Twitter is used in many different ways.

As dulwichmum says, its nearest equivalent that people are familiar with is Facebook status updates.

Twitter updates, or "tweets" as they are sometimes called, are limited in length to 140 characters.

Apart from that, there are no rules about how to use Twitter.

Some people use it to share ideas, thoughts and links or to ask questions.

You can choose whether to make your updates public or private.

If you think someone is saying something interesting you can "follow" them, which subscribes you to their updates, which will appear on your Twitter homepage.

You can see who other people are following and who's following them.

Well known people on Twitter include Stephen Fry, Imogen Heap, Andy Murray, Barack Obama (very quiet since he won the election).

Companies use Twitter to send out updates about their products and services and answer customers' questions.

Even Tower Bridge has an account on Twitter, which sends out a tweet whenever the bridge is opening or closing.

There is a growing number of Twitter tools available to write, read and manage your updates, including apps for the iPhone.

One of the first and still one of the best applications I've seen is Twittervision - which overlays tweets from Twitter on a google map of the world, so you get to see where people are when they tweet something.

rather cynical Steve isn't it? I thought beatnic's post was really useful and even tho I know what twitter is anyway it managed to convey it's potential usefulness in a way I haven't previously seen. Wish I knew about the London Bridge one for example - I've been caught by that fekker a few times!

SteveT - I really hope you don't treat everyone on the East Dulwich Forum like that. It might put people off posting.

Worth noting that beatnic also sought to harness the power of Twitter for the good of the EDF recently:

Sweet Mr Beatnic is always incredibly informative and knowledgable.

SteveT, you need to get out more, pull the cabbage from between your teeth and try mingling in polite society. You never know, you might make some friends.

On second thoughts, why dont you get yourself a dog.

My apologies to you beatnic, and to any other forumistas whom I may have unintentionally insulted in my, 'too direct' line of questioning.

It smelled of, not exactly a hard sell, but a rather persistant one.

I shall try to be a little more tactful in future.

I'm the only animal in this household, as dogs and any other animal, are such a time consuming commitment.

No probs.

I do get quite enthusiastic about things sometimes, but I'm certainly not a pusher.

I'm also well aware that Twitter isn't for everyone. Some people very enthusiastically tell me how much they hate it, or at least the idea of it, and can't see the point.

Rest assured, if I was in any way affiliated with any company's product or service I would declare it.

    • I wonder where he could be deported to, Hungary the obvious candidate in Europe, perhaps he would get on well with Modi?   Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage both said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood should look at whether Abd El Fattah's citizenship could be revoked to enable his swift removal from the UK. Farage said in a letter to Mahmood: "It should go without saying that anyone who possesses racist and anti-British views such as those of [Mr Abd El Fattah] should not be allowed into the UK." So just racists views are ok Nige?

    • If it's the same one I'm thinking of, it was a little further down the road towards LL, probably where the Fresh Flower Company is today. I'd forgotten all about it, with good reason. I think it disappeared before Blue Mountain opened and became a pizza place? I once bought a carton of milk from the deli and when I opened it, it was solid. I did get my money back though.
    • But when was it posted?! I haven't posted any this year. I can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant cost of the stamps, and at least I can sort of honestly blame it on illness. If I can't hand deliver them, I send e-cards. I know it's not the same, but it's very much easier. And as for the people who still send pages of closely handwritten letters .... very admirable in terms of the hours it must have taken them to write them,  but they remind me of those spoofs eg x has just passed all their many important exams with the highest marks possible, y has just walked round the world in a week, z has just become the first person ever to be knighted twice, we are about to fly off for our fifteenth exotic holiday this year ....... Or else (or sometimes and) they are full of who has had what illnesses and accidents and other catastrophes. Is this just my relatives and distant friends? Am I somehow attracting these reams of handwritten paper?
