I have no idea about him generally but I would imagine a lot of mayors have done something similar - local papers full of thsi stuff, connection between council and community and stuff - and it would raise more donations that way

I dare say if you were mayor you wouldn't confine it to just facebook friends - you'd be aware of the wider civic audience

Just seems unduly harsh is all

That's because you're in Mr Reasonable overdrive this week. And yes everything you say is probably true (except I still wouldn't be doing it if I was mayor). But this particular guy just makes me bristle in a big way and seeing him doing anything for publicity just makes me want to spit.
I was with someone who went on and on about doing the ice-bucket challenge (seemed to be in the hope I might donate). As luck would have it someone with a normal bucket was collecting for the National Association for Crohn's and Colitis so I completely emptied all my small change into their bucket.

    • It should be easy enough to point out to anyone even thinking of voting reform that should they take power they will have no impact. And will make things worse.  And if people think politicians break promises now and reform are a breath of fresh air then they ain’t seen nothing yet  but they won’t really care about immigration if reform do win  uk used to be about law and order and now we have dim talking heads everywhere unchallenged going “leave the ECHR, stuff the judges, just do it!!”   like life is that simple sweeties
    • I have been reliably informed that it's not the same group.
    • my bet is it's the same group and no amount of talking to is going to make a difference.
    • Definitely not intended  to come across as "gleeful". Quite the opposite, because developments such as this will only encourage extreme right-wingers such as Reform. And heaven help us if they ever formed a government. It's incumbent on Labour to come up with an effective  policy to "smash the gangs" otherwise we are facing Farage and his gang further down the road.
