HellNoHellYeah
I've been a bit underwhelmed by local curries but want to take a friend out for a local curry tonight. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a curry house where the food is as authentic and tasty as possible? Jeremy
Ganapati, if you can get in, and don't mind the journey to Peckham. In ED my choices would be Omrith, Tandoori Nights, Pistachio Club (in that order) - but I don't think any of them can be described as authentic indian food. HellNoHellYeah
Cheers J, where is Omrith? I've been to TD and the service is great but the food is seriously blah. Pistachio Club food was better, if I remember correctly. What's that Bicicyle Club place like? Marmora Man
Bicycle - awful. AS a somewhat pricey alternative to restaruants listed above (I would also endorse Omrith) try Babur in BRockley Rise - not to everyone's taste but I have always found it to be excellent. Gerrard
Nothing special in my opinion - Ganapati is by far the most authentic, its more Peckham Rye than Peckham, a ten minute walk from Goose Green, well worth the trip. HellNoHellYeah
Maromora, when you say Babura is not to everyone's taste...what do you mean? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211644 Share on other sites
Gerrard
For clarity - Bicycle = nothing special, and I have yet to try Babur... Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211645 Share on other sites
charliecharlie
http://www.babur.info/website/index.php?pageId=restaurantbabur is amazing... though not in ED it's still worth going a bit out of your way Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211649 Share on other sites
Marmora Man
HellNoHellYeah Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Maromora, when you say Babura is not to everyone's> taste...what do you mean? Some people have said that meat is overcooked or too salty (see reviews on website I set up). However, last time I was there I had rabbit - the meats had been wrapped around each other with delicately spiced layers and just delicious, similarly a truly authentic chicken biryani was a revelation and surpassed every previous such dish I had ever tasted.Service, particularly drinks service, can be slow - but the decor and general friendliness makes up for this. Also add that Ganapati is excellent - and at a lower cost. Decor more "rough & ready" but absolutely charming with good food. HellNoHellYeah
I'm wondering whether to ditch Indian and go for Thai. Any good local Thais? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211652 Share on other sites
lozzyloz
Review of Ganapati here. Not to everyones's taste. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211653 Share on other sites
Jeremy
The Thai places in East Dulwich are fairly bog standard. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211657 Share on other sites

bigbadwolf
1) Marmora Man is 100% that the quality of the meat and general quality of food served at Barbur is questionable. One day you leave half on your plate and the next you feel as though you've robbed them.2) Scrap east dulwich. Put your best fighting trousers on and sneak across the border to Forest hills Kafe la behind fozzy hill train station and prepare to be amazed. It also has a Michael Palaeologus 5 star rubber stamp approval. If you disagree you will technically be spitting in his eye. I hear he has breakfast there sometimes as well. Michael Palaeologus
Wht thanks you BBW.I dont think that there are any "authentic" curry houses in the immediate area, if by that you mean similar to what you would get in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. I have found one in South Croydon - full of asian taxi drivers stopping for dhosas and more; I can remember the name at the moment. The rest are down to personal taste. Cafe La is good with a contemporary menu similar to Tandoori Nights (but cheaper), Omrith etc. The rest are good but traditional places that serve anglo-indian food. None of them can afford to be bad as the competition in the area is too fierce.Similarly the Thai places are much of a muchness. You could try Buddah Jazz on Denmark Hill. Most people who have been there (inc me) speak highly of its south east asian food and good service. HAL9000
The nearest authentic Indian/Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants are probably in or around Bethnal Green but steer clear of the obvious Anglo-Indian style tourist traps along Brick Lane. One of my favourites is the Lahore (218 Commercial Road, London, E1 2JT - 0872 148 3764) but there are many similar gems that cater to the local Asian community. HAL9000
Yeah, I know. But there might be someone else out there willing to venture beyond the confines of ED for authentic cuisine since there is next to nothing available locally. Jah Lush
On Lordship Lane I'd go for Tandoori Nights but my favourite locally is Omrith on Forest Hill Road. I must try this Cafe La though. Sounds good. Thanks for the tip. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211800 Share on other sites
charliecharlie
my view is that....the food is pretty good (not mind-bogglingly, life changing-ly so, but consistent in its quality and damn tasty)it is great value for money it's BYO so the bill is always easy on the pocket (and you can drink what every you like) it's cosy, unpretentious, popular and a long standing ED favorite with lots of people I know... it's nearly always full, also a good sign, so best to book and no... before anyone asks.... I do not work there or own it!!!http://assets2.qype.com/uploads/photos/0024/2587/10605562_large.jpg Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6606-the-best-curry-right-now/#findComment-211925 Share on other sites
