Yuck. I think you and that sleazebag with the high sex drive are one and the same

Peckhamgatecrasher is right. If it is old, worn out, and you spent many weekends hunting high and low in vintage shops, flea markets, etc then it's awesome. It doesn't matter if it's too big or it sags in the middle, just imagine telling all your great chums how you stumbled across it and just had to have it!

However, if you order one from a regular shop then it's tasteless mass produced junk.

Ha Ha

I think what Jeremy is getting at is: Why spend a few hours looking for a tasteful leather sofa which will last you twenty years when you can spend the whole day going to Ikea to buy a horrible one for the same price - that lasts two years, and was shite in the first place.

Right, Jeremy?

Oi, when we first moved into the house we bought we literally filled it to the brim with Billy bookcases.

They're brillyant (geddit).

We slept in them, bathed among them, even put ornaments and books on some of them. And the best bit is that you can make a nice fire out of them after two weeks when they all fall apart.

Geni?s!!

I love Ikea, Jeremy - for some things. But ultimately it's a false economy, in terms of time and money. If (for the sake of argument) you get all your furniture there, I'll warrant that you'll spend more time going there, and more money re-buying furniture than I will during my lifetime.

So (putting the element of 'taste' aside, which is personal of course) your usual arguments of 'not being able to afford it' or 'not having the time' simply don't cut the mustard.

RE leather sofas, I believe the height of manfacturing excellence to the 1970s-1980s, where (Keef) I believe your wishes for soft, cosy leather could be accommodated - in style.

New sprayed leather as opposed to Tanned hide is not that nice ( a little sweaty unless you wish to invest serious money )

We have a couple of danish 60/70's vintage Stouby leather sofa's & they are quite beautifully distressed, in the winter we have dark brown sheepskin rugs on them .Add a log fire & you really can't complain about cold/ hot scenario

Grr

Have you considered hiring-out for porn shoots? There's good money in it. Or if not, you can at least stay and watch.

Jeremy

I now see where you're coming from but I'm afraid that your reply to PGC's deco taste contained about as much sarcasm and 'Klippancy' as a Swedish furniture designers sense of humour. If in future you want a post/message to convey a sense of either sarcasm or flippancy then I suggest think a little bit harder regarding the posts content and how it matches/mocks the post you're attempting to get a rise out of as to give us an ikea as to what you're going on about.

Schoolboy error Brendan - blood and sulphuric acid is no good at all for leather

I think we should put a stop to this. This lovely young lady asks a perfectly reasonable question and immediately gets inappropriately propositioned by Mr Wolf. The conversation then swiftly degenerates into people taking baths in amongst objects with frankly mucky sounding Scandinavian names and wild unsubstantiated claims about the physical properties of mustard. Then quids decides to do a Freddy Kruger on my old sofa.

Enough already.

    • Yes, these are all good points. I agree with you, that division has led us down dangerous paths in the past. And I deplore any kind of racism (as I think you probably know).  But I feel that a lot of the current wave of xenophobia we're witnessing is actually more about a general malaise and discontent. I know non-white people around here who are surprisingly vocal about immigrants - legal or otherwise. I think this feeling transcends skin colour for a lot of people and isn't as simple as, say, the Jew hatred of the 1930s or the Irish and Black racism that we saw laterally. I think people feel ignored and looked down upon.  What you don't realise, Sephiroth, is that I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying. I just think that looking down on people because of their voting history and opinions is self-defeating. And that's where Labour's getting it wrong and Reform is reaping the rewards.
    • @Sephiroth you made some interesting points on the economy, on the Lammy thread. Thought it worth broadening the discussion. Reeves (irrespective of her financial competence) clearly was too downbeat on things when Labour came into power. But could there have been more honesty on the liklihood of taxes going up (which they have done, and will do in any case due to the freezing of personal allowances).  It may have been a silly commitment not to do this, but were you damned if you do and damned if you don't?
    • I'd quit this thread, let those who just want to slag Labour off have their own thread.  Your views on the economy are worth debating.  I'm just stunned how there wasn't this level of noise with the last government.  I could try to get some dirt on Badenoch but she is pointless  Whilst I am not a fan of the Daily Mirror at least there is some respite from Labour bashing. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/grenfell-hillsborough-families-make-powerful-36175862 https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nigel-farage-facing-parliamentary-investigation-36188612
    • That is a bit cake and eat it tho, isn’t it?    At what point do we stop respecting other people’s opinions and beliefs  because history shows us we sometimes simply have no other choice  you are holding some comfort blanket that allows you to believe we are all equal and all valid and we can simply voice different options - without that ever  impacting on the real world  Were the racists we fought in previous generations different? Were their beliefs patronised by the elites of the time? Or do we learn lessons and avoid mistakes of the past?   racists/bigots having “just as much to say” is both true and yet, a thing we have learnt from the past. The lesson was not “ooh let’s hear them out. They sound interesting and valid and as worthy of an audience as people who hold the opposite opinion”
