The doors were always meant to be open as they were designed as a replacement for the old Routemasters which had conductors. No conductors = closed doors = no movement of air, given that the new ones have sealed windows and only feeble air-con.

At least because there are two stairwells, people do not congregate around the middle door (back door on conventional buses) which is my bete noire.

Why is it obscene? According to what I've read its origins go back to Scottish English in the 1500's.

I think Louisa means the particular use of it, when the "Wow!" is addressed as if to an invisible friend, suggesting, "I'm astonished that my parents have the cheek to ask me not to do that" etc. It is very annoying.
