Louisa
Great memories JOHNNYBOY. Some of those photographs feel like they were taken only yesterday. Great to see some input from computedshorty on the input pages. I wonder if you have any photographs of the Italian family who ran an ice cream shop on North cross road in the 1930's? Or the pawnbrokers on the corner of Lacon/North Cross road? Same era. Louisa. JOHNNYBOY
Thanks Louisa for your kind words, I wish I did have some photos of the places you mention, unfortunately I don't, but I am always on the look out for new material, I have had quite a bit of help from people who lived in East Dulwich many years ago, I have also uploaded many of my own family photos, my Brother has just found some more photos which he is going to lend me which I shall upload as soon as I can, just trying to make my website as interesting as possible for anyone that might be interestedAll the bestJohnnyboy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/63294-new-photos-memories/#findComment-862964 Share on other sites

Otta
Great stuff Johnnyboy. Don't suppose by any chance you have anything on The Lord Hill pub, Hill Street, Peckham do you?Was my nan's pub for several years until it was demolished in 1972. By all accounts full of villans and dodgy fellas who looked out for her and called her duchess. Did you live nearby Otta ? Do you remember the Dutch Boy Laundry. You may be too young. Otta
No I was brought up on Whateley Road. But my nan had the Lord Hill (it closed 6 years before I was born, by which time she'd moved to Devon). So you could have been served by my nan or possibly even my old man. DulwichFox
Ok.. When you said nan's pub I thought she just drank there.. Probably you dad who served me .. I did not drink much at that time but me and my beat mate had a Brown Ale and a 1/2 a 'Mandy' each and tried to play Darts. We were both giggling and I can remember the barman asking. "You all right lads?" We were the only ones in the bar at the time. Jah Lush
Mandies were Mandrax and they were rather lovely but were banned in this country in 1974. The American equivalent is called Quaalude (Methaqualone) a very popular drug back in the 70s. Nothing to do with fizzy drinks. They're mentioned in Ian Dury's song Billericay Dickie.I bought a lot of brandywhen I was courting Sandytook eight to make her randyand all I had was shandyanother thing with Sandy what often came in handywas passing her a 'Mandy'she didn't half go bandyso you ask Joyce and Vickiif I ever took the mickeyI'm not a flipping thickyI'm Billericay Dickieand I'm doing very well.Oooh.. good excuse to play it. Love the one of> the record storeI bought my first record in Follets. Probably 1957.The 78rpm shellacs were in the semi-basement. Probably because they were far too heavy for the ground floor joists. That was a transitional period. I had a choice. I went for the new-fangled 45rpm 7" vinyl. There was also a "higher class" record store at 40 Lordship Lane: R. DulwichFox
Best record shop was Reed's Record Shop Atwell Rd. Peckham (Off of Rye Lane) http://www.britishrecordshoparchive.org/uploads/7/1/4/7/7147924/1403634.jpg It was run by a seemingly elderly lady (well I was young then) and then later by her son.. They were both very knowledgeable and you could buy almost anything there. edhistory
Does anyone remember Mrs Reed's massive shiney G-clef brooch? No time for time-wasters at Reed's. All records, apart from a handful in the counter browser, were filed in catalogue number order behind the counter.I bought EKL 4001 from her.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/63294-new-photos-memories/#findComment-863267 Share on other sites

Drxyster
Reeds not only sold records, they were also agents for Premier drums. I bought a Premier silver sparkle drum kit from Reeds on HP and my Zildijain cymbals from "Melbourne Pianos. The group was called "The System", we eventually broke up as various members got married, myself included. Our lead singer Martin Barnes, now Martin Lee is the lead singer with 1976 Eurovision song contest winners "Brotherhood of Man".
