I quite like the guys who stand up and preach on the bus. I hate all the mutters and tuts from (usually white middle class) people. I don't believe everything they say by a long shot, but I respect the passion they show, and would rather listen to someone talking with passion about something they believe in, than a load of school kids shouting about something that was "bare funy bruv".

whaaaaat? That's not passion, that's being nuts. If they started showing similar passion about anything else - cheese? - it wouldn't be their passion you admired surely? When I'm on a bus I don't want to hear anyone banging on about anything - be it religion, or school kids shouting about something that was "bare funy bruv". Call me a white male if you like but as a raised working-class catholic, "passion" for religion is a bone of contention for me

Expected as much Sean from a few of you, but I have seen a couple of them who have been quite moving, and it's not nuts as you say, they believe in spreading the word, and are doing so. If anything, it's more clever than knocking on people's doors, at least they're guaranteed a semi captive audience.

I am quite envious (maybe not right word to use) of people that have a strong faith. My friend's mum is Jehova's Witness and the amount of illness and major ops she has been through in the last five years is crazy - major ops like hip replacement, heart bypass, eye operation. She always remains positive and strong. She's always happy and the docs/surgeons don't seem optimistic about the outcome of these ops and yet she always comes out fighting fit and OK. Her attitude is all down to her faith.

I truly believe in God but I don't think you need to follow a certain religion be it - Islam or Christianity -

to be a true believer.

It's nuts. Someone believing passionately in something does not give them the right to preach it to/inflict it upon people who do not want to hear it, especially when they cannot get away. Even if the recipient is upper/higher/middle(higher or lower)/lower/working/under class.

Imagine if you were stuck in a lift with a Man Utd supporter who shouted violently in your face for half an hour about how Ronaldo is God. Is that ok?

In my experience, whih is only twice I think, lots of people on the bus have been getting in to it, and raised their hands to pray with the guy "preaching". Others can easily get off, or go downstairs, or like I did, listen to their music and read their book.

Keef - easy! I asked the question out of serious inquiry - I don't know a single JW who would have a blood tranfusion and I had no idea you could do the major level surgery described without it. I wasn't trying to patronise

But when you have people who actually die through not accepting blood because of faith why am I up my own arse??

And hang on- this thread is about religious people who come around and annoy people - so I'm hardly out of line surely?

And I suspect we will always clash on it Keef - but looking at history, religion has won the whole "superior" "looking down at people" argument. Ditto the people on the bus preaching at me - it is they who are being smug and arrogant - I was busy keeping my beliefs to myself until they started

And then look at the things you call Gillian McKeith - who are you or anyone to say she is nuts for example? I might well be wrong about beliefs out of thin air, but I'm consistent...

And why can we disagree about lots of things but it's only religion that makes you want to punch me on the nose?

Ahhh that's democracy and politics and the such like Brendan, my reference was purely in the context of religious preachers on a bus, and in a lift. It reminds me of what my old primary school teacher used to say to me frequently "now that's not a very nice thing to do is it?"

I encountered a bus 'preacher' on the day after the London bombs asking if we were prepared to meet our maker, that she was prepared to meet her maker. People were genuinely terrified by her, what gives her the right, her god given righteousness presumably, because of course she is doing the right thing in the eyes of her evangelical god, so it can't be wrong can it.

Believe you me she very nearly met her maker there and then ?$*(%&"$(%$ Bitch!!

Unsurprisingly I'm with Sean on this one.

I couldn't give two hoots who believes what as long as it doesn't intefere with my life or cause ill towards others. Clearly, some chap (and I'll refrain from assessing his mental health) on a bus/lift/confined space lecturing others on the word of the Lord (their capitals, not mine) are transgressing on this agreement.

It is not acceptable behaviour. And I really find it hard to believe that that is up for discussion. At the very least with JWs you can close the door on them.
