  1. Someone put this on top of my green bin yesterday. If you dropped it by mistake or know whose it is, please PM me. I will leave it there in case someone comes back for it, but if it's still there by the end of the week I will take it to the hospice shop for rags.
  2. Thanks Ianr and Jenijenjen. So from what Ianr has found, it has been the EDT since at least 1990, so I don't know why the new owners should have put 1999 on it (unless I misread it - I was over the road). At least my memory is correct, as I was sure it was the EDT when I moved here in 1991!
  3. I've just noticed the EDT says outside " established 1999". But it was there before that, surely? Have I imagined it?
  4. It depends how you define a charity shop, surely?. The proceeds of its sales are used for rent, permanent staff (if any) and then the charity, presumably. I also presume the £35 jeans were a "designer" brand and in good condition? If people will pay that, then fair enough to charge it. If they won't, then they will reduce the price of the jeans, I expect.
  5. I had very bad subsidence in my front bay. I had no choice but to involve my insurance company. One person who visited said it was the worst he had ever seen. In the end, the whole bay had to be completely rebuilt. It was an absolute nightmare. There is quite a large tree outside, but after extensive investigation, including drilling down a long way and taking soil samples at various points, no evidence was found of tree roots in the soil beneath the bay. It was eventually concluded that the subsidence was due to made ground (I think it's called), I believe from when the house was built. I had to have resin injection all around the bay, but the work is guaranteed for ten (I think) years. And yes, my insurance premiums shot up. At one point I had to change my insurer, but I found a very helpful company who specialise in houses who have had subsidence, and got a much better deal through them. If there is evidence that tree roots are causing subsidence, I would have thought that the insurance company would have a very strong case to make to the council to get the tree removed? Though as Penguin68 says, removing a tree can cause heave (I think it's called), and consequently further problems.
  6. What are the "far more interesting shops" in Rye Lane? This is a serious question. The only one I've ever found interesting was the Rastamouse shop in the covered market, and it sadly isn't there any more. The Rastamouse man was lovely, and great with my grandkids when they were little ❤️
  7. The Thai Corner Cafe in North Cross Road still is cash only! I didn't think rotisserie chicken places still existed 😮
  8. It was always quite a strange place in some ways, though the food was usually very good. Although...... We ate there fairly recently. We had been headed to Chern Thai, but they were closed It was the night after Valentine's day, and Il Mirto were still offering a special menu. One of the items was a gorgonzola pasta dish. I really like gorgonzola, so I ordered it. However it was really bland (though a massive portion) and there was no discernable taste of gorgonzola. When I queried this, the chef said he had put a lot of gorgonzola in. Further discussion ascertained that he had used the mild kind of gorgonzola (aka to me as the completely pointless tasteless kind) , not the piccante, as "some people don't like the taste of gorgonzola." Erm. Why would someone who didn't like gorgonzola order a dish whose USP was gorgonzola in the first place? I didn't pursue it further, but it was an extremely disappointing meal from my point of view We just paid up and left. ETA: Il Mirto opened a second place in Nunhead Lane, didn't they, a long time ago? On the stretch between the Rye and The Old Nun's Head. It didn't last long, if memory serves. It seemed an odd place to open a restaurant at the time, though there used to be a pub there, I can't remember its name Does anybody else remember this?
  9. That's really great that they are going to do something with it, and especially something that will benefit the community, rather than expensive housing which will benefit a few It reminds me of the old Arding & Hobbs corner building in Clapham Junction. I'm guessing probably of the same sort of era? I suppose department stores mostly died a death with the internet and online shopping? Or did it start before that?
  10. They haven't said it's because of "lack of money", they have said it's "uneconomical to repair", which is quite different! If they had spent a lot of money repairing it, some people would be complaining about that! I assume (and it's just an assumption, as obviously I am not privy to their thought processes) that they have decided that the amount of money necessary to repair it would be better put towards a completely new bridge. The money spent on the refurbishment of the Dulwich Village junction is irrelevant, surely? I don't know how council budgets are worked out, but surely these two budgets must be completely separate pots of money, and they can't take money from one pot and put it in the other pot ? (sorry, I don't mean to sound as if I'm explaining this to a three year old). Well, we don't know that without knowing all the details, do we? That's a very big assumption/accusation. Though I agree that on the face of it, it doesn't look good if the bridge has become unfit for purpose in such a short time.
