The Best Bar in East Dulwich 2007 award - discussion
mockney piers replied to Mark's topic in The Lounge
LOL.I know what you mean, I think they're all Excellent Down There. -
This is such a ridiculously over repeated and unneccessarily fractious thread topic. In short it's like telly. If you don't like reality tv, don't watch it when it's on. If you're strangely in the mood for repeats of Dempsey and Makepeace then slap on a bit of uk gold for half an hour. We all know what places and what times are prone to lots of bugaboos, and which ones aren't. Something for everyone in this fair townlet and environs of ours.

East Dulwich Forum for kids?
mockney piers replied to madmanhoagy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree bob, just be on this forum as you are madmanhoagy (assuming you really ARE 11), I for one would be interested in what you have to say. For instance, how do you feel about being forced to sit in a pub garden with blimmin' adults everywhere, just because your parents fancy a pint on a sunday afternoon? -

I think an emoticon per sentence count is often indicative ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) But seriously, misrepresentation is just what happens in 'cyberspace'. When I told a mate of mine who'd been flirting with a girl on an MMORPG that said girl was a bloke, he couldn't bring himself to play for a couple of weeks he was so appalled. But he learned his lesson there and then. An no, it wasn't 'a mate' ;-P -
"the vale hasnt charged on the door for the last 4 years lets get the facts straight" Well that's not true for starters is it. The were quite happy to take a fiver each off a good dozen or more of us in July 2005 at then end of a wedding blessing celebration and then throw us all out 10 minutes and a pricey round later, no refund, for a completely baseless suspicion of alleged white stuff naughtiness, so no, they get no break from me. Maybe a full refund and a public apology, that single act we reckon has cost him an absolute minimum of 10 grand turnover, so 150 odd quid would go a long way.

Weekend nightime demographics/behaviour in ED (Lounged)
mockney piers replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in The Lounge
"Italy, France and Spain ... it is perceived to be terribly 'uncool' be to drunk rather than 'clever'" I can't really speak for France, in Italy I have noticed people like to nurse a glass of wine or campari all night but the main square in Verona is probably not representative of a huge cross section of Italian society; but I can definitely speak for Spain and can say that drunkenness is as highly prized there as it is here amongst the younger generation (30ish and down) as it is here. And Madrid has some pretty serious issues with violence too, it's had a healthy knife culture for a lot longer than this place has. -

"Were there not regular punch-ups in the ED boozeries of old anyway? Or were they good old-fashioned rose-tinted punch-ups as opposed to the new breed of Moet-quaffing, Bugaboo-style punch-ups?" I might have to nominate this for the quote of the week competition. -

"don't the pubs have an obligation as part of their licence to stop serving the severely pissed?" Yes they do, but as Snorky suggested, there's a big financial incentive in not doing so. As it goes the Black Cherry has suggested I might want to sleep it off once or twice and advice was duly followed. -

I think they were designed to curb the hangovers rather than the bad behaviour, but point taken, if not quite accepted. Times move on and I really do think we can have a different approach to going out in this country, but as you say, the shouty argumentative piss artists will ever remain. -
Well if you're going to invoke precedent I might get myself some nice hungry lions, any one help with building an amphitheatre?
-
Yep, Mr & Mr Broad Shoulders Rugger Tw@ts standing at the front may well be the least popular people in East Dulwich at the moment, for any one who was at the EDT methinks. And yes, hats off to AlMurray for having turned around sports watching at the EDT in recent days. Not to mention the Hot Dog stand!!

mockney piers replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in The Lounge
Maybe one day they will. We all grew up with the pubs-shut-at-11-quick-lets-get-tanked mentality. Best thing that happened to this country was the change in licensing laws, however I think it'll take a long time for the old mentality to ebb away, perhaps another generation. In fact I see the necking it mentality less than I did, though we still have a tendency to stay in pubs until throwing out time / spilling our beer on the floor, whether we're enjoying ourselves or not. Will a change in binge-drinking behaviour alter the likelihood of what Snorky describes? I doubt it sadly; I think booze and violence is inextricably linked in many people's idea of a night out. I witness it damn near every time I go back to Hitchin to visit old friends in the small town mentality there (it's amazing how much violence and threat of it was a pervasive facet of my youth, I forget sometimes) and what Snorks describes here is hardly surprising if a bit depressing. I know Clapham pretty well and Hoxton very well, and they're not nearly as bad as is being suggested. I hope these sorts of incidents remain pretty isolated on LL, and perhaps a higher police presence at midnightish may be desired, but god knows the Met in Southwark have bigger concerns than occasional thuggery in East Dulwich, as horrible as that thuggery (re the other thread) can certainly prove to be. -
Yeah, the place I mentioned (on east dulwich grove) remained empty for ages, but it now appears to be occupied. I dread to think what they paid!!

Ask them who sang "It's Raining Men". If they answer Geri Halliwell they're can register for the kids forum. Hmmm, rather given the game away now haven't I. -

I can't see him winning.Every interview I've seen him give since his campaign kicked off has been terrible. The one on the Today programme last weekish was positively painful to listen to. He has no idea what he wants to do or even really why he's standing, other than his etonian chums realise he's their only chance of success. He's a nice guy for sure and I'm deeply ambivalent about Ken, but I think you have to be more than a loveable bumbling fool to get the job done, surely? -
Next Forum Drinks - Friday 12th October at the George Canning

Took it easy yesterday, so juuust about managed to recover from the excesses of friday and saturday. Quiet weekend next one I think ..... Doh!!!! -
Yeah, the missus and I lived for about 4 months in a place that ostensibly seemed a great flat, and for 3 weeks it was. Then the family who lived upstairs returned and life became hellish. There was absolutely no soundproofing between the floors and every single step thundered down from above. Add into the mix two young children who loved running about upstairs, and it was really no joy. We were going through a really rocky patch in our relationship at the time, and it wasn't until we moved out (the landlord was having the flat repossessed by the bank, he was a dodgy operator at every level) into a place with peace and quiet, and we finally started getting good nights' sleep that we realised how much it had affected our lives, and came damn near to breaking us up. For the record, we never blamed the family, they were lovely and nothing they could do, but I never want to live through that again, it was like chinese water torture!!
