You learn something everyday :---

The Statue in Piccadilli Circus is NOT Eros..

Although the statue is generally known as Eros, it was created as an image of his twin brother, Anteros.

who, as "The God of Selfless Love" was deemed to represent the philanthropic 7th Earl of Shaftesbury suitably.

Because it was on BBC Breakfast TV.

and I then looked it up..

The anniversary of the death of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury KG (28 April 1801 ? 1 October 1885)

He was an English politician, philanthropist and social reformer.

He helped the poor.. The 'Eros' statue was erected in his name.. Shaftsbury Ave.

The mounds in Horniman Triangle Gardens (Sydenham Hill) are in fact mass graves for hundreds of victims of the great plague. The dead were taken far away from the urban sprawl of London out to the then countryside, presumably to prevent spread of the disease.

See you learn something new every day BNG! Just as foxy wanted us to when he set up this thread! I had been under the impression, as had my parents before me and many others locally, that this site was in fact a plague graveyard. Thank you for teaching me something new today.

Really... I am most assured that is incorrect

My fact is that some metal fences outside council properties were made from recycled ww1 stretchers...

The song Do wah diddy was not written my Manfred Mann..

It was written and first performed in 1963 by The Exciters..

The Manfred Mann version lyric.. Do wah diddy diddy, dum diddy do

Was in the original song sheet .. Do wah diddy diddy, down diddy do

    • Naaah, it's rubbish - it would be a change of use so would need planning. https://www.planningdirect.co.uk/planningappeals/affordable-planning-applications/change-of-use/commercial-to-takeaway-change-of-use There's not enough footfall for a McDonalds, anyway, and they're quite picky about their sites
    • So let's never do anything that might improve an area, because it will just be dragged down to the level of what's presently there? Is that what you are saying? I don't have the time or the inclination to do the research, but I'm pretty sure that I have read  that when people who had lived in a very run down area  were given  nice surroundings, they appreciated and looked after them.
