written this on the side of the nearest van...)

We used to live in Upland Rd and our garden partially backed on to DVH. At one stage they were definitely considering selling some of their land to a housing developer. I remember we had a look at the plans to see how overlooked our garden would be as a result. Anyway, we later sold up (for unrelated reasons!) but could be faintly possible that this has something to do with the vans parking on the road more? I could be totally wrong though as it was at least 3 or 4 years ago that we lived there....

Hi,

During opening hours DVH do servicing of cars and vans for local customers. It might be that they need to park the vehicles on the street to maximise the earning potential. I agree, it is not right and having been at the address for quite a while you think that they would try to consider their neighbours.

Another culprit was the taxi firm at the bottom of Oakhurst Grove, in the winter the drivers would sit in the cars overnight with the engines running to keep warm. The office closed down, but you still get the taxis parking up and making inconsiderate noise.

Regards,

Libra Car.

I called them up last week, as I have young children and am getting annoyed about having to park a long way from the house. The rather rude owner said that they were having some work done (seems quite major as there are diggers in the yard) and this will stop definately by the end of this week. I commented that it would be a better idea if the vans were spread around the surrounding streets but he seems to have taken no notice at all. Obviously they do not want any future business from nearby residents.
There is planning permission to develop a small enclave of houses and flats at the back of 38 Barry road, which mayexplain the cement lorries and maybe partly the reason why the vans are on the streets, but it doesn't make it any easier for the residents I have to say.
They had to get some footings in before end of March so that their planning application is still valid, so they have parked their vans everywhere. The main work will start later in year when the will also knock down house at front to build flats. I know all this as I live next door!

    • Hello East Dulwich families 👋 I wanted to introduce myself to the community. I’m a professional family & wedding photographer with 14+ years of experience, and I split my time between the US and London throughout the year. I’ll be based in London for the coming weeks and would love to photograph more local families here in East Dulwich. My approach is very relaxed and natural — no stiff posing, no pressure — just real connection, movement, and the beautiful everyday moments that tell your family’s story. I work especially well with kids and parents who feel “awkward” in front of the camera (which honestly is most of us!). Sessions can take place at home, in the park, on your favourite street, or anywhere that feels meaningful to you. The goal is to create images that feel like your life — not a photoshoot. If anyone has been thinking about documenting this season with their children, I’d love to connect, answer questions, or simply share examples of my work. No pressure at all — just happy to be here and meet some neighbours. You can see my work here: https://bluesparkphotography.com/family/ (use the contact page on the site to send me a message if you're interested!).
    • I don't! But I've also taken to calling myself David, as it seems to shorten the odds of achieving something in life. It's not King Dave, Dave Lloyd George, Dave Hockney, Dave Bowie or Dave Hasselhoff is it? And I'm not sure Michelangelo would have had such success if he'd called his sculpture 'Dave'.
    • I think there is still a shoes/clothes recycling bank outside of North Dulwich station.
    • I'm not so sure the collection team are that bothered anymore.  Two houses either side of me are rented and the tenants just chuck their rubbish - mostly bagged - in the blue or green bins depending on which has space in, not based on what it is.  The blue bins are always emptied.
