Its that time of year again, past Christmas day and late delayed cards are turning up.

How late are your cards arriving ?

Last year I had one delivered 4 weeks late.

Can that be beaten this year ?

I came across this the other day.  Probably the closest I personally ever came to one like this was my first office party in my first job.  Not sure that many are like this anymore.

I’m not sure how many other people have experienced this; but both me and one of my friends have the same story.

Around Crawthew Grove and Crystal Palace Road: I was followed by a large fox right on my heel. At first I didn’t notice because I had my headphones on, but then I noticed my shadow had an extra lump in it, funnily enough, it was a fox, very very close to my feet. Even if I sped up walking it just tried to get closer - it was quite frightening actually, it was quite clear that it wanted to nip me. I didn’t know what to do so, I started to reprimand the fox and walked slowly away from it, facing it - which it didn’t seem to like and backed off a bit. I then proceeded to speed-walk away.

Quite frankly, the whole situation was quite embarrassing and a little bit frightful as I’d never had a fox even come up to me. I’ve heard of particularly curious foxes that might come up to someone who beckons them, and maybe even bite that person, but I’ve never heard of a fox chasing someone. The amount of confidence that it had was incredible.

When it happened, I was on the way to see some friends, and once I had told one of them, she told me the same thing happened to her.

if anyone else knows anything about this bitey fox then let me know!

Inpost "Parcel was refused" at Barry's - anyone else?
Over the last week or so I've had the tracking info on a succession of Vinted / InPost parcels show "Parcel was refused" at Barry's Food Store. InPost initially said it was an issue with the store, but I visited the store and they said there was no issue, and they had received InPost parcels that day - I'll also highlight that I've never had a problem with picking up parcels there, which is why I always use them.

I've contacted InPost three times now as I have four parcels which are apparently making a daily trip from a depot in Dartford and then back again after another "refusal". They just say they'll contact the depot, raise an investigation, etc etc etc and that I have to contact Vinted to get them to chase it up, which is basically impossible because Vinted have zero customer service.

Just wondering if I'm the only one with this issue, or is it a wider problem?

Hi all, I was wondering why we don’t have Christmas lights on Lordship lane? Down to forest hill, there are a couple. Any reason why we don’t? It would really change the atmosphere in these gloomy days.

I understand from Pao that they are taking a short break but will be re-opening on Tuesday 25th November and also that there will be a sign in the window tomorrow, by way of confirmation.

Meanwhile, greatly  missed!

Planning application for BT Street Hub on LL - unnecessary at best.
Whilst reading about what was Poundland, I saw that BT has applied to install (block the pavement with) one of its large screen advertising 'street hubs' outside the building. This seems like a terrible idea in my opinion - others may disagree - but you might want to look at the planning application and comment. There is still a day or two to do so.

Here's the relevant application 25/AP/2825 https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=T3G4H5KBH1500 and how it will look https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/files/BDF327FA0103A31946387A251B9C9D45/pdf/25_AP_2825-ELEVATION_PLAN-4143504.pdf

Absolutely gutted to hear that Dell Autos in Hansler Road is closing tomorrow.

They have MOTed my ancient 1998 Micra for years, and have always been brilliant.

Wishing them all the best of luck in their retirement.

Wishing all their customers (including me) luck in finding another garage as honest, helpful, efficient and friendly as they were.

Licensing application for 2026 has gone in and they want to extend the event from 4 to 7 days accross two weekends.

There are some proposed significant changes to be aware of:

Event proposal moves to two separate weekends

Number of days of the festival moves from 4 to 7 meaning also a change in the original licence is required

Expected footfall in the park over the two weekends around 60,000.

And just to add that councillor Renata Hamvas chairs the licensing committee. Worth contacting her with views on ammendments to the original license. I am fairly sure she won't grant any amendments, but just in case.....

Just a short silly one among more prosaic or gloomy posts: libraries are brilliant and we are lucky to have them!

I popped into Dulwich Library this afternoon. It was pretty busy and I'd guess there were probably 40-50 people in, plus however many in the kids' section. All sorts of people were borrowing books, getting their blood pressure checked on the machine, printing documents, using computers, getting out the house and off the street, reading the papers and reference books, whatever. Oldies, kids, students and everyone in between. At exam time, it's a safe space rammed with kids studying.

It's an elegant building, the staff always seem to be doing their best despite the obvious money challenges, it's open late most days, and all for £0 at point of use. We are all very lucky to have access to Dulwich Library and the other libraries! 👏👏👏

It’s been a long time since my last gardening tips, I’ve been away running my Retreats in Beautiful Kefalonia & I’ve been ill. But all ok now

Well we’ve had a beautiful summer & by the looks of the fabulous colours, we’re in for a spectacular Autumn 🍂

Well, if you look after your gardens properly!

So, off we go. Are you all paying attention, then we’ll begin;

1 PRUNING

Cut back Buddlejas by at least half, they will grow back with abundance

Prune Raspberries back to 6’’ off the ground, prune all fruit trees so the air circulates in the centre of the tree, ensuring the cuts face downward or you treat them with tree paint to avoid disease getting in . Cut espalier trees so all forward & rear facing branches are cut & all side branches are tied in

Roses . Cut back all shrub Roses back hard to a bud & with climbers cut all long branches back to the main body of the plant , cutting all dead branches out completely. Take off all leaves with black spot & collect all the leaves off the ground as they are a fungus & just circulate back through the earth

Cut back perennials in your borders & cut in half any overgrown herbaceous plants . Free plants 😃

Planting

Plant new bulbs for early Spring colours like Daffodils Tulips Hyacinths Aliums & plant colourful Cyclamen with some feed throughout the season . Hellebores or Christmas roses add beautiful colours in shaded areas of your garden & are a good perennial for all gardens .

Most colourful to plant & keep out burglars are Pyracanthas this year. They are spectacular this year & add colour as well as safety

It’s always good to plant fruit trees, trees & shrubs at this time of year. You are welcome to visit the trade nursery I use with me to help you choose quality plants & trees & a little discount

Tidying up

Yes, it’s that old subject again! Leaves need to be cleaned off lawns throughout Autumn & Winter. Trees are very clever in that they gather all the toxins from the air put them in the leaves & drop them down to prevent rivals from growing under them including Your Lawns !! So you have to clear them . Sorry But you can leave them on your borders. They break down & give compost to your plants

Dig out & pull all weeds you can, they won’t seed & spread them so they come back in Spring

Thats it for now. I have two days this week & three next week if you would like any advice maintenance or plants My Son Oli does the Landscaping Get in contact with him on 07549418219 or me Nigel on 07759862191

Please remember to use the other well recommended gardeners on this site

HAPPY GARDENING

By chance II saw the band Truthpaste filming this whilst walking early in 2024, and was reminded when Mark Riley played the track the other night on Six Music

Wood Vale is pretty obvious, Netherby and Canonbie, One Tree Hill? Peckham Rye?

This is very sad. The coffee shop replaced a dingy yard where a couple of cars were parked, and it's a nice little spot to sit and have a coffee. Hopefully Stephanie the owner can continue to get the support of local punters and can find a way to secure the space.
