Toast ED - review for Sunday lunch??

Hi all,

My parents are travelling to East Dulwich for lunch tomorrow. We want to go somewhere close to Lordship Lane and after a truly great gastronomic experience at Toast ED a few weeks ago, I was thinking of heading there. However, I have no idea what their Sunday lunch offering is like. Has anyone been?? Would really appreciate some honest feedback before I book.

Although I haven't tried it yet, I know Franklins in the safe fall back choice for a Sunday lunch but my father is very passionate about food so if anybody has an unusual suggestion for somewhere which really impressed them, would love to hear from you.

Thanks.

We've been up to the newish Crystal Palace Food Market restaurant on Church road in CP a few times now, and it's really good. They have a Josper charcoal oven, and do amazingly good meat and fish in it. Not madly expensive either, starters, mains, beers, wine and coffee for two for about ?50.

Yes - their pork belly is addictive, as is that wonderful drink they make with beetroot juice and (I think)pomegranate.

According to Mr Louisa they are allegedly similar to Aunt Bessie's ready roasties, whether that is true isn't for me to say, but they are indeed very tasty and very salty. The glass always sticks to the table Vik, and for me, that's the icing on the cake. If you're feeling adventurous you can even order a starter or a side, I always enjoy the garlic bread with cheese.

Louisa.

My post was in response to Binnie's (immediately above it) saying that the pork belly at Duck Egg may have swayed it.

Duck Egg have had generally poor reviews on here in the past for their food, while ToastEd have had generally good reviews. The recommendation for Duck Egg's Sunday roast was (obviously) not a review of ToastEd's Sunday lunch.

The OP was asking for "unusual suggestions" for a person passionate about food.

Sorry I didn't explain my post more clearly .....

I hope that wherever they went they had an enjoyable meal! I hope the lack of a feedback post is just because it was so good that they still can't move .... :)

I recently found Toast ED and have now expeienced the Avocado on toast for breakfast and a wonderful Lamb and Remoulade for lunch.

Not the cheapest but quality fair, great service and a lovely setting. Have told all my friends. Highly recommended.

  • 2 weeks later...

Took my parents out for a roast at the Duck Egg today and the everyone agreed the food was amazing!

Also v good value; think it was ?12.95 for the roast beef - an unusually decent portion and they got my 'medium rare' just right. BYOB saved us a few quid too.

Very satisfying meal and will be back for sure!

Haven't been to ToastED so can't compare.. yet.

    • If someone comes to my house and bangs my door and slams my gate, I'd speak to them about it nicely and ask if they would please not do that. And then subsequently less nicely if they keep doing it, ending in reporting them.  We don't slam doors at home and I don't put up with that either. I can see us moving to a culture where we bribe drivers to be nice by tipping them, but we shouldn't have to. It's not necessary - does not matter if they are on minimum wage or not, or if society means that delivery services are outsourced or whatever reason anyone would like to concoct.

    • I never said I thought it was targeted or deliberate. There also has never been a “stand off” or confrontation, we’ve spoken to them in a friendly manner about it. Our experience is they don’t seem to care. That’s the frustrating thing for us, if someone politely raises a concern at least take a second to reflect. Treat others how you would want to be treated.  I don’t want them to lose their job, far from it. But considering it could cost me a days work to fix any damage, I’m within my right to try prevent it.
