Attack in Surrey Canal, Peckham (Lounged)

Hi All

Am sure I've seen a thread on this somewhere before but just wanted to say that Tosh was cycling home through the Surrey Canal area on Friday night and he was set upon by a group of six blokes. Fortunately, despite them kicking him in the leg to try to get him off his bicycle, Tosh managed to stay on and get past them without further incident. He parked over and watched as the group tried to get a second cyclist off his bikee, by which time Tosh was phoning the police. The second cyclist also got through and the group went for a third cyclist, again with no luck, and apparently fled. The police did come and take a report. Just another warning to all who cycle this way to be very careful, perhaps cycle in pairs? Also, Friday night apparently the worst!

It's very dangerous along Surrey canal at night-time, and would urge everyone never ever to cycle through there during darkness. During the day it is well populated but keep your antennae on for any suspicious trouble. If in doubt, turn back and take the 63 bus route. Was whoever was attacked attacked at night-time?

I had my hand broken in a similar attack to this a few years ago. A group of youths were wacking cyclists with large branches as they passed. I parried a blow with my hand and broke a knuckle even with motorbike gloves on. Reported to police, but not sure what action was taken. Sad to hear this is still going on.

I think you'd have to conclude it's just not worth the risk of riding in this area, especially after dark, and even in groups. Whilst i haven't been attacked directly, I've had things thrown at me on a number of occasions in this area, so avoid it like the plague these days.

Thanks for the warning. It does seem that this particular route home is lethal.

Do you know what time this happened?

I go home this way everyday but will never use the Canal path after dark and use Trafalgar/Sumner Roads instead. They are a bit bumpy but otherwise fine.

I've cycled through there, daily, for the best part of 3 years.

It's a combination of luck and common sense.

If you're not confident going down there as someone says use the 63 route, but if someone's going to take you off your bike they're going to do it anywhere.

I am horrified by this. Poor Tosh. I think that none of us should ever go to Peckham, not ever. Indeed, I am about to pen a letter to my MP insisting that the whole of Dulwich become a gated community.

Perhaps we could have some kind of electric wiring type of arrangement constructed. I hear that the building of ten foot walls can be expensive.

I imagine the residents of Peckham are already WAY ahead of you in getting this fast-tracked through.

A massive great flyover from East Dulwich Road to Brixton would be a nice addition.

Funnily enough, I attended jury service last year on a similar case where attacks were happening on cyclists using the canal in Hackney. Police kept a watch and caught the three lads involved. Can't see why they couldn't do something similar here if it's happening regularly. There shouldn't be no-go areas - and if we all avoid it presumably the attackers will just move somewhere else to rob people.

Plagued by this in one area of Bristol I was reading the other night where 2 main gangs are involved, apparently.

In Bristol there is a clear description of Members of the 2 Gangs who are racially diverse so it is "relatively" easy for the cyclists there to be additionally vigilant.

They've built a "Protective wall" around Israel...lets use the proposed Zebra crossing money to build a wall around ED!

The bit probably being referred to here (it used to run all the way to the Thames) runs up the side of Peckham library up to the Old Kent Road. It's since been filled in but you can still see remnants of a towpath.

As with all areas of London at night, it is recommended you exercise caution and common sense. And also that you're more likely to be hit by a car than attacked down there.

Nothing quite so vulgar dear boy. We should be much more civil and relocate the populace en mass towards the estuary. I believe the Soviets did something similar with mixed results. In short always move the problem elsewhere.

Well there is a question! I think so but I know others that don't. I think an exaggerated version of the stereotypical Dulwich Village-living, high-earning-partner-marrying, lady of lunch who has no concept of reality beyond her provileged borders is ripe for humour and I think she hits the target as often as not

But if casual readers of the forum don't know that, then it just appears crass and offensive which I think is a shame

Rubbish - the reason they use the Surrey Canal is because (a) it's darker and therefore easier to hide, (b) they're less likely to get caught and © it's regularly used by cyclists. I don't imagine the same group go about knocking cyclists off their bikes on the Walworth Road for example.

well in this instance

a) I happen to know the guy attacked on this thread

b) I also know someone close to dulwichmum

c) I like Peckham and normally defend it against people (looking at you Louisa!) who because of some very-visible problems dismiss the whole place as vile, when there are many, many reasons to like Peckham

so of course I'm conciliatory on this one. But "always"??? a leeeeeeeetle bit of a stretch no?
