Anyone else loathe the word 'boob' when applied to a female breast? I'm not going to explain why, because I'm not sure I know absolutely. And I don't want to make a tit of myself.

I put it in the same box as 'hubby' 'tummy' 'tot' and 'romp'. All words that make me shudder. And should be put in a box and towed out to sea.

I agree, there are so many other great monikers, such as "norks" and "bristols", that using boobs just seems like a wasted opportunity. As an aside, has there ever been a worse word than gusset?

Groin. I don't like groin. Yuk. Horrible word. Also, moist (and don't even think about putting the two together because that's just double yuk). I agree about gusset though.

Surely not as sizeist as 40D.

Giggirl I toned it down deliberately in consideration of the not so well endowed female form, and it seemed about the size of the perfect 10 which all the ladies seem to hanker after, (according to the media).

Using the boob word is very apt in this case, as according to my dictionary it means:- blunder/error/lapse/miscue.

I should never have stuck my neck out and been so accomodating in starting this thread, I only obliged because of the ladies complaints on the 40D thread not being about breasts.

I knew no good would come of it.

They are only of value when they are lactating, other than that they are for the poseur, and the voyeur!

You can all sod off, and take your norks and bristols with you.

Creeps off chuntering about wasting time on favours for undeserving norkish gits........................

Why do you get DD and not AA, BB and CC?

Because D used to be the biggest size you could get. Over the last 25 years boobs (I think that's an ok word) have got a lot bigger. Nobody knowns why exactly, it thought to be possibly linked to the general trend towards obesity or changes in diet to include more natural (eg from soya) and artificial (though meat) oestrogens or increased use of the oral contraceptive pill. Anyway, when bra manufacturers realised they needed to make a size bigger that D they called it DD, but pretty soon that wasn't big enough either so they went on up the alphabet. Another theory is that boobs aren't actually getting that much bigger, but that womens' expectations are higher and they are no longer prepared to settle for a poorly fitting bra. The traditional sizing system works on two measurements, below the bust and around, but this doesn't take indivdual shape into account at all. Many women, some surveys suggest most, are wearing bras that are too big around the back and too small in the cup. As women learn more about their bodies, the demand for a greater range of sizes increases.

Oh and Keef is correct, there is a AA and it's smaller that A.

Well, you did ask.

It would make great documentary footage.

And here we see the growth of the female breast through the ages. No one is sure why their jiggling effect is so hypnotic on the male human but this ancient fertility ritule is thought to date back to the beginning of time itself.

    • Agree! I feel very lucky to live in a borough that has such great libraries.
    • Also has a free film afternoon once a month… shows a range of films.. Free as well. On first floor. Not great toilets but still.. Staff are all very helpful. Have lessons one to one if you need help on most computer issues. Can borrow iPad as well on site - ground floor. Extremely well stocked library with some new titles as well.
    • Just a short silly one among more prosaic or gloomy posts: libraries are brilliant and we are lucky to have them! I popped into Dulwich Library this afternoon. It was pretty busy and I'd guess there were probably 40-50 people in, plus however many in the kids' section. All sorts of people were borrowing books, getting their blood pressure checked on the machine, printing documents, using computers, getting out the house and off the street, reading the papers and reference books, whatever. Oldies, kids, students and everyone in between. At exam time, it's a safe space rammed with kids studying. It's an elegant building, the staff always seem to be doing their best despite the obvious money challenges, it's open late most days, and all for £0 at point of use. We are all very lucky to have access to Dulwich Library and the other libraries! 👏👏👏
