At last some sense re the smoking ban in Britain
Keef replied to LizzygotDizzy's topic in The Lounge
lozzyloz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The current ban on smoking in buildings means empty bars. Rubbish. That would mean that only smokers drink. Go to any pub/bar in ED on a Friday night and see how empty they are. Well OK the CPT.Well you are talking about bars on a busy London Street, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of pubs around the country were a bit empty. And why is everyone picking on the poor CPT this month, talk about kick a place when it's down. > Smokers go outside in the cold, and often the non-smokers join them rather than be left behind. I have smoking friends but I dont go outside with them. Also I find a lot of smokers smoke less and stay in the pub and be more sociable rather than standing in the wet and cold.I have been outside places for a smoke and found quite big groups out there because a couple of them smoke. > I believe that I have a right to fresh air, and that smokers have a right to smoke. Agreed. Agreed too > In a mature society, we have to find the best balance between those rights. AgreedAlso agreed > One obvious solution would be to ensure that in all but the smallest catering and leisure facilities, there are clearly-marked smoking and non-smoking zones. So by enforcing this wouldn't it be a nanny state intervention? Who covers the cost of maintaining the smoke free zone stays smoke free?I don't think we should ensure anything, I think each venue should get a choice, simple as that. I think a large amount of pubs would stay smoke free, and some wouldn't. Either way we'd all have somewhere to go and keep happy. > Most pubs have more than one bar. Why not a non-smoking lounge and a smoking snug? Why not if the space permits?Quite. > The balance has tipped so far against the smoker that it becomes a real issue of freedom. What about the freedom of children, pregnant women, workers and other non smokers? Their health doesn't have to be harmed just because a smoker wants to damage themselvesWhat about them? He has already said that there should be seperate areas for smokers, so in keeping with his arguements this wouldn't be an isse... Besides, we all know kids shouldn't be in pubs! >:D I believe that government is right to ensure that the facts about smoking, and the harm it can cause, are well known and after that they should back off and leave us alone. Why don't we apply the same rules to Paedophiles, drunk drivers, racists etc. What bollocks.I'm sorry but not one of those is genuinely comparable. Not setting out to disagree with all that you say Loz, I think the whole nanny state thing is bo!!ocks, it's just too easy and simplistic an arguement. However, some of your arguements, especially the last one just had to be replied to in their own right. -
But it turns out to be Friday 13th and you get hacked to death by a man in a hocky mask. I wish I could have a holiday.

But then you lose all the feeling in your body and don't realise that you are on fire. I wish the CPT could get a nice new owner who would keep it as pubbish as possible, but make some improvements.

Glad we can all agree on something, he may be a good player (it pains me to say), but he's not too bright, and is no captain. I'm a believer in running it from midfield, and unsurprisingly Gerrard gets my vote every time. However, if not him, then I'd be looking towards Gareth Barry, or possibly Owen Hargreaves... Guess we'll have to see what the new manager will do... I really really hope he has the bottle to keep Lampard on the bench and use him as a possible goal scoring sub, or to replace Gerrard should the need arise. Barry and Gerrard have been the most convincing midfield pair of recent years by a mile.

Dark end of the street - Commitments. . . Can't remember the original artist. Great song though

Good for them, I used to love it when you'd get roast potatoes on the bar on a Sunday and stuff like that. However, if someone were to be nasty enough to report them, I'm sure they would be told to stop.

Firstly I think he'd do a better job, and secondly, I would love to see Terry lose it the cocky tw@t! As for Ferguson suggesting Ferdinand.... WTF?!?!?

No idea what this is, Fear N' Boozin asked me to post it.

My best man did a half hour long "game show" doing 3 rounds including a "what happened next", "Photo captions" and "who's line is it anyway" round. He had 4 other good friends as the 2 teams. He was great, but it was a lot of work, and he couldn't have done it without the others. It has gone down as one of the highlights of the day though, everyone remembers it!

