TomJI
Dear Curry ClubI've just moved to the area and I'm taking my brother and his wife out for a curry tonight.I realise this could spark a long discussion given how many curryhouses you've visited, but where do you think is the best Indian food in East Dulwich? Are there any to definately avoid?ThanksTom Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55453-best-curry-in-the-curry-clubs-opinion/ Share on other sites

Mick Mac
I'd recommend Tandoori Nights. The best food and nicer ambience too. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55453-best-curry-in-the-curry-clubs-opinion/#findComment-831485 Share on other sites

Tandoori Nights is my least favourite Curry House and the only one I never go to.. Went there once with the Curry Club last year. Very expensive and poor food and service.C.C. is supposed to be going there next month. have not decided if I will be going along..On the one occasion many years back I went there the Chicken was cut in perfect 3/4" cubes like the frozen stuff from Iceland. The sauce resembled Tomato soup with curry powder in.The Naan bread was actually a Pitta bread like you get in a kebab shop..It seems to be popular but I really do not know why..DulwichFox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55453-best-curry-in-the-curry-clubs-opinion/#findComment-831534 Share on other sites
Michael Palaeologus
My experience is that for most of my visits the food was good. It took a dip when the proprietor was away for an extended period and picked up again on his return.Foxy, you have observed that Jaflong's food has been very variable, yet you keep going back. One poor meal at Tandoori Nights and you condemn it. Tandoori nights is a little more expensive than others. For instance an Onion Bhaji at Tandoori Nights is 3.95, at Jaflong it is 2.85. That difference adds up over a meal, but not excessively. We will see how things are at the next curry club meeting. DulwichFox
Michael P.. I report my findings according to each experience.. I have had more good experiences in both Jaflong and Dulwich Tandoori than poor . I generally only pass judgement in the Curry Club Thread I had 2 poor meals recently At Dul. Tan. and have had 2 -3 good ones since... The food at Jaflong took a dip but since Jan when they stopped selling alcohol the food has been excellent. Food at The Curry Cabin is also very good and is my first choice for Take Away. Surma and Mirash are good choices whilst I reserve judgement on the service in Veer Zara. But then Veer Zara is the biggest Restaurant although Dul. Tan. is busier and sometimes it is necessary to book. You cannot compare Food and Service between an individual visit and a mass C.C. visit when there are 12 of us. goosey-goosey
I agree with Foxy about Surma and Mirash, though I'm a little concerned with the recent quality of Surma. Still, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Must give The Curry Cabin takeaway a go.God, I love curry. Otta
I'm out of date, but certainly in the past Tandoori Nights was easily the best. Foxy talks about "many years back", I don't know how many, but I do know that I used to go for curries a lot in the area, and TN was a cut above (and you didn't mind paying a bit more). Was never a huge Mirash fan, and always quite liked the Curry Cabin, but that may be more down to nostalgia (first ever curry there).I think it's basically down to personal taste. Mick Mac
I have had one bad meal in TN and it happened to be a curry club night. Has always otherwise been good though and still my favourite. They can all have an off night. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55453-best-curry-in-the-curry-clubs-opinion/#findComment-831571 Share on other sites
DulwichFox
Otta I went to the Tandoori Nights the first weekIt opened. Recommended by Raul from SMBS. The food was Pakistani with lots Of seeds and spices. It was veryDifferent and very good. Not sure when That was. It went down hill some time laterFoxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55453-best-curry-in-the-curry-clubs-opinion/#findComment-831572 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
Good grief! I'm going to have to agree with Dulwich Fox. That has to be a first. Tandoori Nights was great when it first opened but the last few meals I've had in there over the past three or four years have been distinctly average if not distinctly diabolical. Call me old school but for general ambiance, pricing and consistently good food my preference would be The Mirash and I've always like The Surma too, though the Mirash takes first place for me. For takeaways or home delivery though it has to be Spice Republic. Consistently superb.Anyway... not another fecking "what's the best curry in ED thread!" Otta
I wasn't thinking of Ganapatti as it's not in ED, but yes, easily the best food.RE Tandoori Nights, fair enough, will take people's word for it. Was great 10 years ago, but I did say I was out of date. Jeremy
Tandoori Nights used to be good.. going back ten years or so, the food was very aromatic and flavoursome, without the huge amounts of oil. Then the last time I went, it was as Fox describes. Small pieces of uniform meat in a sweep soupy sauce. I would give it another go, but eating dinner out is such a rarity these days, I'd prefer not to take a punt.Dulwich Tandoori is our regular for an "old-school" curry and is always pretty good. titch juicy
Surma for me. Been consistently good for the 6 odd years I've been ordering from there. Have tried a few of the others for a change but nothing has been as good.
