It's the eclectic mix which makes it interesting. I'd rather have Dog About Town over an identi-kit coffee shop chain any day; lovely people, have been part of the road for years, and great window peeking entertainment. If you ever get a chance watch the movie 'Last Orders' (Helen Mirren, Michael Caine et al) - Bellenden Road (and Dog About Town) figures prominently. How can a SE London road immortalised on film ever close down?! Pah! Never!

Yes, in the film the Wishing Well is the boozer. Lucius & Richards was old Micky Caines butchers, and at one point a couple of the characters ride down Bellenden Road on the top deck of a double decker

In case anyone doesn't know, Isabelle is now offering cake, cookies and muffins as well as hot drinks. She also has tables outside!

I got banned a couple of times. This is my 3rd login.

Back on topic, the 24-hour booze store on Bellenden is also particularly useful. : )

I live on Bellenden Rd and Love it, Ive lived in this area for 30 years and I dont plan to move!

But I do have someting to grumble about! THE BINS!

I counted 21 bins on Bellenden Rd between the junctions with Choumert Rd and Maxted Rd today, and the one near the kebab shop was over flowing with oil drums, black bin bags etc. Other shopping streets in london manage to keep the bins out of sight. Surely that is possible here too? In fact the shops between Chadwick Rd and Choumert Rd have hardly any bins outside so it looks possible to put them away. Its such a waste of the fabulous wide pavement, with beautiful bar code paving design to obscure it with rubbish. Sitting outside drinking coffee or buying organic food would be a much more appealing prospect if the view/smell was a bit better!

Has anyone else noticed this? (Im really not as up tight as this post makes me sound! I just want to see BR thriving.)

Have you pointed this out to Southwark council, local councillors, associations, etc ? They rely on people like you to point these things out. I've done this with fly tipping locally, graffiti and something is always done

Thanks Tommy. I will start writing letters! Its encouraging to hear that sometimes things get done as a result. Im sure it would be good for business, and just lift the area generally and with shops closing and new ones brave enough to try to open in these crunchy times the street needs all the help it can get.

No probs - I usually fill in the online forms on the Southwark council website.

I do agree that Bellenden Road could really cash in on the cafe culture that some of the shops are going for. In its favour its got the wide pavements that LL hasn't

No, I'm not from south - originate in North London - though live in ED and have been a transplant in the south for many years. Hadnt been to BR for ages and am glad to hear you are thriving. Love the 'hood.

I can't hear Prince Albert without a mental picture of the piercing of the same name popping into my head.

I was driving through the Bellenden road area an the way back to ED and and I happened to notice a printers just off the road (I think?) it was stating that it was able to do same day printing. Does anyone know what it is called or have the contact number?

Thanks

Hi,

Well, I feel brave enough as a young and passionate architect to set up my practice Archic at 98,Bellenden Road. The house is under refurbishment right now and you will be able to view it inside for an open day in mid-June.

I lived on Queen's Road side of Peckham but just fell in love with the Bellenden Road. Whatever it is now, or will be in the future, here reside real people, cute independant shops, nice and friendly people within a classic charming streetscape that used to be a quality georgian suburbia. But everyone forgets to talk about the parks that are all over the place! I'm going to love it (yes, I might get a dog!)

David.

Ooh I was wondering what was happenning to no. 98 - my friend used to live there and I thought some serious work was going on there when I walked past the other day. Good luck with it. Oh and good luck with being opposite Ganapati and not draining all your profits in there - it's all too tempting when they're cooking and the smell wafts across the road!

    • I see that there was a government consultation started in July 2024, a response, and then a revision to the National Planning Policy Framework, and then to the Green Belt guidance in February 2025, https://www.gov.uk/guidance/green-belt .  It includes the updates but doesn't give the nescient much clue of what was materially changed. There will probably be some good, and less good, summaries to be found.

She lost her job because she broke the ministerial code of conduct - that has nothing to do with the media. Was she under the spotlight because she was outspoken and happy to aggressivley attack any indiscretion of her opponents? Absolutely. But what's that saying: those who shout loudest often have the most to hide...never has that seemed more apt? Given that scrutiny she would have been wise to have been whiter than white but she wasn't and she has paid the price.
