Hi, I need some good advice on how to stop foxes coming into my garden. At least twice a week foxes come into my garden, come up to my back door and that sets our dog off barking but they don't get scared off by him barking. They just stand there while our dog barks, I end up getting up to see them off myself, still with our dog barking. Does anyone know a way of stopping them from coming over in our garden. We have three cats as well so to put something down that may harm our animal wouldn't do. Please can anyone help.

What Aquarius Moon says..

It's a privilege to see Foxes in town.

They are beautiful creatures and people need to learn to live along side them.

I had two that used to follow me home or wait for me.

They would sit on my car when it was parked outside my house.

They recognised me.

Sadly foxes do not survive long and they have been long gone.

Well I am DulwichFox and there is a reason for that.

Foxy.

Cats cause more problems in gardens digging up & pooing everywhere.

If you can happily tolerate cat poo (bag it & bin it) then you can do the same for foxes.

And even if you're not happy, bear in mind that foxes are not domestic pets. They are wild animals and have to poo somewhere.

Thanx for that advice everyone, I'm not saying I want to harm the fox, it's not that I don't like the look of them, I didn't mind seeing them in my garden a few years ago befor We got our dog that looks like a baby fox. I don't want the barking of our dog when they comes to the back door. Our dog is only protecting his home.

That's very true.. I put food by the wheel of my car. They seem to take one piece

of food and run off to eat it or save it for later. They never come into my small garden.

Some times they sit or stand outside my gate. They are very patient.

Even when I leave my door open to get something for them to eat, the Never venture

inside my garden.

Whereas dogs scoff their food down, Foxes eat very slowly and quiet delicately.

It's amazing to stand back and watch them.

Sometimes if I put out fish the local cat grabs it and the Fox stands back.

Foxes are scared of cats and will seldom take one on.

Care needs to be taken when feeding Squirrels

Peanuts and Corn Are Not Good For Squirrels!

Peanuts are not nuts! They are legumes, and unless a squirrel lives next to a field of peanuts where they might dig some

up to eat, they are not a typical food that squirrels eat! Peanuts have very poor nutritional quality. An occasional peanut

will not hurt a squirrel as long as its shell is not growing an invisible toxic mold that can kill them.

Field corn is also not a natural food for squirrels, and can grow the same

deadly mold! Yet millions of people put ears of dried corn out for squirrels.

Foxes eat meat and do not like / eat Quorn meat substitute.

It's not just Foxes that makes dogs bark. My road has very short front gardens.

When I walk down my road in the evening, there are 2-3 dogs that regularly bark as I walk past.

They are protecting their home but also curious or excited. Ask any Postman lol

I do not feed them regularly. They take up food within 5-10 mins even when there is no sign of a fox.

They do not leave anything that is suitable for them to eat.

They like fried chicken. They do not like spare ribs.

They like raw / cooked steak.

They also catch and eat rats & mice.

I've confessed to doing this on previous threads and I find it works. You need early-morning pee, preferably male, in an old washing-up liquid bottle, add garlic, leave to ferment for a few days then squirt around gateposts and anywhere you see evidence they've been. Repeat every day or two in wet weather, less often if it's dry. Your own pets shouldn't mind too much as they know your smell already. Doesn't harm the foxes, just makes them go elsewhere.

Would you prefer people to use chemicals or broken glass? It's completely natural, biodegradable and renewable. I'm not suggesting spraying it anywhere else.

Pretty sure I haven't said anything about people peeing in the streets either, so not sure what you're implying there, but never mind.

They do go into lofts and chew the wiring though, it happened to me.

    • Hope you all had a happy Christmas & good New Year  Here are your Gardening Tips  for February . Their not too long, but they need doing if you are to have a good garden this year  1. Pruning.  Before the birds need a nest prune your hedges especially the deciduous ones . Important to still prune Roses . Cut back Rose bushes hard to a bud & creating a rounded plant . Prune your trees before the sap rises especially Buddleja Hydrangeas hardy Fuschias Lavatera Bay Leylandii You can cut back Spring flowering tree’s after they have flowered later in Spring  Prune climbing plants like Virginia creeper & Ivy very hard . Remember they will grow back prolifically  You can prune Wisteria twice a year & February is one of them . Cut back the whips (smaller branches) to 3 buds before the main stems . You can prune a few of the thicker stems to give the plant shape & form. Give it a feed if you want it to flower  Cut back any grasses so they can grow in Spring  Prune Jasmines & winter flowering Jasmines. They will reward you with beautiful smelling flowers during Spring & Summer    2 If it ever gets dry again mow your lawn at top height of your mower. Repair patches & trim all borders with a half moon spade . It’s a good time of year to lay new lawns levelling the ground adding sand feed & topsoil    Power wash your patios paths & wooden structures & furniture. You can then give them an appropriate treatment when they have dried out  That’s it for now. I told you it wasn’t too long, Do these if you can, but if you want someone to carry it out for you, I recommend any of the we’ll recommended gardeners on the forum including myself & my colleagues  Please give me a call on :  07759862191. Well done if you managed to read this. Nigel
