I was a northerner by'eck and I'll 'ave you know 'appen that a goodish lump of East Dulwich was born bred and built by a northerner, hence all those northern names melbourne chesterfield ashbourne groves 'is name was Bailey thou knows.

This ancient knowledge is extremely reliable as it comes from the back end of se22 a magazine of some quality.

I have just got back from t'north (Warrington, York, Sunderland and Luton).

You can see why people might want to move south, its grim up there, all rain and big knickers.

The only positive element seems to be a the number of available allotments, of course this may be because of the number of empty houses.

You only get a half a pint of beer, the rest is froth, which they seem to worship, that and pickled eggs and dripping sandwiches. Its a varied diet, just as long as its hot and shiny.

Let them come south and guest-workers to replace the Poles, who are all going home as they dscover what we all knew ....

I like the North and northerners too really, I also like the south. Much as it can be fun, I gave when people get serious about the north south thing. There are a lot of northerners who think that we've all had it great down south whilst they've been shat on, and a lot of southerners who probably think they're a bit superior. At the end of the day It's all a load of shite, and both north and south should just get along and be happy that they're not from the midlands or wales!

I am from the West Midlands where you can get Banks' Mild Ale, hot pork sandwiches, scratchings, chewy air, proper balties and scabies and Shakespeare. Makes me proud.

The East Midlands is a bit of a dump mind.

The bit of the countr to the North of the West Midands is so bad that THOUSANDS of people block the M6 to get away from it every day. Makes you think.

They do, it was called Yate's wine lodge, but I don't know if they still exist.

It was the only place that sold wine by the shipload,

which was a large glass called a schooner that could render you legless after only two or three.

They also had boarded floors with sawdust to kick around whilst you staggered up or down the very long bar.

Definitely recommend pies and prejudice by Stuart Maconie on the beauty of the north. Why is it that the news channels need to have North of England correspondents, but no South of England correspondents?

I'm a northerner (nr Bury and Bolton) enjoying ED for 2 years now and London for 9.

Biggest difference? I remember my first trip down Oxford Street shopping and throughout the day whenever I held the door of a shop open to let someone else through, there was no "thanks love" or "cheers mate", they just walked through without uttering thanks or offering a cheeky wink. On a positive note, the other big difference is that Londoners have perfected the art of escalator travel; very few citys up north would or have split an escalator into a slow and fast lane.

Of course I could mention the difference what you get for your money in terms of property, but that would also depress me!

Another good piece:

sticking up for the north

Ah, you are forgetting that here in the South, a Northerner opening a door for one is probably a servant and one should not be too intimate with the staff lest they forget themselves and become over familiar and expect an extra blanket.

    • I’d also recommend Paul for electrical work. He came round the other week to help us out with a handful of jobs (installing an SPD, new light fittings, installing a dimmer switch, a bathroom fan). His quote was cheaper than what I got from others, he turned up on time and he got the job done quickly.
    • We’d like to add our recommendation for Lukasz and team at L&L Building & Maintenance.  Lukasz has recently installed a roof terrace for us, and we’ve found him a pleasure to work with from start to finish. We contacted about a dozen recommended builders and found his quote very competitive. During the build his team delivered quality work, they were no hassle in the house at all and they kept the place tidy every day. The terrace looks great, and we’re very happy customers. What stood out in particular was Lukasz’s responsiveness, right from discussing quotes to follow-up during the build. Lukasz often checked in and was always available when we needed him.  We’ll definitely contact Lukasz again for future building work and we’d happily recommend him to others looking for a reliable builder.   Lukasz Kugaczewski L&L Building & Maintenance 07926651960 [email protected] www.landl-build.com
    • Yes, I did mention the train, which I now get from East Dulwich to Guys instead of the 40. Depends where in East Dulwich you are starting from which route is easiest! I think it is probably lack of staff rather than lack of hospitals which is the problem?
    • What can be done? How about reporting it to the police?
