Peckham history, architecture & design

Many people might be surprised to discover that Peckham town centre has a lot of beautiful historic buildings. We often just don't see them because they are generally above eye level, above some awful shop fronts. Some of these buildings are significant historic assets. On the High Street there are some 17th and early 18th century reminders of the old village alongside later Georgian development. And there is much more. None of this has any protection, and could disappear any day. For more info see www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/Historic_Peckham On Wednesday tomorrow, The Peckham Society will be presenting ideas on how the buildings could be protected and be part of a conservation-led regeneration of the town centre, together with much better quality design standards for new buildings and shop fronts. Here is a topic worthy of the Forum's famous discussions - what is the value in our historic buildings? We don't need to look far for hugely successful examples of integrating the old with the new - just north of Peckham in Southwark in Bankside. But there are lots all over the country. If you come along to the meeting on Wednesday 19th November 6.30-8.30pm, exhibition & refreshments 6pm at the Bussey building, 133 Rye Lane, opposite Blenheim Grove, directions: http://www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/Bussey_Building , you can come back and stimulate the discussion in the Forum with your information and insights, and help Peckham town centre show its real beauty (eventually).

This is a reminder of the meeting tomorrow Monday 17 November about our local rail services. Meeting 6.30pm-8.30pm, exhibition & refreshments 6pm. The meeting venue is the Bussey building, 133 Rye Lane, SE15, opposite Blenheim Grove, directions A key issue which is going to come up is the train service from London Bridge to East Croydon. Southern Rail are cutting the service in December. This will have two bad effects: * we won't be able to get to East Croydon (and the link to Gatwick) from Peckham Rye, East Dulwich or North Dulwich. * there will be a reduction of two trains per hour from those stations to London Bridge. So if those services are important to you, do come and support the emerging campaign to get the decision reversed.

best airport to get to from east dulwich

Hi - did you know that the London Bridge train via EDulwich & Peckham Rye to East Croydon is being axed by Southern Rail in December? Something to do with releasing capacity for other trains not coming through our stations. This cut means that not only do we lose the direct connection to East Croydon and beyond to Gatwick, but East Dulwich and Peckham Rye lose two of their trains an hour to London Bridge. Rail users who have begun to understand this particular change are raising opposition to it with various bodies and elected reps. It will also figure at the Southwark Rail Users Group (SRUG) meeting on Monday 17th November 6.30pm-8.30pm in the Bussey building 133 Rye Lane SE15 (see the details and discussion in the discussion thread *Are you a local rail user?*). Is anyone able to come and report back to the Forum on this and other local rail use matters? -
Eileen Wrote: > > ..... We have senior speakers from key rail industry bodies. It should be an informative and interesting meeting, tropica Wrote: > This sounds interesting but please would you tell us the names of the speakers and which key rail industry bodies they represent. Eileen: The meeting is in two parts: 1. providing some basic factual information about the way the rail system is structured to aid understanding and discussion about current and any future proposals and decisions on cutting, reducing, changing or improving particular services and routes (e.g. highly relevant to the controversial issue of the ending of the South London Loop Line); 2. explaining the support structures and services for users, and providing an opportunity for users to voice their needs and views. Part 1: Railway infrastructure: * Speaker: Andrew Munden, Kent Route Director for Network Rail . Topic: The SE overground railway system, including restructuring of London Bridge station, and effects on services at Southwark stations. * Speaker: senior TfL person from East London Line Project. Topic: East London Line Extension Phase 2: description, explanation & update on plans, funding and construction. Questions and answers Part 2: Services and User Needs * Speaker: Sharon Hedges, Passenger Link Manager at Passenger Focus. www.passengerfocus.org.uk * Speaker: Tim Bellenger. Director, Research and Development. London Travel Watch. www.londontravelwatch.org.uk * Speaker: Barry Jones, Area Manager Southern Rail (Manager for all mid Southwark Stations except Nunhead.) Questions, answers, comments, discussion Also present for the second part will be representatives of the four train operating companies (TOCs) that are bidding for the new South Central Franchise operating all services to London Bridge through our local stations, including the Victoria-London Bridge Loop line. The Bid Specification can be seen at www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/closed/southcentralfranchise/stakeholderbriefing/ The four bidding TOCs are: Govia/Southern Rail (current franchise holders). National Express Ned Railways Stagecoach Rail This meeting is a rare opportunity for users to say what is right and wrong with current services and facilities and what changes they want. Not everything is within the power to change of the rail industry representatives present, but it is key information for them from the users and could especially influence the bids the TOCs make for the new SC franchise.

KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What happens after the meeting? I mean how/what > information is shared and to whom? We will write up an account of the meeting and send it out by email to the SRUG mailing list which is now nearly 200. Any actions for SRUG or local rail users, which emerge at the meeting, will be noted. If anyone wants to be on this list, please email Southwark Rail Users' Group [email protected], saying which station(s) they tend to use. We hope that there will be a good number of local rail users present to help get the issues, at each of our local stations and their train services, aired in front of the people who can do something about them. There have been from time to time discussions on this forum about problems at East Dulwich station so this is the time and place to come and say something about them. Other stations involved are Peckham Rye, Queens Rd Peckham, South Bermondsey, Nunhead, Denmark Hill, North Dulwich.

There are lots of changes being planned to the rail services that run through our local stations - Peckham Rye, East Dulwich, North Dulwich, Nunhead, Queens Rd Peckham, Denmark Hill. If you have an interest in improving services at any of these stations, you might like to register your email address with the Southwark Rail Users Group (SRUG). SRUG has emerged from the controversy last year over the South London Loop Line. It has been doing some work to try become well informed on the main issues so we can be better equipped to comment in future, and influence what is decided early in the planning. Waiting till they decide to consult is far too late to influence most decisions. The current issues include: * East London Line Extension phase 2; * effect on local services of rebuilding London Bridge station; * planned cut in South London Loop Line, * planned cut in Peckham to East Croydon service; * service changes to Victoria, Blackfriars, London Bridge; * station improvements; travel improvements. The Southwark Rail Users Group is having its first public meeting on Monday 17th November 6.30pm-830pm in central Peckham to throw some light on all this. We have senior speakers from key rail industry bodies. It should be an informative and interesting meeting, and also provide a real opportunity to get views across to some of the people who can have some influence on what happens. To reserve a place, get details of the venue, join the mailing list, get more information: email [email protected]

The Blake mural has been painted over by the Council

I had asked for a slot to say something about the mural issue, and GG meeting at the mural on 15 October, but was confined to the end at Questions when most people had gone. I just had time to mention the issue for the record and that we needed to do something about the way officers don't seem equipped to handle issues where people who live in a locality probably know a lot more about the issue than the Council officers, and it would be more efficent to communicate with them first. With a bit of luck we might be able to get into this at the next meeting 12 November when the Council CEO, Annie Shepherd, will be there for the first time. By then hopefully everything will have been decided about how to restore the mural. Then it would be more about learning the lessons for real of this continuous failure to communicate locally by unjoined up Council departments. -
my car had two flat tyres yesteday morning in Nutbrook St. RAC patrol said they were deliberate punctures with a sharp point making a hole. Another person in the street also had two punctures same overnight, though it is not such a clear verdict what they might have been caused by. Another person in Nutbrook St recently had 4 tyres apparently deliberately punctured. Anyone else having similar?

I am a bit baffled. Where is this co-op at Peckham Rye?

snoozequeen1 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Just wondering if it's been getting funding all > these years and who from! One of the points about this place is that it has had NO funding ever from the Council. It used a derelict piece of land between the railway lines as the lines leave Peckham Rye station, where one goes south to Nunhead and the other north to London Bridge. That is why it is known mainly to people who WALK along Consort Road. The entrance is on the east side under the railway bridge and between those lines. The Council left the land derelict and it was used by fly tippers. These people went in and cleared it up 10 years ago and made very good use of it. Two years ago the Council remembered they had the land and gave them a lease for two years at a small rental Then the Council came a few months ago and said you have to get out within weeks unless you pay us ?500,000 .There was no other notification. They got a stay of execution to see if they could have the decision modified and the price lowered; but end August seems now to be the eviction date. No evidence has been provided, that I have seen, of the Council having calculated the costs this place is saving them in providing such very useful and relevant community facilities at such a cheap rate. So in Southwark the Council continues on a path of closing down working community facilities while spending millions picking up the pieces of the lack of community facilities for bored and alienated young people.

