The 124 Lordship Lane eyesore

Recommended Posts

Dear Owner of the shop front infecting the space between William Rose Butchers and His Lordship Launderette on Lordship Lane - this is an eyesore. At least get rid of the trashed awning.

Southwark Council! - is there anything to be done?

Does anyone know the story behind this prime piece of retail space?

It's been discussed on the forum a few times. People have posted that an elderly lady lives or lived there, and has done for most of her life and doesn't want to move. There was also a fire which damaged the shop a while back. No idea what the current position is, but it's a bit more complicated than you might think. And involves/involved a real person - so using words like "infecting" seems a bit out of proportion.

Agreed.

And the borough we live in is Southwark, despite its strange pronunciation :)

I like it personally, the blackness, the fly posters and the awning. Though im my heart i'm torn between this and the chinese chipshop behind the old Police station

Though this prime location you speak of would be ideal for a Pop-Up cup cake store

When the current owner is dead enough, i'm sure you'll get first dibs

"Infecting"!

I completely agree with Siduhe.

As far as I can remember an elderly person lived at that address and has done for many years...it's her home and she's entitled to live how she wants to live after all these year as she's certainly been in the area a lot longer than others.

AArrh the old Chinese Chip Shop.. I remember it well.

The bare light bulb in the flat above would indicate someone lives here too.

Okay everyone - perhaps the word infecting is too harsh. It wasn't meant as a personal dig to the owner. What about the actual issue?

And I take issue with assuming that because the owner is an elderly lady, she is somehow incompetent. This is sexist and ageist. Does she need help? If so, that's an important issue to be address as well.

If you close one eye it will appear half as bad.

I quite like it. It's a reminder of what quite a few of the shop fronts at this end of Lordship Lane used to be like. You only have to go a little way up the hill to see one or two similar examples.

Anyway, it's really not worth getting excited about, at least nowhere near as excited as Ms Blueberry appears to be. No doubt this 'prime piece of retail space' will eventually hit the commercial property market. After all, it's only gaining in value. And perhaps, who knows, it may even become the long awaited Waitrose, albeit a very little one.

I also suspect the kind of 'help' hinted at may not be what the said elderly lady is looking for or needs. Like many very elderly people, she may just wish to see out her days in her home of many years and in familiar surroundings, without being forced to conform and smarten up their property which could possibly be at great expense beyond their current means.

It's not derelict.

It doesn't seem to be negatively affecting anything around it judging by the queues outside William Rose.

Perhaps she can't afford to smarten it up-Is it actually causing you any harm looking like that? I think not-there are disused shopfronts like that on most London Local high streets.

I'm fuming that you (who probably wouldn't have pissed on this entire area if it was on fire before the gentrification started) have the audacity to fume on about a shabby shop front when all around families and pensioners are resorting to food banks. I'd rather the shop looked like that than got turned into a smug nappy valley vendor selling S**t that no one really wants " oh look! a mug with Peckham on it! a tea cosy covered in Owls! How lovely" ugh!

Rant over.

That's a bit unfair New Wave.

When it comes to 'a mug with Peckham on it! or a tea cosy covered in Owls!

one of my favourite shops on Lordship Lane is Lush Designs .

After all I got my Foxy Tea Towels and Foxy Mug there.

Foxy.

I've privately been made aware of the situation and it's not as innocent as a nice little old lady exercising her 'live and let live' rights.

It's about another person trying to making as much money as possible at the expense of the community, your community.

However, there's nothing to be done here. So enjoy 124 in its current state while it lasts.

