We have the music room where people post there latest finds/rememberances but amongst all of the many postings, editorial and context is lost. Which then reminded me of the lost art of mix-tapes

How about people pull together 10 different youtube song clips and list them with any liner notes you fancy adding yourself. Why each song deserves a place in your 10 picks, what it meant at the time etc

No other rules - no limit on how many from same artist, or length of song - just pick 10

(I'm cheating slightly by not picking 10 as I'm at work but will come back and do this later)

Ok, here we go for the first time. I've gone for country duets. An unusual choice but there are some great tunes in here (honest).

Johnny Cash and June Carter - Jackson

Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris - Return of the grevious angel

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Stick with me baby

Roy Orbison & kd lang - Crying

Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn - You're the reason our kids are ugly

Some are romantic, some sad and the last track is very funny, but I love all of 'em.

Cant get on to you tube here (my firewall blocks it) but am looking forward to seeing the lists that come in! :))

@DC - Islands in the stream - total Classic! I was raised on Kenny Rogers and Simon and Garfunkle - know almost all the words to the Gambler! *rolls eyes* I personally would have thrown in a bit of Rick Astley, possibly even Bros (both of which were massive in Australia when I was a kid)

Random songs belong in the music thread ladeeez n' gentleman (and a fine place it is too ) but this here place is for compilations (and praise/criticism thereof) only

Congratulations are in order to Mr Carnell ( I so wish his first name was Darnell) for standing up and being not only the first, but a very nicely chosen set.

lozzylozz - a good soulboy/girl set! I'd add

Cyanide - Brother on the Slide

Bootsey Collins - I'd rather be with you

Roy Ayers - Running away

Lonnie Liston Smith- Expansions

Willi Bobo - Always There

Jean Carn - Was that all it was

Azymuth - Jazz Carnival

Brothers Johnson - Starwberry Letter 13(?)

Funkadelic - Freak of the Week

Commodores - Sanctified

David Sylvian - September

A tiny, tiny song. A little thing... barely a minute. But it makes me happy to be alive

Holly Palmer

This is just beautiful. I first heard it when she played support to some

shower at the 100 club on Oxford St - It was just her, an acoustic guitar

and lot's of over-loud media types at the bar. their loss. This version is

more lush obviously

Tindersticks

Picking a sticks song is hard. So I went with one of Lady MacGabhann's

favourites

Lambchop - Up With People

You will clap along.... yes, you will

Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEwQbptSnAk

I'm convinced she's not of this earth. But this is lovely

David Bowie - Thursday's Child

I love this video.. both the song and the video a melancholy-tinged-with-hope effort about ageing

Flaming Lips - Do You Realise?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvdma6tCnjw

Makes me giddy....

Massive Attack - Safe From Harm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ1cACrPHdc

This reminds me of Queens Sq in Bristol and one of the best gigs I ever saw

Saul Williams - Black Stacey

Seriously interesting character. Saw him supporting NiN and bought his

album straight afterwards. He does more poetry readings than live concerts

but if you get a chance to see him... here he sings it without music

Scott Walker - If You Go Away

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGAWtQsUymk

Ne Me Quittez Pas indeed. This reminds me of a gig at the jazz cafe where

this was playing loudly as tranvestites handed out free cigarettes and

everyone prepared to Shag Tobacco

  • 1 month later...

It?s been a wet weekend; I?m in my nightgown way before bedtime and I?m makin? free with the Grey Goose. Here are some sad songs. Cry with my compliments. This being said, I would choose 10 completely different songs tomorrow night; the beauty of the mixed tape.

Strange first choice because I always hated this 80s stadium-rouser until I stumbled upon this acoustic version which strips the song down to nothing; just a sad story about a guy who gets shafted by his country. Listen without prejudice.

Bruce Springsteen ? Born in the USA

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc0ucoesINs

Pixies ? Cactus

This is a song about a guy in prison asking his lady to send him her dirty dress so he can get through the dark times.

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor

Just wishing that I had just something you wore

I put it on when I go lonely

Will you take off your dress and send it to me?

Now I may be the only one ever to find this horny but just imagine being loved / loving someone that much? Hmmm, horny. It?s a Pixies song but here?s the David Bowie cover:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XDQqq0ehwlc

Sod it, here?s the Pixies too ?cos I just found this on Youtube with Frank and the guys gone all acoustic and I can always make a little extra room for the Pixies

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex272jpUOSg

Pogues ? Lullaby of London

Difficult to choose just one Pogues song but this one haunts and I think Shane may actually be sober on this take.

NIN/Johnny Cash - Hurt

If you don?t cry you?re STONE

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AO9dbmJ_2zU

Nirvana ? All Apologies

I would walk on hot coals for the full length of Lordship Lane to have the chance to see these guys. Never gonna happen. Sucks.

I love a good Dylan song, just so long as he?s not the one singin? it (miserable bugger). I really wanted to include Barb Jungr singing It?s All Over Now Baby Blue but I?m technically challenged and I didn?t know how. If anyone can help ? please upload for me. Otherwise, here?s another. Stay with her ?till the end ? she?s worth it.

Bob Dylan ? Like A Rolling Stone

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=A54x6NpKwDY

Toni Childs ?

I wanted to upload Stop Your Fussin (which always lifts a cloud) but, again, I didn?t know how, so here?s another. Where is this lady these days?

Antony and the Johnsons, what?s not to like?

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6M7qQedSdKk

Dolly gone punk

White Stripes ? Jolene

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=j3cG-kQcED0

Led Zeppelin ? Dazed and Confused

From O2 reunion last year. Can?t remember being this excited since Father Christmas brought me Malibu Barbie circa 1973.

Just watched it. Now I'm weeping. Thanks.

    • Surprise, surprise. It didn't take them long, did it. This will be something of a test as to how much the council really care about parks and the environment. A footfall of 60,000. Are they mad? There is no way this park is designed for or can sustain that sort of use. Just had a look at the schedule. If allowed to go ahead, this will involve a large slice of the park (not the common) sectioned off and out of use for three weeks of May and the first week of June. Here's an idea, why not trial the festival in one of the other Southwark Parks, so the 'goodness' can be shared around the borough?
    • There was another unprovoked attack on Monday this week on a young woman nearby (Anstey Road) at 6.45pm. Don't have any other details, it was posted on a Facebook group by her flatmate. Pretty worrying  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EGfDrCAST/
    • OMFG is it possible for the council to do anything without a bunch of armchair experts moaning about it? The library refurb is great news, as it's lovely but completely shagged out - the toilets don't even work reliably. Other libraries in the area will be open longer house during the closure. July is a rubbish time to begin a refurb because it's just before the entire construction sector goes on summer holiday, and it would mean delaying the work another 8 months.