The website seems to say (see below) that the figures behind the maps are of reported crimes (with an identifed location). I am not sure that all reports get translated into what previous posts call 'offences'. Website says: "Please note, that whilst every effort is made to record the details of crime and its location as accurately as possible, there are occasions when victims are unable to provide the actual location of a crime. In these instances, the site will not be able to display all the crime reported to the police."

I asked Barclays on Lordship Lane if their ATM had been affected at all and they said no it definitely had not. They had heard of the issues with the HSBC machine on the opposite corner and the guy said that some Barclays' customers were affected having used that machine. I don't know how accurate all that is but the person telling me in Barclays seemed possibly to be the manager who was helping out on the counter. ie he seemed to be confident in what he was saying. Parking ticket at the bottom of East Dulwich Road
Eileen replied to jaybee82's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
exactly same happened to me here last year - if you mean where the narrow road leads into Grove Vale. I objected to tthe Parking Office, (not an appeal) and they withdrew the ticket after a few weeks. I took photos, sent them to them and demonstrated that there was no obvious distinction between the cars parked in the same way with wheels on kurb, and my car, and none of them had tickets. I followed my letter up with a phone call to make sure they had it and that they would consider the letter before they took any further action. I think (can't recall clearly now) I may have also managed to get them to send me a letter confirming that so I didn't have to worry about the fine being doubled. If they want to enforce this end of the road as no parking I think they need to get the lines painted on it properly. They won't need to do that if everyone meekly pays up on what I think may be a legally unenforceable parking control when it is not clearly shown to be one. But even if it is enforceable, and I was just lucky in their response, I still think they should get the lines painted properly and we need to continue to object to this deplorable way of managing the parking system. I am strongly in favour of parking controls but even I am alienated by this bad local government management. -
Hi Louisa I drew the attention of The Lane ward Councillor Susan Jones to your post, as this car park is in her ward. She has offered to help. I suggest you email her at [email protected] or phone 020 7401 7950 This is what she said: "I have not come across anything quite like this, but if accurate, it's appalling and the person who posted the story needs to go to the press. If we know who this person is, I would be more than happy to follow it up as a case."

I was driving out of the junction at the time when the traffic was very slow becasue of the blockage. Someone was bing lifted from the road into an ambulance. It was not clear if they had been in an accident or just fallen or collapsed. They seemed to be sitting up on the stretcher, though covered in a blanket. Eileen

Hi macroban - this is a very interesting picture. Do you have a good version or know where I could get one? And also more about its date? I am collecting historical pictures of Goose Green and this would be a good addition.

Hi - did any of you go to the Goose Green Fun Dog Event last Saturday 24 May (organised by the Council's Community Wardens)? Friends of Goose Green had an information stall there. We would be interested in your reactions to the dog event, so feedback welcome. Most perhaps all seemed to enjoy it and wanted more. There seemed to be a lot of unmet need in dog behaviour information, and so quite a bit of potential to help people learn how to socialise their dogs better, as well as lots of other dog things that could be offered. What do you think? Eileen

Pity we haven't had more notice so we could have advertised it widely to all those who need some dog education ... But there is still time to get the info out and try to increase the number of owners trained on how to be good owners. -

Some small inching forward into trying to get a genuine scrutiny of the implications of 950 boys on that small site. Next key step : Lobby of Children's Services and Education Scrutiny Sub-Committee 6:30pm, Wednesday 19th March Peckham Town Hall, Peckham Road, SE15 meet outside, and then go in to the meeting together at 7pm. -
so it wasn't my imagination! I did wonder at the time, felt a bit of vertigo, and then forgot about it. Just looked at the BBC news website: Earthquake hits much of England http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm The biggest earthquake in the UK for nearly 25 years has shaken homes across large parts of England. People in Newcastle, Yorkshire, London, Manchester, the Midlands and Norfolk felt the tremor at about 0100 GMT.
