  1. Chicken and egg indeed. Over a dozen car bombs have been defused over the last 5 months and splinter republicans seem determined to kill a policeman. This isn't bringing back the SAS kill squads, it's a couple of advisors on intelligence gathering matters. I was profoundly depressed listening to the radio yesterday to hear how bad things had got over the last year or so. It reminds me of ETA, of who's activities you could understand under Franco, but when the Basque country is wealthy, successful, vibrant, has almost complete autonomy, it's own education, it's own taxes, the violence is really only the selfish, nihilist luxury of antediluvian cunts frankly. Does the police chief's actions send the wrong message? Absolutely. Is he trying to keep his people alive in the face of many attempts on their lives, seems like it to me.
  2. I'll try and make this one. I'm strangely partial to the lodge despite everything
  3. I'm inclined to agree pk. It's not unlike Jehova's witnesses who'd rather die than have a blood transfusion. Religious rules aren't there to be broken by pathetic little things like compassion, humanity or logic, they are hard and fast things that result in heaven or hell. Seen from that point of view it's we heathens who are stupid and doomed, and the archibishop who's trying to prevent more souls condemned to hell in future. Can't have your cake and eat it you know. Mind you fucking stupid cunts!!!!!!
  4. I know quite a few Portuguese people, and most of them think hes a complete twonk. Noone can deny his obvious and very great talent, and lets face it, most successful people don't get there by being nice. I still want to smack him every time he does that incredulous (what me dive, hack, not a penalty etc etc?) look though.
  5. High potency, I like that. As 30M is the equivalent for 1 part active ingredient to every single hydrogen atom in the galaxy, it doesn't take much to be a bit more concentrated.
  6. Excellent advice, much indebted to you *Bob*. See it wasn't a wholly terrible idea :-/
  7. Thanks for your help everyone. Right, I'm trying to write a romantic ditty with my own fair pen to get some violinists to play at my wife's romantic birthday dinner. Should I go with a minor scale for that romantic/melancholic intimacy or go with the majors for that get up and go celebratory tone of which she's so beloved? Also should I learn how to play/write music too?
  8. OK, got it. In my first post it's calculating (ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) % 100) + 1 against each row in the CTE, thus you will get as many (or as few) returned rows as you get coincidental matches between the (ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) % 100) + 1 and the ROW_NUMBER. Interesting I always thought the where clause was considered a static value applied to each row, not a row level value applied to each row. Hmm beware of any getdate() type stuff on a long running query I reckon. One for the memory banks.
  9. oookayyyyy so can anyone tell me why, in SQL server, when trying to randomly get the Nth row from a table with [pre] WITH sentence AS (SELECT stuff, row = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Id) FROM SentenceType ) SELECT sen.stuff FROM sentence sen WHERE sen.row = (ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) % 100) + 1 --random 1-100 this aint cryptography [/pre] and [pre] DECLARE @row INT SET @row = (ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) % 100) + 1 --random 1-100 this aint cryptography ;WITH sentence AS (SELECT stuff, row = ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Id) FROM SentenceType ) SELECT sen.stuff FROM sentence sen WHERE sen.row = @row [/pre] they behave so very, very differently with the former utterly barmy and the latter working fine (but not how I want to do this)?
  10. quite quite. Although Quadrophenia was good.
  11. Ok, figured it's a chance to get EDF on the google knowledge base map. For the most part in my job (IT development) I can just google a class or error and get a wealth of useful information. But recently I've started upgrading stuff to reporting services 2008, SQL 2008 and I'm getting an average of no hits and no information, clearly I'm the only one doing this or no one can get anything to work and talk about it. Yaw yawn etc. Anyway, I figured we have thousands of intelligent people working in all sorts of professions and we might be a good resource to help each other in times of need, and mayhap a room to share this stuff might (or might not, fine fine, let it sink out of sight) be a good idea. So when in need...is there a legal precedence for...how can I use linq to...dovetail joint the wrong way of going about...should I use butter or is a water based lube... etc this is the place to ask.
  12. It was a bit rubbish, but I was most wowed by it at the cinema aged 10 or what ever I was.
  13. Just search for the term and you'll get 20000 hits on this forum. For the most part you're preaching to the converted.
  14. I remember when Dune was made into a film, it was apparently 8 and a half hours long, almost 6 hours of which ended up on the cutting room floor, and it basically made absolutely no sense at all (and eventually got made (completely anew, not with that material) into a mini-series (of dubious quality, with a really fit Princess Irulan as I recall)) and Frank Herbert expressed some wish that there might be a way to release it as a long film/mini series. This was about 15 years before DVDs existed, so no reason why there wouldn't be a full length Watchmen if that much was cut, the LoTR people did it.
  15. What's elbow lifting btw? Is it like the chicken or heavy shopping dances?
  16. I'm no Fidei Defensor, far from it in fact, but isn't paedophile scum a little harsh? Be interesting to see how the ecclesiastical authorities react to this. They got it woefully wrong on that Bishop in Argentina, let's see if the arch-conservative pope wassisname can feck it up again. Here's hoping.
  17. Ooh, reindeer carpaccio was pretty fantastic in Helsinki, highly recommended. As was slow braised reindeer shank. And yeah, donner doesn't really bear scrutiny does it.
  18. And they say football's unsophisticated ?!?!
  19. mmmm, horse pizza in the tyrol. I'm fairly certain it did.
  20. Will they have a little film within the film, like the comic within the comic, reflecting the main themes in a dark and twisted fashion?
  21. The Catholic church views homosexuality as an affliction from which you should be cured, but it's not proscribed as such.
  22. Show off ;-P I have to say from the screenshots and trailers it seems to have got the look, but then we know Snyder can do visuals. If anything a little too polished? It is supposed to be a rotten and gritty world. but as Brendan says, definite trepidation, but not a little excitement. Booked in to see it at the Imax, so have to wait a week.
  23. Yeah, I noticed this last night. I don't think I've ever seen such a rapid and severe onset of forumitis before Xena!!
  24. a.k.a. exclusive wabsnasm
  25. There's no in crowd. poppycock. Though I would add, are we meeting for lunch tomorrow?
