Does anyone know what/why/how/where from & where to the steam train and carriages was about that choo-choo'd it's way along the Denmark Hill/Peckham Rye line that i saw from Warwick Gardens and Bellenden Road railway bridge on Saturday morning (12th April)? There were many of us stood transfixed and giggling with delight at the sight.

Perhaps you're right macroban. I'm no train spotter but I was curious to know more. The timetable is dated 12 April 08 and shows Denmark Hill at 10.08 am which seems to tie in with joealessi's observation.

What is interesting, is the number of active steam trains that are in regular service up and down the country, with some departing/arriving at Kings X and Victoria. I had no idea. Think I'll take my boys up to Didcot or perhaps a trip on the historic Blackberry Line.

Brilliant! Well done and thanks everyone.. I did manage to get a picture on my mobile but as is the want of most things technical/electronic, my mobile and computer are not speaking at the moment and my computer is refusing to accept any photos from my mobile (having done so in the past!) But i can confirm that on the side of the train is a great big golden arrow, the quality of the picture being not good enough to see the name, so i reckon it's a safe bet that it was the Golden Arrow (gold star for lozzyloz!)

Sadly, close, but no gold star...

The golden arrow was the name of the train (Engine and carriages) that ran 'twixt London and Dover to connect with the boat trains to Calais. The coaches were originally Pullman (Very Luxurious) stock. It is now run by VSOE, who specialise in luxury steam train, and some boat, tours Click here to choose desitnations and see the eye watering prices!!

I'm happy to say, as one interested in most mechanical things, there's lots of steam running over the network these days, which always makes for a good sight.

LOz, I'd second Marcoban, Didcot will not suit the casualy interested kid, but can recommend the bluebell, and also the Romny Hyte and Dymchurch railway, on which the trains are 1/8th scale, live steam and run down the coast from Hythe (Unsuprisingly!) Good day our that, esp in summer, as can have a doss on the beach too.

I dint think that (and self describing as a Marxist) would have helped much when Labour was changed under Starmer. There was a purge of people as far left as him that he was lucky to survive once in my opinion.   Stuff like this heavy endorsement of Momentum and Corbyn. It doesn't wash with a party that is in actual government.   https://labourlist.org/2020/04/forward-momentum-weve-launched-to-change-it-from-the-bottom-up/
    • I perceive the problem.simply as spending too much without first shoring up the economy.  If the government had reduced borrowing,  and as much as most hate the idea, reduced government deiartment spending (so called austerity) and not bowed to union pressures for pay rises, then encouraged businesses to grow, extra cash would have entered the coffers and at a later stage when the economy was in a stronger position rises in NI or taxes would have a lesser impact, but instead Reeves turned that on its head by increasing ni which has killed growth, increased prices and shimmied the economy.  What's worse is that the perceived 20 billion black hole has increased to 30 billion in a year. Is there a risk that after 5 years it could be as high as 70 billion ???
    • That petition is bananas.   If you want a youth centre there pay the landlord the same rent a Londis would and build it yourself or shut the f**k up to be honest. Wasting our MPs time with this trivial nonsense is appalling. If your kids are still out at 1am on a school night you've got bigger problems than vapes and booze and hot sausage rolls.
