Louisa
Welcome to ED the promised land for the middle classes, oops I mean Brixton, which is about to become home to a 'little Waitrose' convenience store. Here's proof - http://www.brixtonblog.com/waitrose-convenience-supermarket-coming-to-brixton/16054More evidence ED's reputation is further slipping down the gentrification scale. Be afraid folks, I reckon at this rate Peckham will get one before we do. Haha such fun. Louisa. StraferJack
Geez why would people be afraid. Brixton has long been more expensive hasn't it? Louisa
Oh John, come on, I know how smug some people are about how superior they feel this area is to the surrounding ones. The length and breadth of conversation regarding the 'will they wont they' come to ED has been going back years now. I'm personally more than happy to see Morrisons come to the area, that'll do me just fine. But there will be some painful snobbery at the thought of yet another South London postcode getting a Waitrose before we do. It is amusing to be a spectator. Louisa. Voyageur
I love shopping in Waitrose - does that make me a painful snob? StraferJack
No Louisa, you imagine, and inflate what some people think. Applespider
The Brixton brewery linked to further on the page is more interesting ;pI did notice a 'new' Sainsburys Local in Brixton the other night - there are now two within 100m of each other on the same side of the road which seems bizarre. And John, how is nearly 7 years worth of constant banging on about Waitrose coming to the area my imagination or an inflation of the truth? Read the thread and post history on the forum if you don't believe me. I didn't see the same amount of interest verging on hysteria on the Brixton or Clapham dedicated forums and guess what, who's getting the Waitrose first? Louisa. StraferJack
Ed is waaaay smaller than either of those areas. So interest will be keenI'd also be interested to know membership and posting rates on those forumsLastly, more of those thread were people dismissing the need for shops like that. But sure, in any small area a big name store will elicit a lot of interest in a section of that community. This area is no different no matter how much you try and gussy it up Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/36705-brixton-little-waitrose/#findComment-681635 Share on other sites
Annette Curtain
So, if we sit quietly like good children, Waitrose will come to our area ? Girl82
What?! Brixton gets Waitrose and we get Morrisons?! Not cool. Seriously though, I do think people are misguided about Waitrose prices. Last time I checked their beef mince was ?2.86, while Co-op's was ?4 for the same weight! If you shop carefully at Waitrose, it's very price competitive, plus it's excellent quality. I like knowing that all the meat and dairy that I'm buying is free range, for example. DulwichFox
If you live in E.D. and like Waitrose.. You can go to Brixton (when it arrives there) Or, if you are feeling VERY adventurous, you can go to Beckenham (where you can park and do a full shop) Ask your mum if that would be ok. Or if you are all Grown-up, then try it all by yourself. Lowlander
You can get Ocado and Waitrose to deliver. Why would you want to actually go into a supermarket? For anything fresh like bread and olives I can simply pop into Franklins or the ED deli, both very reasonable priced compared to Sainsburys or Tesco I believe. HonaloochieB
Anything that'll bring more 'footfall' (I believe that's the term) to the good people at Bookmonger is AOK with me.Well done to the good people at th Waitrose organisation. HonaloochieB
Oh ARSE! There'll be more people able to see the Bookmonger's stock before I do. And they might put their prices UP UP UP because all the posho bastards from ED will flock there.Just because it's Waitrose.BLAST THEM!! Jeremy
The point of these small format stores is that they're local, convenient, and open long hours. If you have the luxury of popping in to the ED Deli/W Rose/etc on any given day that's great, but it's not representative of the typical working adult. MrBen
What Jeremy said. If more local shops were open 11am-7pm on weekdays they'd get regular weekday evening trade from me. I can't see that happening. So it's Saturdays only for me (sadly). MrBen
They're rolling out 10 Little Waitroses in inner London this year. And also soon at Shell Petrol stations. Similar to M&S Simply Food, Tesco Metro and Sainsburys Local they only need 2500 sq ftin this format which means a lot of potential sites on average high streets.Their one genius commercial move has been to convert the old book/cd shop on the north end of London Bridge into a LW store on one of the highest daily footfalls in the world. You can almost see the money printing itself.... Annette Curtain
We won't be seeing the W store in ED anytime soon, as ED has all the elements that an W store offers. Fish, meat, bread, sundries are all covered. Why would W look at a site when the competition would be coming at it from all sides. Brixton , Beckenham both lack the quality we have in ED, so it's a no brainer for W to be there Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/36705-brixton-little-waitrose/#findComment-682019 Share on other sites

ed_pete
Kind of an aside, I understand that Tesco have been given permission to open a new Tesco Metro on the Student Accodomation site being built where the petrol station used to be between Milkwood Road and the bottom end of Herne Hill. Given that the Sainsburys Local is virtually already next door, I'm not sure how they'll both survive and it's sure going to be tough for the remainder of the independent shops in HH, even more so those at the Half Moon Lane end that are still suffering the consequences of the burst water main in August.
