But PJ Harvey? Even if only for Rid of Me, Stories from.... and Let England Shake. 3 completely different albums but all equally brilliant.Laura Marling's a strange one- I thought her debut was terrific, and I don't think she's made a bad album but i rarely bother listening to her. I saw her play Scala on the back of the first album and it was mesmerising.I didn't think anyone other than me rated Dirty Projector's that highly. I think they're one of the most interesting bands around. Beautiful, unusual harmonies from the girls, great guitar work from Dave Longstreth and some good songwriting to boot. Sometimes the hooks are hidden so deep it takes listen after listen after listen to catch them and that some people don't have the patience for that but that's a big part of the joy of music for me- songs/bands that really creep up on you tend to be the ones that have more longevity. I find that's the case with the National, especially their earlier stuff (in particular Sad Songs....).I loved the second Wavves album, King of The Beach and thought the first wasn't bad. Not got round to the two since though.I think Kings of Leon are the most overrated band of recent times. Their first album wasn't bad- a fun southern rock album thick with hooks and no pretensions but they went down hill very quickly after that.I also think Bright Eyes were great, although I'm not so taken with his solo stuff. He's a fantastic performer too. El Pibe
PJ Harvey is the one that I like most in that list, but she seems to have attained some sort of god status amongst critics, and given I find her output patchy (oh but when she hits highs they *are* high) I think she merits overrated, but don't mistake that for bad.I took me a while to work out that Wavves is just boring, fuzz is there for emotional effect, not to mask the fact that you don't have a melody, admittedly he may have improved, I wouldn't know.dirty Projectors are another critics darling. I've tried to like them, I don't know if I'm missing something, but if I have to work that hard to simply squueze some actual enjoyment rather than some sort of admiration of someone's wanking ability I'd rather spend my time more fruitfully elsewhere. I do adore the national though. They've been at it for years and seem to be in danger of become darlings, though it's not really their fault in this case, they've not dramatically changed their approach in a decade. If we're going fo underrated though, Built to Spill leap to mind. Pavement stole the music press pages (and were perhaps overrated though I'm a massive fan, and Malkmus's subsequent solo/jicks stuff) and they were criminally ignored.Ooh, and I too quite like Laura, she's good at what she does, it's just i have several artists of a similar ilk in my collection who do it better. I guess she just did it when there was a lull in the music scene here, just as some other female artists were beginning to do their stuff too. Best of luck to her, good lass. seemster
Crumbs, not sure what difference being a cover makes to my dislike of it but a quick look on wikipedia suggests you are spot on - covered a couple of times, failed to chart on the second / third attempts - here are the lyrics for anyone who remains unconvinced...We get it on most every night when that moon is big and bright its a supernatural delight everybodys dancing in the moonlight we get everybody here is out of sight they dont bark and they dont bite they keep things loose they keep it tight everybodys dancing in the moonlight (Sorry for going a bit off-topic with an overrated song... Unfortunately Frog Chorus, Mull of Kintyre, and a string of performances at major events, bobbing his stupid turtle head along to "Hey Jude", have completely soiled his legacy. That awful thing he did with Dave Grohl didn't help either. The popular opinion now seems to be that he has always been shit, but it's simply not the case.Surely Keane, Travis, and similar latter-day easy listening is not really critically acclaimed, and therefore not overrated as such..
