  2. I haven't tried driving as they are still slippy, some much worse than others. Managed to walk though without falling. But cars are moving around slowly in the Adys, Nutbrook, Anstey, Fenwick, Nigel Roads area.
  3. whichever agency it is who is responsible needs to be exposed as being seriously deficient at the very least in communicating with the public. This disruption has been going on for weeks. Is there no system for reporting all road works to some central place in the Council? if not, surely there should be? 4. This is ridiculous. And not even telling anyone what they are doing. The traffic is frequently nose to tail right up into Grove Vale because of this. I have alerted the local press. Hopefully they will pursue TfL and expose their unaccountability, hopeless communications and bad planning. 5. I grew up in the North East. We had lots of snow every winter and all households cleared the paths outside their house. We never had councils doing it (or failing to do it). All the years I have lived here I have often felt sad that the practice seems to have been lost as I did it for my own front paths and no one else followed. The best time to do it if you are able to is as soon as the snow is an inch or so deep before it is walked on a lot, even if still smowing. It can be brushed away. But the garden spade is fine even after the snow has been walked on and it has hardened. I had not heard about the alleged legal liability until on this thread. Hope this can be cleared up soon. We have to find a way to get us all back to be more self reliant again instead of forever wanting Them to do something and then moaning that government is too big, useless etc etc.
  6. Hi suzyq - I am surprised you didn't hear about this before as you live in the road. There should have been a thorough consultation process. It would be a good idea to email your ward councillors to ask them how it was all handled so at least you could register your concern and find out how you didn't hear and what the flaws in the process were. Your councillors are: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] I live not far away and I haven't heard anything about this either. Leaving aside the merits of the issue, the consultation should have got to those affected. We need to know why it didn't so I hope you can email the councillors and post up to tell us the response - maybe best as a new thread? - this isn't in James Barber's East Dulwich ward (right on the boundary. suzyq Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I am dismayed with the new parking restrictions > that the council are bringing in along East > Dulwich Road, the side which runs behind > Goosegreen. 8. Hi Barry - Happy New Year! Can you respond on the other thread about the Oyster Card? See the exchange started off by this one: Re: Oyster on the trains from 2nd Jan Posted by: Ginster 02/01/2010, 08:42PM I'm really disappointed about how the scheme is going to work. I assumed I could just swipe my card (I have a zone 1 and 2 annual card on my oyster) and get on the train and as long as I touched out the other end it would work it all out. Unfortunately after doing some reading today it seems whenever I want to go outside of zone 2 I have to get an "Oyster Extension Permit" from a machine, ticket office or newsagents. So really, that isn't going to save me any time or effort from before when I had to queue up to buy an extension (and as ticket machines have never sold extensions I've always had to queue at the office or when that has been closed I have to hope that the station at my destination "believe" me (as I don't see why I should have to buy the full ticket from the machine when I already have part of it paid for.) Does anyone know if this is permanent? Why can't the machines work all this out and charge me accordingly? I'm so disappointed that this isn't as good as I thought it would be.
  9. frequently being offered a seat in crowded tube and overground trains by kind courteous sometimes sheepish middle aged and younger poeple (but interestingy rarely on a bus... though I don't travel much on a bus if I can avoid it.)
  10. I do and it is a wonderful thing. It really is a freedom pass, something that does live up to its name. It gives a real feeling of seamless travel between various travel modes, in spite of the sometimes poor interworking between the companies that operate these different systems. It also helps for me to strengthen the personal feeling of being a Londoner. All that is on top of the reduction in cost of using London's travel system: this is very expensive if you can?t take advantage of discounts available to the very regular commuter traveller, as well as being on a reduced income. So if you use it and value it, or will be eligible some time soon, you might like to see this website MayorWatch which gives an excellent summary of two current issues: ? The problems of travelling with it when bus and underground (run by TfL) take the Pass before 9.30am but overground rail (run by train companies) doesn?t. Much delayed negotiations between TfL and the train companies, to remove this difference, will now start after Easter 2010. ? The threat to the Freedom Pass itself from Government cuts in the subsidy to London Borough councils. The webpage reports on the war of words and possibly worse (ie real cuts).

Tarot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I agree with you Eileen, lets hope there is not a > darker sub plot, where Southwark just wants to > sell the land to build private housing on Just to avoid misunderstanding, Southwark in this case probably means Southwark NHS and not Council. IT is likely that all the land belongs to some bit or other of the NHS. I say likely as I just don't know the facts, but I'd be suprised if this is Council property at all.
  12. Smiler Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What services are provided at the hospital at > present? I have asked for info on this but hasn't arrived. I understand that it is a mixed bad of overspill from elsewhere and offices, and maybe some services that remained from previous times. IE it seems to be currently used as a spare facility without it being a planned coherent mix. That is the impression I got at the meeting, but I haven't got the facts. But I gathered that services for the local community hospital with intermediate beds would be planned from scratch, particularly obvioulsy if it was new buidling on the now demolished half.
  13. I empathise with you cazkid ? it can become unbearable to live beside noisy neighbours who become uncooperative. I know it from experience. I notice that the Council?s noise team website recommends that people troubled by noise do not approach the ?noise offender?. That seems a bit draconian. In some cases that will be very relevant, but maybe in the minority of them. The Council's noise team is hugely important and we didn't always have it. It was hell before that was set up. But calling in the noise team I feel should be the last resort. If it has got so painful that friendly overtures have become impossible, there is another half way house that I thoroughly recommend. This is the local Southwark mediation service. You can find out about his through the Southwark Mediation Centre. It has been going for a long time and has an excellent track record. They operate with paid skilled staff and trained volunteers. They are always looking for volunteers to be trained. It is a very valuable community service, so anyone interested in volunteering and learning in practice all about this wonderful service should visit mediation volunteers PS they do fantastic work teaching schoolchildren to be peer mediators at school. Not only does it have brilliant results in handling school disputes which can otherwise get very nasty, but they learn significant skills which are relevant evrywhere and also are effective role models for not only other children but for adult family members as well. I confess I am a long term fan of mediation! A wonderful human social invention.
  14. Gavin - I first saw your comment, identical to the one you used to start this thread, on your Peckham Rye Labour candidate blog. I tried to post my comment there but the system rejected my attempts to do that so when I saw the same comment posted here I took the chance of posting it here. On your political blog you made no mention of the community efforts as you haven?t on a number of other matters either. There could be no way of knowing you were referring to anything other than Labour party activities. It is just that this seems to be a tendency in your publications and it is just a bit wearisome. I agree this is a welcome development. But Gavin who is 'we' in this - **It seems we may have had some success in convincing the council that this shouldn't be a commercial enterprise. We've just received...** ? Several of us in the community have been working on this for a long time, and continue to do so, long before we had ever heard of you when you suddenly appeared recently. It would be nice if you could acknowedge local community efforts on this and other matters, and not somehow subsume them in your party political campaigning.