Then surely Adams who, Campbell who?

Agree about the bombed out church, quite a sight! The Pump House on the Albert Dock is a lovely place for a couple of pints.

Thing is, it's not just a lick of paint that's needed, there is structural work needed, and if anyone wanted to do food, they'd have to build a kitchen outback, or convert upstairs to a working kitchen. A friend of mine had a little pub in West Norwood, and started putting out free pub grub on the bar for the punters and selling toasties and stuff. Everyone loved it, until some disgruntled customer she'd barred grassed her to health and safety, who threatened her with closure because she was cooking in her own kitchen upstairs. You make an effort and it comes back to bite you in the arse. The current staff at the CPT try their best to make people welcome and get stuff happening, but with no support. Myself and a friend have played loads of nights (for nothing) there in an attempt to bring in a few people for them, not because we give a shit about the leaseholder, but because the actual staff who are there everyday are great, and they have to listen to people having a go at them for the state of the place and the price of the beer. Ant we must have posted at similar times, but yep, the kitchen thing is an issue, there is no way they could just start serving grub now.

Don't spend enough? How much more do I need to spend??? Agree the Mag has great screens, but they turn the volume up so high, I couldn't stand it during the rugby on Saturday, I was raising my voice to the guy right next to me and that is wrong for a pub.

I've only done this once and was nervous. I just wrote a few bullet points thinking they'd last me a good few minutes, but having spoken for about a minute I looked at my paper only to realise I'd covered everything. After that though I just relaxed and talked about my friend. I did finish with a joke that I'd heard elsewhere that brought the house down... Tell bride to put her hand on the table, tell groom to put his hand on hers. Tell bride to remember this forever, and that he will always be there for her and that sort of shit. Tell groom to remember this forever as it's the last time he'll ever have the upper hand! >:D<

Innit you tease! Personally I think anyone should post what they want, for everyone who then has a go at them there will most likely be at least equal numbers who will quick up for them. That said, if it's as bad as all that, there are many many more appropriate places to turn to. Best of luck anyway.

At last some sense re the smoking ban in Britain

The ban has become a total git in this cold weather, and like Jah said, it has made me enjoy the pub less. I hate smoke near food, but with beer I have to smoke! Thing is, last week I was having an after hours smoke in a pub, and it was great to be sat at a bar with a ciggie going. I don't want to cause anyone else to get ill with my smoke, but don't give me this bo!!ocks about your clothes smelling the next morning. If you don't change your shirt each day you are a pikey. -
Religious or not, the cathedrals are both worth looking at. The CoE one is the biggest in Britain, and I think it's one of the largest in Europe. The catholic one ("Paddy's Wigwam") is an incredible building, and beautiful inside. The 2 cathedrals are at either end of Hope Street. Other than that, Anna has mentioned the major placs to go... Although I'd give the Beatles thing a miss if I were you.

are film composers the modern equivilent of say a Mozart or a Beethoven?

andycam Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > How can you call Gladiator a bad film Keef? Are you mad? > > Last of the Mohicans soundtrack was by Trevor Jones and is rather cool. The film was on tv the other night. isn't daniel Day Lewis the most versitle and solid actor working today (never the same). Sorry, but don't think Gladiator is anyhting to write home about. Daniel Day-Lewis is indeed a fine actor, and I love LOTM. I also had a mad crush on Johdi May (Alice) when I first saw it as a teenager. Saw her on stage a year or 2 ago and she was fab. Funnily enough, I was doing some training today, and I used the finale to LOTM to demonstrate how much a blind/visually impaired person will miss without audio description. Imagine watching the whole film and following the story, then it all ends with a 6 minute sequence of them running up mountains and jumping off them and sword fighting, all of which happens to music... You wouldn't have a clue what was going on! 2 soundtracks (not scores) that I really like are Cruel Intentions, and Baz Lurman's Romeo+Juliet (which actually has a nice score as well).
