Any ideas what's happening with the tarpaulin covered 'shop-fronts' nr Dulwich Library/The Plough?

There was a thread about this place a year ago; see here. At the time no-one seemed to know precisely. I've asked around some of the local traders and all of them seem to be in the dark over it. The building work seems to have come to a halt at the moment anyway.
Months ago I asked someone on site and he told me it would be 5 shops and 10 flats above. Not seen much work going on recently and wondered whether it had come to a standstill, maybe because of financial problems but I did hear some hammering in there last week so either it's still going ahead or they had an industrious intruder...?
Last week a guy knocked on my door and told me he and his colleagues were fitting flooring in the flats above those shops and was I interested in any because they reckoned they'd have a lot left over. Sounds dodgy?? Having just laid a new floor I politely declined...

Nice idea Macroban but if I had ?600k floating around in cash, trust me I would be in some exotic location sunning myself right now!

Re the wood flooring DEFINITELY sounds dodgy... that's always the line that they just 'happen' to have lots left over from some big job...

The rule is that when purchasing hard wood flooring one orders on average size room, 2 square metres more than you need to cover the area, to allow for cuts and wastage.

If you buy the correct amount and run short you will not usually match it up with your following purchase.

So it may not be that dodgy, but I suspect they would want cash, not a cheque;-)

last time I heard anything was that there were going to be individual units (not sure whether shop of office) to hire.

At one stage some of the units were supposed to be for the temporary use of Dulwich Library whilst they had their refit. But the building work on the shops and flats had taken so long that nothing ever came of it.

would be nice to see a cafe open. i work nearby and there's nowhere really close to go for a nice lunch. any place to give me a reason to not go to badger bakery and be called 'darlin' by someone 10yrs younger than me!

    • https://www.assistancedogs.org.uk/information-hub/assistance-dogs-emotional-support-dogs-and-therapy-dogs/   hello   i’d be interested to understand if anyone.has experience of Assistance Dogs especially for autistic children of different ages for emotional support and therapy   There was a prior thread on this topic on EDF 10 hrs ago but it had limited experiences and there was a (claimed) change in UK legislation in 2019. Whilst the industry appears unregulated/unlicensed, there are several providers (approx 15, perhaps more) who claim to have fully trained dogs or say that they can help families to train a puppy/young dog over the 18-24 months.  The latter obviously comes with a need for strong commitment to the challenge. Costs for a fully trained assistance dog are quoted at £13-15k albeit they claim £23k total cost to train the dog. On the one hand, this could potentially be a useful solution for some families if such a dog was truly trained as their websites claim and such a dog was accepted in public places and schools etc… On the other hand, I don’t think that I’ve ever seen an assistance dog of this type or in this context (only for a blind or partially sighted person) and hence a real risk of fraud or exploitation! The SEN challenge for families coupled with limited resources in schools or from local authorities or the NHS as well as the extremely challenging experience of many families with schools offering little or no support or making the situation worse leaves a big risk of lots of different types of fraud and or exploitation in this area.
    • Hi there  We live on Woodwarde Road backing on to Alleyns Top Field.  Our cat Gigi has gone missing — it’s been about 24 hours now. She is a cream Bengal. Could you please check sheds, garages, or anywhere she might have got stuck please? And if you could keep an eye out or share on any local groups/forums, we’d really appreciate it. Photo attached.   Thanks so much! My name is Jeff on 07956 910068.
    • Colin.    One for the old school.   Just saying.
