East Dulwich Hotel

The thread on the EDT planning application for B&B facilities has prompted me to ask about the rather peculiar looking East Dulwich Hotel on Upland Road.

Does anyone know anything about it?

It doesn't appear to satisfy, from the outside at least, the basic tenets of an inviting hotel.

It's better than it used to be! Believe it or not, they've actually improved the exterior. It used to have a hand written sign in the window saying it was an hotel, and I swear that the only thing holding the net curtains together was the dirt...

Never been inside, thankfully, but my husband and I did book there once when we were having works done on the flat, were staying with my father down near Swindon for the weekend, and the builders informed us that we would not be able to move back in on Sunday night as planned - so we had to just find anywhere to stay, using internet resources. The chap who answered the phone did sound quite surprised to be getting a booking. We took one look at it, got back on our mobiles and found somewhere else, albeit a couple of miles away.

A B&B is one thing this area seriously lacks (we also stayed at what is now The Actress, but I don't think they do rooms any more).

No, The Actress doesn't, but The Victoria Inn does.

Think the Upland Road Hotel used to be a b&b for the homeless.

Exactly. Its a shelter more than a hotel. They normally get calls from social services!

I've been in it. Very rough. But the owner's accommodation is to the same standard. I wouldn't put a friend in there if I were you.

I always wonder how they can make enough money to justify not selling up. Decent spot they've got there.

Used as a hostel paid a lot of money by council for desperate people. Its got a Quad out the back could be lovely. Its not though!

There are a few airbnb's around though - my mum stayed at a lovely one on Telegraph Hill for ?30 a night. Haven't looked in ED though.

My parents stayed at a lovely B&B in Dulwich called the Lilac Door. They would definitely recommend!

I had a friend who was in the building trade and many years ago he was asked by the owner to look the premises over to judge how good decor etc was. He reported back that the rooms were very small and they were hoping to get double beds into single rooms, some rooms were going to have 2 sets of bunk beds. Felt the whole place was poor. Who knows it may have changed. The owner is/was a local businessman who owned and rented out several houses in ED. Owner is now old and demented and I believe family members may have taken over business.

This place is a noise ridden dump! I live close by and it seems to be full of rude drunks or asylum seekers. Myself and a few of the neighbours have had to bang on the door in very early hours of the morning due to noise.

How its still open, I haven't a clue.

i wouldnt complain too loudly about the site... could end up with a travelodge!

a few years back the 5 joined houses were on the market for ?1.5mill the lot - would be snapped up at that price now. Stays open because they satisfy council HMO regs and provide a service to the authorities looking for 'cheap' b&b , placements for asylum seekers and the like.

Have thought about booking my relatives in there on a few occasions and then decided against it as it just looks cr*p! Haven't ventured past the front door though so could (ahem) be pleasantly surprised.

Have used Victoria Inn (good but sometimes noisy), Actress (sadly not any more) Air BnB (disastrous as key left with us didn't work but that's just a sample of one) and Peckham Lodge (surprisingly good!)

Oh and Marmora Man's place - which was absolutely fab!

Would bite the arm off someone developing a decent BnB near here....let me know if anyone hears of one!
