Was it not just blue or was there a badge on it too? I wasn't paying attention. If there was it's a shame as however much you might like a particular result to happen, it's disrespectful to Costa Rica and not in line with how I view the BEEB as being fairminded.

I'm not feeling too gloomy about England. We tried some youth, and saw some promise. Plus without Messi Argentina would surely be joinging us at the airport, and Brazil aren't exactly storming it.

Shame to see France doing so well, but you can't have everything.

All in all it's a very enjoyable WC so far.

Hope England go out with some pride on Tuesday...

Yep badge was there on the front of the shirt.

Was kind of funny in 2006, by 2010 it was grating....2nd week of 2014?

Sorry if you've heard this before but I had to share this if you haven't.

Neymar goes into the Brazilian changing room to find all his team mates looking a bit glum.

"What's up?" he asks.

"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it's important but it's only England. They're sh*t and we can't be bothered".

Neymar looks at them and says "Well, I reckon I can beat them by myself, you lads go down the pub." (he says in Portuguese).

So Neymar goes out to play England by himself and the rest of the Brazilian team go off for a few beers. After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so get the landlord to put the TV on. A big cheer goes up as the screen shows

"Brazil 1 (Neymar 10 minutes) - England 0 "

He is beating England all by himself! Anyway, a few more beers later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers "It must be full time now, let's see how he got on" They put the TV on.

"Result from the Estadio Do Maracana : Brazil 1(Neymar 10 minutes) - England 1 (Rooney 89 minutes)."

They can't believe it, he has single handedly got a draw against England!! They rush back to the Stadium to congratulate him. They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, sat with his head in his hands.

He refuses to look at them. "I've let you down, I've let you down"

"Don't be stupid, you got a draw against England, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very very end!"

"No, No, I have, I've let you down!. I got sent off after 12 minutes

To be honest I haven't a clue. At the start I thought Brazil v Argentina and I'll stick with that but anything could happen at this World Cup as has proved so far. France are looking a good bet though. Had the USA to win 2-1 tonight and then Portugal equalise with seconds to go. Bah!

if you've chosen Belgium for the final based on the games so far, you must know something we don't!

I've not looked how it could work out from each side of the draw, but if possible i could see a Germany vs Brazil or Argentina final.

However; based on the way they've been playing, we'd be foolish to write off Chile.

Wouldn't it be brilliant if there was a new winner.

Sorry to see england not progress. the atmosphere and feelgood factor is great when they are in and progressing. this brought a wry smile this morning:

My wife said to me this week: "Whenever a World Cup game is on, let's eat something to do with the competing team for dinner that night."

When the Mexico game was on, we had burritos.

When Spain played we had paella.

The Japan game, we had noodles.

USA night, we had burgers.

Italy, we had pizza.

Tuesday is England, so we're going out...

Before tournament I thought Argentina & Brazil faves but quite fancied Chile as an outside bet - haven't changed my mind on Chile but don't think the other two are that special. Maybe Chile to win group and eventually meet Costa Rica in QF with Dutch putting out Brazil.

    • Per Cllr McAsh, as quoted above: “We are currently updating our Enforcement Policy and changes will allow for the issuing of civil penalties ranging from £175 to £300 for visible smoke emissions, replacing the previous reliance on criminal prosecution. " Is anyone au fait with the Clean Air Act 1993, and  particularly with the state of 'Smoke Control' law and practice generally?  I've just been looking  through some of it for the first time and, afaics, the civil penalties mentioned  were introduced into the Clean Air Act, at Schedule 1A, in May 2022.  So it seems that, in this particular,  it's a matter of the enforcement policy trailing well behind the legislation.  I'm not criticising that at all, but am curious.
    • Here's the part of march46's linked-to Southwark News article pertaining to Southwark Council. "Southwark Council were also contacted for a response. "Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets & Waste said: “One of Southwark’s key priorities is to create a healthy environment for our residents. “To achieve this we closely monitor legislation and measures that influence air pollution – our entire borough apart from inland waterways is designated as a Smoke Control Area, and we also offer substantial provision for electric vehicles to promote alternative fuel travel options and our Streets for People strategy. “We as a council support the work of Mums for Lungs and recognise the health and environmental impacts of domestic solid fuel burning, particularly from wood-burning appliances. “We are currently updating our Enforcement Policy and changes will allow for the issuing of civil penalties ranging from £175 to £300 for visible smoke emissions, replacing the previous reliance on criminal prosecution.  “This work is being undertaken in collaboration with other London boroughs as part of the pan-London Wood Burning Project, which aims to harmonise enforcement approaches and share best practice across the capital.” ETA: And here's a post I made a few years ago, with tangential relevance.  https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/278140-early-morning-drone-flying/?do=findComment&comment=1493274
    • The solicitor is also the Executor. Big mistake, but my Aunt was very old, and this was the Covid years and shortly after so impossible to intervene and get a couple of close relatives to do this.  She had no children so this is the nephews and nieces. He is a single practitioner, and most at his age would have long since retired - there is a question over his competence Two letters have already gone essentially complaining - batted off and 'amusingly' one put the blame on us. There are five on our side, all speaking to each other, and ideally would work as a single point of contact.  But he has said that this is not allowed - we've all given approval to act on each others behalf. There are five on her late husband's side, who have not engaged with us despite the suggestion to work as a team, There is one other, who get's the lion's share, the typicical 'friend', but we are long since challenging the will. I would like to put another complaint together that he has not used modern collective communication (I expect that he is incapable) which had seriously delayed the execution of the will.   I know many in their 80s very adept with smart phones so that is not an ageist comment. The house has deteriorated very badly, with cold, damp and a serious leak.  PM me if you want to see the dreadful condition that it is now in. I would also question why if the five of us are happy to work together why all of us need to confirm in writing.             The house was lived in until Feb 23, and has been allowed to get like this.
