People always say... It's cheap / a bargain for round here...

Well what is around here..?

House prices , Food prices, Drink prices have been artificially inflated because

people 'around here' think that East Dulwich with it's Victorian Terraces is somewhere special.

It isn't .

Trouble is, other areas are adopting a similar attitude in the 'Snob Race'

"Oh we went to 'That New Place' It was very expensive, but was really nice."

"And we got a free coffee"

It's all getting out of hand.

DulwichFox

Hear hear Foxy.

Everything is relative. However, it appears that East Dulwich has been affected by hyper snobbery to the extent that people refer to 'bargain for around here' without actually knowing what it means. Does this phrase also include the Dulwich Cafe or Kebab and Wine when these people make these judgements? I'd be interested to know.

Louisa.

Sigh. Alright then. Let's make it easier

Go anywhere. ANY. WHERE

Harvester in Leeds or kebab and wine in dulwich

Sit down. Have some food. And some drinks

Check the bill

It's close to twenty quid, at best, isn't it?

But comparing like for like wouldn't be so effective would it?

*Pizza Express pizzas cost between ?7.80 and ?13.40 (yes, ?13.40) (menu).

You can only get their BOGOF offer on one day a week and it's only for customers of a particular mobile phone network.

*Franco Manca pizzas cost between ?4.90 and ?6.95, seven days a week - whatever network you're on. (And they taste much better...)

You seem to be very selective in your reading.

I have not trashed this venue:

Just to put the record straight...

I think the Franco Manca prices seem reasonable.

Friends who have used the Brixton branch speak highly of the place and I trust their judgement.

I simple do not much like cheese or tomatoes except when cooked in sauces such as curry.

I simply do not like Pizza.

I'm sure they will do well and wish them all the very best especially after they have

done so much work to the place to overcome the previous problems with the design of the building.

Please take a little more time to read all posts before you make judgement

based on any previous anti Foxy sentiments.

The Raven

The raven on the roof closed one eye

Preened himself against the sky

Picked his beak with a crooked claw

And settled down to wait once more

In the house beneath the family sat

Tossing goldfish to the cat

TV dinners on their knee

And forty-nine lights on the Xmas tree

Father?s made a lot of bread

"Someone?s got to make guns" father said

"We know it?s all right and there?s the proof"

"Our house has got a raven on the roof"

"The next door neighbours, there are a joke"

"They cultivate a garden which they smoke"

"And send their kids to the local schools"

"They must be growing up a bunch of fools"

"The next door neighbours haven?t a cent"

"We own our house but they pay rent"

"Property owners should remain aloof"

"Especially when they?ve got a raven on their roof"

When father was fifty he fell ill

Mother puts the crumbs on the window-sill

Like she usually did, but he died in pain

And they found he had a raven in his brain

Foxy I think I'm not entirely inaccurate given your prediliction for trashing new eating venues based on cost, quality and what's actually on offer (and how easily it could all be made at home). I'm not just looking at one thread, that would be unrepresentative !

Mine goes up to 11.

On the 'inexpensive for "around here" argument it's nice to see a business (FM) open that doesn't put its prices up (compared to other venues) just because it is on LL.

Off topic(-ish, but as this thread says Draft House not really) but as an illustration, the bread at Boulangerie Jade on LL is more expensive than the same loaf from BJ on Barry Rd.

Queuing is the thing I hate most about eating in London now. So many places where you can get really great food for a very reasonable price. But there's no way I'm going to fritter away what little free time I have by standing in a bloody queue for an hour to eat pizza/burger/ribs/ramen, or even lobster.

    • By now you’ve hopefully seen that our main demonstration against Trump’s state visit is in London on Wednesday. Many of you have also asked, though, about how you can help ‘welcome’ Donald Trump to Windsor when he arrives there tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. So here’s the plan: We’re asking you to come and line Windsor High Street tomorrow in a peaceful, static protest.  Time: 6pm, Tue 16 Sept Location: Assemble outside Windsor Parish Church, High St, Windsor SL4 1LS and then spread out along the High Street. Grab some cardboard and a pen and make a homemade sign to show Donald Trump and his supporters what you think of them!  The world’s media will be in Windsor to cover the state visit, so showing visually that he is not welcome will send an important message far and wide. If you are coming then please join this Signal chat group for important updates.     Protest safety Please buddy up and come with someone else You have a right to peacefully demonstrate, but we are expecting a high police presence. Remain non-violent and non-confrontational, and do not talk to the police. It may be better to dress inconspicuously, not like an ‘activist’ We plan on ending at 7.30pm. Please leave in groups of 5–10 and make sure you have a bust card This action is entirely legal but we still recommend that you read this key advice when going on a protest to know your rights. Remember:  No comment No personal details Ask ‘under what power?’ No duty solicitor Don’t accept a caution Here is the protest support line: 07946 541 511 and here is more information on Stop & Search under the Public Order Act.   Thank you for being part of the movement against Trump. In solidarity, Stop Trump Coalition
    • We booked a day when we could drop around 8 bags. They directed us to use the rear entrance on Carver Rd. I would definitely ring as they don’t seem to have much space at the back. Our experience was great, they were very polite and thankful.
