As per my previous post and possibly supported by ianr's report of the Radio 4 broadcast, I don't know if it is such a simple case of deduction.

If there has been a massive cloning operation in an outlet in East Dulwich in the past few months and it is only now that the stolen details are being used then it is highly likely that the fraud alert would seemingly occur after a trip to Somerfield, particularly if you shop there every day/few days using a card.

I may be very wrong and it still does not get away from the fact that there is highy likely to have been some cloning activity at some point in East Dulwich.

For the record I have been using the HSBC machines regularly ( at least one twice a week) and have used my card in Somerfield on occasion. Luckily, I have not had any problems so far.

I will of course report back if I have now jinxed myself!

Hi

I also got a call today from Natwest Fraud Department. There had been a ?1 transaction at a Pizza Hut made which they flagged up as odd. They have cancelled my card for me now and are sending me a new one. So watch out for small transactions too that you don't recognise as these can be people testing the cards before spending more of your hard earned cash! Well done to natwest though - was pretty impressed at their speedy response.

Yeah so you would think. I guess that is why the bank called me. They may have paid for a meal with cash then not had the extra ? or something. What a joke these people are. Makes my blood boil when we are all working hard for a living.

Another card cloning! Contacted by HSBC today as my card has been cloned and is being used, along with pin, in India. Have also used card previously in Somerfield, LL but not for a few weeks. Card has been used more recently in Sainsburys, Forest Hill.

Yeh you'd think if they were going to use your card at all, they'd pay for the whole meal with it, would have been a bit less suspicious :))

I have used both the bank machine at HSBC on Lordship lane, and Somerfield recently, and someone took 150 quid of my money out in India last friday. The same happened to my housemate the day before, although they didn't manage to get any money off her.

When I took money out at the counter in HSBC, everybody in the queue seemed pretty convinced it was Somerfield where it was happening.

Massive pain in the arse, still waiting for my new card and my money back!

Having been following the above I was wondering when we would be done and my husband got a call from Lloyds this morning and the Canadians are at it again. Only place we've used the joint card recently is Somerfield although I agree with Wino that if the operation is sophisticated enough it doesn't necessarily mean that that is where the card was cloned.

Just got of the 'phone to Lloyds and it took all of 2 minutes to get the ball rolling for the funds to be put back and

a new card issued, very impressed!

Turns out both transactions were also made in Canada, and not long after shopping in Somerfield. In my opinion some of the new staff appear to be suspicious and wouldn't be surprised if some of them were connected to the cloning happening in the store. Sadly the tech behind cloning is so easy to get hold of these days, it's crazy. Mentioned Somerfield to Lloyds and I'm not the first this week to report a problem with them either..

"edited because in retrospect it was a viewpoint based on a assumption, so I've changed it".

Or even the first today (see my earlier post) and it's not even 10am yet!

I dont shop there often at all! I think that in the 4 months I have lived in ED I have prob been a maximum of 3 times. Also spoke to my housemate about this last night who says that there is a Somerfield opposite his work, in Croydon, and lots of people at his work have suffered fraud at the hands of Somerfield too. It could be a coincidence I suppose, but I think this is unlikely.

I would be surprised if it is only one outlet that is affected. I was told by Lloyds Fraud Investigation service, that the cloners tend to move into an area with a reasonable concentration of supermarkets, corner stores, off-licences and petrol stations and then target several of those types of business for a short period to maximise returns, before moving onto the next area. They also tend to move themselves/equipment out of an area before selling on any of the details according to Lloyds, so it's unlikely to be anyone working in a shop now. This is all part of my ongoing discussions with Lloyds over their refusal to report the cloning of my card to the police. Their approach is basically there isn't any point because the damage has been done and there's no sensible and cost-effective way to investigate given the nature of the crime.

Me too. Used my debit card in Somerfield on Friday am and two withdrawals in India Friday pm and Saturday. When I contacted Abbey they had flagged them as suspicious but not bothered to bring it to my attention. Only noticed when checking my account online today.

Talking to a work colleague yesterday evening and he was stating that there have been a large number of dodgy withdrawal for the people of West Norwood. Apparently it was in one of the local freebe papers last week. Is there a Sommerfield in

West Norwood?. Must have a look at the West Dulwich Forum website to see if they have recorded any problems.

I've been hit by the Canadian lot as well. ?1k over the weekend when I was at weddings and hadn't noticed until I tried to get cash on Sunday. Barclays apparently stopped 14 transactions, but only after 7 went through! They also sent me out a letter in the post that still hasn't arrived. Why - when they have my mobile number - do they not just call dammit? Seems like Barclays are one of the slowest banks for spotting fraudulent activity, stopping your card and informing you. Lets see how speedy they are in reimbursing it too!

Hi - could you please include this statement on your community website in response to recent concerns regarding our East Dulwich store.

Somerfield statement: Our security teams are currently investigating these reports and liaising with the banks to establish whether there is a connection with our store in Lordship Lane. At this stage the banks have not confirmed a link and we our satisfied that our systems have been thoroughly checked and store security procedures have been followed correctly.

Somerfield maintains its vigilance to this type of crime and continues to liase closely with the banks and the specialist police unit which deals with this type of fraud to ensure that our customers are protected at all times.

Anyone who thinks they are affected by card fraud should immediately alert their bank. In the unlikely event a cardholder is an innocent victim of this or any type of fraud, they have excellent protection under The Banking Code, which means that they will not suffer any financial loss.

Many thanks

Kind Regards

Julie

Was contacted by my bank this morning and what do you know someone tried to withdraw cash in canada. This is the third time in a year one of my cards has been closed and my partner had her card cloned last week, the only common shop we have used is somerfield or the cashpoint at HSBC. If not there I work in streatham and use the somerfield there !!!.

And to BARA, I've read on the virtual norwood forum, that the somerfield in West Norwood seems to be a shop people have used and been cloned!!!

Almost paranoid about using any shop or cashpoint.

I got a call from Lloyds TSB today because someone had tried (unsuccessfully) to withdraw ?250 in Canada. I've used my card in Somerfield recently and, more unusually, at the HSBC on L Lane, which I hardly ever use. I hope everyone who's been affected gets their money back.

"I notice some of the new (Somerfield) staff do look very dodgy indeed and wouldn't be surprised if they aren't behind this happening."

Shu.Kurimu.Sensei, so you have come to the conclusion that some of the new staff at Somerfield 'look dodgy' and may therefore be behind card cloning? What an impertinent thing for you to say. I know you dislike impertinence when it is directed at you or your wife.

My neighbour's daughter has just started work at Somerfield prior to starting University, I wonder if she is one of the 'dodgy' looking people you had in mind?

I got cloned and pin taken at the HSBC cashpoint about 3 weeks ago (or roughly whenever this thread started). Definitely 100% that cashpoint as it was a semi-dormant account that I decided to withdraw the final cash from and hadn't used the card anywhere else for many weeks. Took about two days for the foreign withdrawals to start.

Then other half had the same done end of last week - strongly suspect either Lloyds cashpoint (by Plough) or Sainsbury's cashpoint. Definitely not Somerfield. I suspect electronic intervention (wireless or otherwise) as we are both v v careful with concealing pin.
