Electronic music recommendations required

OK, so today I was listening to Kraftwerk 'Tour De France Sountracks' and I realised how much I like electronic music.

I have several other Kraftwerk cd's, Leftfield, Manuel Gottsching, Terry Riley and so on. Hell, I'd stick Weather Report in there too. Probably other things that I can't remember now, but if I like those things can anyone recommend other stuff with intelligently written/recorded music - not just electronically made, actually with a bit of art and soul ;-) to it.

I can highly recommend the new album by the Fuck Buttons on the ATP label for electronica noise stuff, for the art and soul check out he wonderful Peter Molina on Damaged Goods records, especially the first lp recorded with Billy Childish. And the new breeders album is a corker too.

Nine Horses - Snow Born Sorrow .. is a wonderful album

You have the Kraftwerk live CD? good stuff there too

More challenging - Scott Walker's Tilt - loathed by many but one of my favourite albums

More accessible - Dave Gahan's solo albums are decent

But to pick just one - Buddah of Suburbia soundtrack by Bowie - not quite a soundtrack but one or two lovely acoustic numbers with 8 electronic/ambient pieces... worth seeking out

I like either laid back stuff or little more breakbeat like Daft Punk, Air, Boards of Canada, Fila Brazilla, DJ Cam, Groove Armada, Zero Seven...

OK. Thanks for some interesting suggestions. Now my next challenge is how to audition some of these babies - I am not going to blow all my wad on unheard music. I am difficult to please, y'know.

mlteenie - I shall endeavour to burn some of my suggestions for you. Although Mrs mlteenie would probably warn you not to hold your breath....

If you're an itunes type of person, 79p per track, one track from each of the recommended groups will probably amount to ?8. Then get the rest of the album on the ones you like. When you bring up the album, popularity is rated so maybe start there and branch out.

My electro collection is pretty slim, but I've got some early zero 7 and portishead which I still really like, will happily burn copies for you and bring to next forum drinks.

I liked 'Destiny' by Zero7 and have things ike Air and Royksopp (which I like) I also have been listening to LTJ Bukem but he is lacking the melodic aspects (not to mention a little dated-sounding). I look forward to the next drinks session - we can do the deal then ;-) Anyone want a copy of 'Cocksucker Blues'? (assuming I can burn one).

Scott Walkers's Tilt is fabulous (but is it electronic?). And his later The Drift I have yet to fully get to grips with.

I love a DJ outfit called Kitsune. They have a load of compilations that are all good. Go to Amazon to hear previews and see their releases. They go for the house/indie/nu rave/punk funk vibe. This is one of their choices:

Propaganda - now that's something I haven't heard for a while! Way ahead of their time, loved P Machinery back in the day.

Definitely go with Ulrich Schnauss, Boards of Canada ('the campfire headphase' is more approachable than some of their other stuff), first two Air albums (Premieres Symptomes + Moon safari). Would highly recommend 'Nathan Fake - drowning in a sea of love' and 'Sabres of Paradise - Sabresonic' which is a bit of a classic though it might still be deleted,

Also any Lemon Jelly or Orbital, William Orbit (Strange Cargo III) and Aphex twin Selected Ambient Works Vol.1 1985-1992 and although I wouldn't class it as electronic, 'Nightmares on wax' have some great laid back albums.

I'm listening to Fabric 32 mixed by Luke Slater and it is deliciously dark. Most of the DJ Kicks(K7!) compilation cds are in a world of their own when it comes to quality and diversity. If you want some avant garde weirdness check out Autechres ouvre. Orbital are always pretty reliable as are Underworld. Most of the stuff on Ninja Tunes is very good. If you want an absolute classic try The Aphex Twins Selected Ambient works Vol.1. Plus all the above reccomendations...and you're right, electronic music is the balls.;-)

I also agree with bon3yard - Selected Ambient Works by Aphex Twin is indeed an absolute classic.

In a similar vein, Burial's album Untrue is hauntingly infectious.

If you are feeling a little bit frivolous however, you could try Dan Deacon - Wham City on Spiderman of the Rings is a mini masterpiece.

Kraftwerk are without doubt an enormously influential and innovative band of the late 20th century....their music also happens to be crap....

They still sound so fresh. P Machinery was on a brilliant 80s ZTT sampler (still not issued on CD). You can now get the wonderful Propaganda album Secret Wish on CD. Every tune a gem.

And speaking of ZTT, try also the Art of Noise.

Ninja Tubes has many fab artists, and their label compilations are a good point of entry. Also check out Ninja artist DJ Food's Raiding the 20th Century, an hour long mash up masterpiece. It should be on his website and elsewhere, free download.
