Some people have said that meat is overcooked or too salty (see reviews on website I set up). However, last time I was there I had rabbit - the meats had been wrapped around each other with delicately spiced layers and just delicious, similarly a truly authentic chicken biryani was a revelation and surpassed every previous such dish I had ever tasted.

Service, particularly drinks service, can be slow - but the decor and general friendliness makes up for this.

Also add that Ganapati is excellent - and at a lower cost. Decor more "rough & ready" but absolutely charming with good food.

1) Marmora Man is 100% that the quality of the meat and general quality of food served at Barbur is questionable. One day you leave half on your plate and the next you feel as though you've robbed them.

2) Scrap east dulwich. Put your best fighting trousers on and sneak across the border to Forest hills Kafe la behind fozzy hill train station and prepare to be amazed. It also has a Michael Palaeologus 5 star rubber stamp approval. If you disagree you will technically be spitting in his eye. I hear he has breakfast there sometimes as well.

Wht thanks you BBW.

I dont think that there are any "authentic" curry houses in the immediate area, if by that you mean similar to what you would get in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. I have found one in South Croydon - full of asian taxi drivers stopping for dhosas and more; I can remember the name at the moment.

The rest are down to personal taste. Cafe La is good with a contemporary menu similar to Tandoori Nights (but cheaper), Omrith etc. The rest are good but traditional places that serve anglo-indian food. None of them can afford to be bad as the competition in the area is too fierce.

Similarly the Thai places are much of a muchness.

You could try Buddah Jazz on Denmark Hill. Most people who have been there (inc me) speak highly of its south east asian food and good service.

The nearest authentic Indian/Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants are probably in or around Bethnal Green but steer clear of the obvious Anglo-Indian style tourist traps along Brick Lane.

One of my favourites is the Lahore (218 Commercial Road, London, E1 2JT - 0872 148 3764) but there are many similar gems that cater to the local Asian community.

my view is that....

the food is pretty good (not mind-bogglingly, life changing-ly so, but consistent in its quality and damn tasty)

it is great value for money

it's BYO so the bill is always easy on the pocket (and you can drink what every you like)

it's cosy, unpretentious, popular and a long standing ED favorite with lots of people I know...

it's nearly always full, also a good sign, so best to book

and no... before anyone asks.... I do not work there or own it!!!

    • A lot to agree with here - don’t get me started on Irish people complaining about immigration! - but that final paragraph is once again a cop out  there’s a lot of extreme right wing money stirring up the division that people are feeling - but there is zero excuse for handing power to these people. We live in a democracy and if we have enough people willing to give it up then judging those people foolish enough to do so is not only something that will happen, it is something that the rest of us should be morally compelled to do  if someone wouldn’t “normally” vote for a racist party yet somehow will do so because they hear someone like me saying that would be bad, then you better believe I’m judging them

    • The current wave of xenophobia is due to powerful/influential people stirring up hatred.  It;'s what happened in the past, think 1930s Germany.  It seems to be even easier now as so many get their information from social media, whether it is right or wrong.  The media seeking so called balance will bring some nutter on, they don't then bring a nutter on to counteract that. They now seem to turn to Reform at the first opportunity. So your life is 'shite', let;s blame someone else.  Whilst sounding a bit like a Tory, taking some ownership/personal responsibility would be a start.  There are some situations where that may be more challenging, in deindustrialised 'left behind' wasteland we can't all get on our bikes and find work.  But I loathe how it is now popular to blame those of us from relatively modest backgrounds, like me, who did see education and knowledge as a way to self improve. Now we are seen by some as smug liberals......
    • Kwik Fit buggered up an A/C leak diagnosis for me (saying there wasn't one, when there was) and sold a regas. The vehicle had to be taken to an A/C specialist for condensor replacement and a further regas. Not impressed.