    • Hey there,   This is Suzanne from The Neighbourhood Vet.   I am writing on this forum - as a first and last time - to ask people to think about the level of criticism of vets that’s happening, especially recently, and ask if you think is really ok?    I established the practice 12 years ago with Amber and we joined a corporate called IVC Evidensia in 2019. Amber went back to Australia and Simon joined me as co-Clinical Director in 2020. We now have 70 employees across 3 sites and I think we have a pretty amazing and special practice.    The upset caused by the criticism of vet practices is not just about The Neighbourhood Vet and our staff. We get equally affected when we hear people saying bad things about Ms Robson’s practice, DNA pet care practices (Peckham/ Mayow Rd/ Parish Lane/ Streatham etc), Medivet practices (Lordship Lane, Camberwell, New Cross, Beckenham etc) or other IVC practices (Norwood Rd, Paxtons, Easipetcare).    All vet practices are a business and have to make a profit otherwise they will not survive. Just because we happen to be a place that cares for your pets, it doesn’t mean we can do this for free. Not a single person I know who works in the vet profession, chose to do so for the money, rather it is because we love animals, and continue to do our best for them every day, even whilst hearing the most terrible things said about us.   I personally have been criticised for selling to a corporate rather than staying independent but until you have dealt with the pressure (financial and otherwise) of running a business that cares for pets (which seems to be the most emotive topic for people) then I’d ask you be respectful of my decision.  The corporate practices are the obvious target in any criticism of vet practices - we do not always get things right, and there is always room for improvement but we are all working for the common goal which is to look after your pets.   None of our vets work on commission or get any performance-based bonus. None of our staff have financial targets that they are expected to achieve.  Different practices do different things and charge differently as do other businesses that provide similar services - think M&S vs Sainsbury’s vs Lidl vs a corner shop vs Waitrose. You do not expect to pay the same at these places so I am not sure why people think that vets should price-match and all charge exactly the same?    If you decide that you are not happy with something (our staff/ practices/ cost of medication/ receptionists/ cost of prescriptions/ way of working/ vets etc etc etc), then we would encourage you to discuss this with us. On any given day we can have a multitude of complaints from prescription charges to having to wait for 10 minutes because of an emergency to our consult prices on a weekend to the receptionist not being sufficiently friendly, and this all takes time away from caring for you and your pet.  If you genuinely think it will make you feel better to write something bad or that you are providing a service to others with your criticism, then of course you can do that, but please refrain from spreading inaccurate information or making bold assumptions about our Vets and staff.    We do not respond on socials because do not want to give air to toxicity, however, most of our staff (and others in the vet profession) would know about the things written about them. Vets have the highest suicide rate of any profession and the mental health of many in the vet profession is easily eroded by social media. So before you feel the need to tear someone down, perhaps think instead that it might be better to be kind. It would make the world a much nicer place.      Suzanne   Dr Suzanne McNabb BSc BVSc MACVSc MSc MVS MRCVS She/Her Clinical Director The Neighbourhood Vet 66 Lordship Lane East Dulwich SE22 8HJ
    • Thanks for the recommendations. I've not been there, but will give it a go

    • Sadiq Khan has pledged to help make London the "best city in the world to grow up in". Mr Khan said he plans to: Provide free skills training for unemployed or low-income Londoners Create more than 150,000 new jobs by 2028 Fund more youth clubs with a £30m investment Make free school meals permanent in London's state primary schools Keep Transport for London fares frozen until at least 2025 and never introduce a pay-per-mile road charging scheme End rough sleeping by 2030 with government support  Build 40,000 new council homes by 2030 and to build new "rent control" homes  On policing, he said he wants to put 1,300 more police on the streets, tackle violence against women and girls and deliver free legal support for victims. He also promises a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2030 and to clean up the Thames, planning to make it swimmable within 10 years. Source BBC News - Sadiq Khan pledges to help make London the 'best city in the world' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-68968813   All great pledges but so many questions.  1. Where will the extra money come from to deliver all this ?  2. In times when police are leaving in ever decreasing numbers and recruitment is hard, how will he put more police on the streets ?  3. Rough sleeping, no matter what is done, some still choose that way of life, so what's his plan in that case ?  4. How will he directly create new jobs ?  A lot of political hot air and personally I want to revisit what he actually achieves in 4 years to see if there was a justification in a third term.
