Harvester

I was told by a neighbour (who gets quite involved in planning stuff in our area, so is reasonably well informed) that both Tesco and McDonalds had expressed interest in the site for a Metro and a drive-through respectively, but that these were "unlikely to happen".

I guess I'm not surprised by that if what Lousia says is right and the Dulwich Estate is the owner (which I hadn't heard before). Shame it can't go back to the Grove or a Harvester or similar as it is right on our doorstep.

That would be good. Maybe not too posh though, eh. I remember when it was an excellent pub and they had a very good restaurant out the back and quite a posh bar as well. So much so that you had to wear a tie in there. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor used to eat in there in the 60s. It has a huge space for the garden where there is another bar and excellent parking facilities. I'd quite like to see it run on similar lines to The Great Exhibition. Makes perfect sense to me. And I only live around the corner so would be very good to have somewhere nearby to for a few ales and maybe a bit of nosh.

I agree Jah. Something like Harts Boatyard in Kingston/Surbiton? A traditional theme with a modern twist, harking back to the days of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. The Grove Tavern really was a great pub in its day before the Harvester chain took it on. It always reminded me in summer of being out in the countryside, and yet still inner London. It's something Dulwich does so well thanks in part to the Dulwich Estate being able to control development which keeps a semi-rural feel. It would be a shame to lose that- we need to treasure places like this and bring them back to their former glory. This was originally a coaching inn going to London from rural Surrey.
