Bob, I am actually a very happy jovial person, but places who take on this gastropub look and feel lose all identity and I dont feel you can have a laugh because everyone is grouped together round tables eating seabass and drinking mineral water listening to music, it's hardly a knees-up is it?

I actually go to the Hope in Peckham sometimes.. or even better, the Montague Arms which is fabulous...

OMG ... pissheads in a pub? whatever next?!! and I disagree about drug dealers, that sort of activity goes on in all sorts of places, including more often than not these indie style music pubs, so dont tarnish the FHT as it was for that! (that's if it did have a problem with drugs which i've never heard of before).
I was just feeding back what the owners of the new 'dull and lifeless' FHT have said about it. They have had to bar alot of the 'locals'.....for the drug dealing offences. And yes p*ssheads in pubs are welcome, but not the type who sware non stop and glare at you if you walk within a certain radius of 'their' table....there's drunk and there's drunk.....

Louisa Sweetie,

"Ermm actually not just the castle, in fact for those of us who were around here pre 2000 (probably just me currently) the now apparantly trendy EDT also used to have live Irish music because it was an Irish pub, and even knew the guy who played sunday afternoons in there!"

If you read what people say on the forum you would see that people like Keef are actually from East Dulwich, as are IvemetJimmy, and Mr Piers, Sean MacGabhann, JahLush et al, have lived here for an age. I myself moved to East Dulwich in 1988. Have you ever considered a rabbit? Pets really can have a very soothing influence on the temprament (don't forget the batteries)...

DM

*ahem* so to speak *ahem*

quick quick, back on topic!!

Soo we're agreed Louisa isn't going to be going there anytime soon, but totally entitled to her opinion and choice of venue. I for one won't ever go to the Vale, have I ever mentioned that? ;)

1. I don't think the FHT has a 'gastropub' identity - it just looks and feels like a smartish pub now.

2. Believe me, people were knocking back pints there on Sunday night, not sipping mineral water. just like in "the good old days"!

3. There are different types of music for different vibes. What we did on Sunday was pretty mellow music which yes, some people sat and paid attention to (shock! horror!) - possibly coming to the pub specifically because we were performing - and which others seemed to enjoy as background music while they chatted to their mates. I totally appreciate both types of audience (I can fall into either category myself on a night out), and it was a great mix of both at the FHT. Not all gigs have to be full-on 'knees ups' you know - and the world of music would be very boring if they were!

Yep, Page 2 is a pub in Nunhead. Probably not your kind of place, Louisa - and obviously not a favorite of MadWorld either!

I quite liked Page 2 on the one occasion I went there....

Louisa and DM, there has been talk on the forum of an organic sex... sorry, I mean PET shop.... Good Idea??? ;-)

I am indeed "old skool", and remember all the pubs as they used to be... However, as I lived in Liverpool between 1996 - 2001, I did notice a bit of a change when I got back... That said, I think most of the changes have actually happened in the last 3 or 4 years. Foresters, Magdalla, Inside72 (???)... The EDT had changed in 2001, but has changed several times since!

One that is never mentioned, is The Uplands. Now that was a real back street boozer, and not a particularly nice one from what I remember / what my dad has said. However, in it's last couple of years as a pub, it had a really nice fella running it, and it was a nice place for a pint. Since the refurb, it has been sh!t!!!! Although the French lady (Mairead???) who was there for a while was lovely.

In my opinion, that's the worst change of anywhere in ED.

    • Have been to both pubs in the evenings - whilst fine if there is only a couple of you but  quickly gets full up and noisy. It will be a Friday evening - the only time everyone can make it due to work commitments.  We went to Maria's Tortillas next to the Picture House last time and the food there was great for everyone, although we did not have the 10 and 12 year olds with us that time. I am hoping that the Persian restaurant  opposite Grove Tavern will be opening in the next 3 weeks as this would be ideal.  I tend to stick to fish, chicken and veggie meals.
    • Yes, but only until around 8pm from what i can tell!
    • I like the use of the world real estate, something we don't tend to use this side of the pond unless we are talking large pieces of land.  I understand that real estate does cover individual properties. Perhaps estate agents used to be known as real estate agents.  Let's ask AI Ah, it started when they were involved in selling the estates of the landed gentry, and then moved into the mass property market.
    • The craziest thing is there’s only one session in the morning on weekends now so it’s always MENTAL
