Hi,

I just called JAGs and apparently you can just show up for the classes - it's ?8.50 per class.

This is probably just me but do any other mums-to-be find is slightly annoying how many ante-natal classes assume that the mum-to-be dosn't work. My NCT classes and parentcraft classes are on during the day on weekdays - which makes them difficult for me to attend. The NCT even have a Saturday class "so that partners can attend" - why do they assume that I can make a mid-week class but my husband can't?

I'm hoping to keep working for as long as possible before baby arrives (due in April) and to store up holidays to add to my maternity leave. However I'm finding that between mid-wife appointments and ante-natal classes I'm going to be taking a lot of time off - everyone at work is really nice about it. But I do wonder if anyone knows of classes geared more for mothers-to-be who work full-time and don't want to take too much time off.

(Sorry for the long ranty post!)

sbain

hello - I don't think your colleagues need to be nice about you taking time off - you're legally entitled to paid time off for ante natal care which apparently 'may include relaxation or parent craft classes as well as medical examinations'

The JAGS class is great, btw.

Hi

I attended the legs bums and tums class at Jags on a Monday night from 12 weeks through to 38 weeks when I was pregnant first time round and will be starting them again soon. The instructor Oriane is fantastic - really friendly and great at encouraging everyone to get to know each other . It's nothing too exhausting (although you can choose how hard you push yourself) but you really do feel as if you have had a work out at the end of it and it's great just to get moving! Oriane is also brilliant for answering any questions on antenatal fitness and full of good advice. No need to be a member - you just pay on the day so is very flexible too.

I'm a Jags member and just about to start the Monday class, haven't tried it yet but I've heard it's good. The monthly membership is really cheap so might work out less expensive than paying for each class. There is also a nice pool and other yoga classes as well, the teachers do cater for pregnant ladies and modify the movements for you. If you would rather go during the day Jags is not so good though, as it's used by the school during daytime. Maybe see you there next Monday :)

Sbain - totally agree! I'm freelance so don't even get the paid time off for appointments but luckily my Brierley midwife works weekends. Managed to get on to the evening NCT class although I'm cutting it fine as the last class is 3 days before my due date! Have never heard of parentcraft classes though - what are they?

I too did the Monday JAGS class with Oriane from 16 weeks to 36 weeks - thought it was brilliant and felt fit all the way through my pregnancy...my baby is now 10 weeks old and I am not far off my previous weight which I think has alot to do with the class.

Good luck!

Hi sbain, I've already read your lost iphone post about taking that tumble on North Cross Rd - and now I realise you're pregnant. Hope you're OK. I have baby no 2 due in April too and have been tiptoeing around everywhere and staying at home (when work allows) because I'm so worried about slipping. Anyway, I have heard good reports of that JAGS class too, but if you want something more gentle, there are a couple of yoga classes around... Try Health Matters and Soup Dragon.

Hi Sandy_Rose,

The parentcraft classes are free classes for parents to be on at Dulwich hospital - my midwife suggested them to me and gave me a form to fill in - for questions about the classes it says to phone Sandra on 020 3299 9000. I haven't attended mine yet so not sure whether they are good or not - but I think any opportunity to meet local women who are due around the same time as me is a good idea.

Hi Edanna - yeah I was really shaken when I fell to be honest - no harm done but it is really disconcerting - I'm 26 weeks now and seem to have developed extreme pregnancy clumsiness (tbh I'm pretty clumsy at the best of times so being you can imagine how bad I am with a bump). Hopefully the weather will return to some semblance of normality soon.

    • OMFG is it possible for the council to do anything without a bunch of armchair experts moaning about it? The library refurb is great news, as it's lovely but completely shagged out - the toilets don't even work reliably. Other libraries in the area will be open longer house during the closure. July is a rubbish time to begin a refurb because it's just before the entire construction sector goes on summer holiday, and it would mean delaying the work another 8 months.

    • Second time Aria has completed a plumbing job for me and both times he’s been polite. Communicative, kept to time and completed the job. He’s very helpful and tidy as well. First job was ball valve in water tank, not easy at all. He and his team were fantastic. This time kitchen tap cylinders replaced and tap tightened.  Much appreciated, Aria thank you.
    • Thought others may be interested to help a local community centre help others.    My bank account offers roundup and it’s been growing all year. As well as treating myself or putting it towards a train ticket to see my family I’ve made a donation to the Albrighton. They can use donations at any time but I hope my donation will go towards the Christmas hampers.    Can you support them so they can provide Christmas hampers?   https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/albrightoncommunityfridge?utm_id=1&utm_term=M22JKQb6W   A donation of £50 will pay for a hamper to feed a family over this Christmas period. A donation of £30 will pay for a hamper to feed someone living on their own over the Christmas period.