  17. alice Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi Eileen do you mean that there arent any rules > preventing councils selling off bits of parks? i > always thought they had some protection Hi Alice ? what I meant was that Peckham Rye Common can?t be sold as it is not normal Council property and has protections not available to non-Common land. I am no expert on the status of land that is designated as park land. But as I understand the situation for Peckham Rye Park it was created out of farm land that the then Council bought on the open market. I assume it then has only special additional protections that it has accumulated since then and I don?t know how permanent they can be. They would for example include the fact that it is designated in the borough overall Land Use Plan (UDP) as Metropolitan Open Land (MOL), but that can be changed by the Council. Parts of it may also have some moral and political protection from its status as a Victorian Park that has been substantially restored with the help of State English Heritage Funds. But that wouldn?t apply to all the land designated as MOL. Maybe others in the EDF who are part of Friends for Peckham Rye Park could comment on this?
  18. Hi Barry Can you remember telling us that the announcements inside the trains would now tell people not to put their feet on seats? I haven't yet heard one. Does it happen at all?

This is not so with Peckham Rye Common, which was transferred to the Council under Common Land legislation from the old LCC in the 1960s.
  21. For me the key issue is intermediate beds for people who no longer need to be occupying expensive acute beds but are not well enough to go home for whatever reason. Other relevant local PCT and some hospital services could be grouped along with such a facility. I went to the meeting advertised recently by the campaign group and discovered it isn?t about saving buildings per se but precisely about the need for intermediate beds plus other relevant and ancillary services across GP, PCT and hospital facilities. The discussion also included this community hospital being built on the part of the site that has already been demolished, so not just about recycling old buildings. It was still not easy to get the facts clear about the exact position on each part of the site, which authority owns what or even what their plans are or indeed that the campaign group has a sorted out position on those details. So the bottom line for us locals seems for me - do we press for a facility for intermediate care beds plus whatever makes sensible ancillary provision? I doubt that we will have any chance of that at all without a local campaign for it. Having experienced major surgery in King?s myself in the last few years I am a strong supporter of the provision of intermediate beds as I could see around me and from my own position the need for such a facility. With the trend towards smaller and older households this is a trend that will increase not diminsh.
  22. Thank you very much Barry. I know that everyone who has taken part in our work over the last few years locally in trying to improve the appearance of Peckham Rye station and Peckham town centre, will be delighted if you can get Spacia to do something about their property. We know how hard a nut that is to crack... If you succeed you deserve even more medals. 24. The campaign continues on a number of levels. Visit http://www.southwarkrailusers.net to keep up to date. Two key recent events are reported below. Also don't forget - if you use Denmark Hill Station - 8am Tuesday 1st December a media photo event. Come and support. for details see link on http://www.southwarkrailusers.net _________________________________________ 1. On 4th November Southwark Council agreed a cross party motion supporting fully and comprehensively the campaign to Save the South London Line. See details here http://www.bellenden.net/sites/default/files/LateMotionSouthLondonLine.docA_.ps_.pdf _________________________________________ 2. Meeting with TfL on 24th November - News from the Save the South London Line Campaign (** see at end for campaign members) Subject: TfL Recognises Need For Central London Links from South London Line stations At a meeting on 24th November with stakeholder groups in South London, TfL recognised one of the main objectives of campaigners, the need to keep radial services to Central London for current South London Line stations. TfL has proposed a variety of short-listed options for keeping service to Victoria, including diverting the East London Line from Clapham Junction, introducing a Victoria- Bellingham service and making current Victoria-Dartford services run all day, guaranteeing for Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye all day trains to Victoria. This is in contrast to TfL's earlier assertions that SLL passengers should take ELLX to Clapham Junction and change for Victoria there. However the Save South London Line Campaign is calling out for the Department for Transport to review all terminating services at London Bridge, based on impact and future demand. Network Rail has acknowledged that keeping the South London Line to London Bridge is possible but would require elaborate signalling or the removal of other services. The Campaign has argued that the cutting of SLL would be a rupture of links and hence impact disproportionately. Negotiations with the DfT over this will continue. The Campaign group is also looking for a Lawyer with experience in Judicial Review proceedings. Anyone able to help? ** The SSLL Campaign is a consortium of elected representatives from all 4 main parties, plus the Southwark Rail Users' Group, Clapham Transport Users Group, Lambeth Public Transport Group, Kings College Hospital, and SLAM (South London & Maudsley).
