When it come to Street Cred.

Funny how people on here go on about what a wonderful meal they have had at / from..

Ganapati -- Olivelli -- Yama Momo -- The Begging Bowl -- Franklins -- The Palmerston -- Belair -- The Crooked Well.

Only Louisa and myself ever admit to going to Kebab & Wine.

How on Earth have they survived 30 so years.

Yes - everyone sometimes overdoes the drink at the EDT, and then ends up in K&W for some chips etc to soak it up on the way home... Doesn't really make it a place to have a "wonderful meal...."

I seldom drink more than 2 pints. maybe 3 . but I sill go to K&W. Seldom buy chips

and I do not eat it on the way home.

No. But they sure do make us all know about it when they do..

No one goes on about having a good breakfast in Johnnies Caf?.

DulwichFox

so whats the point of the comparison with K&W ?!

Come on Foxy baby, you have to work with us, you have to kinda let us in to the joke too !!

BTW.

At 1600hrs on a Friday the Great Exhibition turns into a massive pram park, 10 Mum's nursing a half. Point of mentioning it is... I had a WONDERFUL SANDWICH there (before baby-fest started) !

Comparison with K&W needs no explanation.

You went to the Great Exhibition for a sandwich ? A SANDWICH.. ?

Link on how to make a basic sandwich 9 steps with pictures.... http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Sandwich

You can use your an alternative filling. and you do not need to use sliced bread. Experiment. its fun.

Foxy

Fox - you say it's light hearted banter -my sides have split btw - but lets be honest. The only chip you have is a massive class one on your shoulder i.e that it's "not for the likes of you".

From the Olivelli thread:

Dulwich Fox: "Looked in today.. Looks very Smart. Far too posh for likes of me"

Get over it Foxy. It's great if you prefer your Ayres/K&W/EDT combo. Nobody is knocking you. It's where you feel comfortable. But there is no kind of exclusion policy for these "poncey" places. Who gives a shit? You've lived in up and coming ED. Feel sad and reflect on the changes by all means ...but ounce you've lifted yourself from that malaise/analysis why not embrace some of it and try it out?

You might just experience the tiniest fleck of joy old chap. :-)

Mr Ben.. I never seem to understand a word you say or what you are getting at...

'It's great if you prefer your Ayres/K&W/EDT combo. ' What does that mean. ?

Sounds like a bit of inverse Snobbery.

Once again you have hi-jacked what was meant to be a light hearted thread.

You continue to throw insult. You always do. But I guess that's all you know.

You Quoted me as saying

Dulwich Fox: "Looked in today.. Looks very Smart. Far too posh for likes of me"

Was a light hearted aside and I can assure you there are very few places where I might feel uncomfortable

or out of place.

If I liked Pizza or any other Italian food for that matter I would happily eat there.

So get off my case. Haven't you got any homework to do. ?

DulwichFox

Foxy: "You went to the Great Exhibition for a sandwich ? A SANDWICH.. ? "

No, I went there for a pint, then I had another pint, then i realised the only food i could get there without buying a proper meal was sandwich, so I had a pint and a sandwich.

Weird man, shit just happens. But it was..........WONDERFUL..... !!

I know, I know, a sandwich is no more than two pizzas turned face-to-face and cut in two served on a saucer !

The only snobbery I see on this forum is from the posh types who are unwilling to embrace or try out old school ED. But if the likes of the fox don't wish to be ripped off in some fancy pants blow-in joint they're accused of "inverse snobbery" for not trying it out. It's ironically funny.

Louisa.

What was meant as a 'light hearted thread' turns into tit for tat slanging match. Quelle surprise when you start banging on about how it's only you and Louisa that frequent K&W.

You have to pay to get into K&W (late nights) now & even then only if your face fits. Pretty elitist eh! ;)

Also DF the homework jibe isn't very nice, seems quite ageist and I suspect wouldn't be appreciated if it were the other way around & you were berated for being 'old'. Or am I missing the joke/point?

If you are referring to yourself Quids (I'm sure you are), why don't you do something about it?

The deserters and infrequent posters are probably bored at seeing nothing worth commenting on.

And instead of complaining that posts are a tedious load of drivel, bear in mind that at least we are starting threads in order to pass the time and have people to talk to.

So it would be good if you could encourage the regulars to post more often by doing what you do best, start some interesting threads!

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