  11. It's quite a large area of water, reeds etc! I'm sure they had sufficient places to find privacy when the bridge was open, should they not be hungry and after bird seed!
  12. Oh that's really sad. It can't have been properly installed with the correct materials in the first place, surely? A friend of mine works on similar projects, but he's abroad at the moment. When he comes back I'll see if he knows anything about this one. I wonder why they haven't put a notice at both ends of the bridge so people know why it's closed? Thanks for the update, claresy.
  13. But as noted before on other threads, and in fact also on this thread as I just looked back, surely it isn't the best use of council workers' time to come and clean up every time somebody reports dog mess? If everybody reported every incident, the workers would be constantly going backwards and forwards. There is dog mess everywhere round here. Plus it's not exactly an incentive to the people leaving the mess, if they know someone else will come and clear it up. It just adds to our council tax bills. There must be better ways of addressing the problem, like more dog mess bins. Then the workers presently responding to one off requests to remove one off piles of s**t could be more usefully employed in emptying those bins. I do understand that the people with these incontinent dogs probably wouldn't use the bins anyway. What do other boroughs do? What do other countries do?
  14. Sadly The Palmerston has (imo) gone the same way. A gradual deterioration from the quirky charm it once had to a bland sort of corporate style and (imo) a horrid font for the pub name over the door outside and terrible (imo) art inside (apologies if you are one of the artists, but I understand the art was shipped in by the pubco). Tastes differ, obviously, but it all sets my teeth on edge. In one of its incarnations, it used to have regularly changing art displays by local artists. These were much more interesting and engaging, and if one particular set were not to your personal taste, at least they weren't there permanently. I will still continue to go there, because the manager and the staff are lovely. The changes aren't their fault, and I'm sure the pub will do well, because - as with the EDT - it is presumably meeting what research has shown the present East Dulwich residents want. ETA: To be fair, some of the most recent changes have been an improvement, eg changing some of the lighting to fit in better with its surroundings.
  15. I don't think H&B can be doing very well. I went in yesterday to collect my order (lots of nuts. I freeze them. I eat a lot of nuts). The place was empty. The manager, who seemed to be the only member of staff there, was very helpful (I had to remove the nuts from the box to fit the order into my backpack, as the box wouldn't fit, so I think in future I will stick to getting things delivered!) But then he said, have a look around, you can have 10% off. But I didn't want to look around, because if there had been anything I wanted I would have added it to my order and got 22% off! Just wondering if they are offering everybody a discount to try to get people to buy things? I felt a bit sorry for him, rattling around by himself in a big empty shop.
  16. Their sausage and mash was an absolute bargain in the days when they did a really good veggie sausage and gravy. Then they got a new chef. The veggie sausages (I assume bought in, and from a different - presumably cheaper - source) became absolutely disgusting, verging on inedible. So no longer a bargain. If you are looking for a bargain lunch, head to Chern Thai, near the station. Lunchtime special 12 -3 Monday to Friday. £9 for a main, £12 for main plus starter. Thai lager on draft. Very nice food and lovely people.
  17. They have considerably upped their prices since the refurb, in the larger shop at least (though to reflect generally better quality clothes etc being sold, to be fair) so they can probably afford it. It's "vintage" now, not "charity shop." 🤣 Annoying for people like me who have always frequented charity shops and found bargains, and now there are loads of people shopping there, and very few real bargains! I'm assuming it's the same trend for the children's shop as for adult charity shops.
  18. They always used to have at least one (relatively) low priced ale on. Don't know about lager. And to be fair, if you are running this kind of business, and the local demographic has changed around you, you have to allow for that or your business is going to fail.
  19. I wonder which part/s of the bridge are affected? Pathway or side barriers (don't know the proper terms, sorry). Or both? I think there was a thread on here before (but I can't remember the subject) which included a discussion about using a "man" made material which looks more or less identical to wood but is much longer lasting. I have seen it used on paths and bridges in places like nature reserves. If I hadn't been told it wasn't wood, I would never have known. I wonder why something like that wasn't used in the first place? The bridge hasn't been there that long, has it? Surely whatever wood was used shouldn't be rotting already? Happy memories with my grandkids when they were younger, on the bridge feeding bird seed to the ducks (and other birds!)
  20. Pleased to hear the EDT has good food! It has been very variable in the past. I didn't realise the Palmerston had a restaurant on one side? Do you mean the small room at the back near the toilets? All the rest is one big room, isn't it? Which part of the EDT is now the restaurant? The back room on the right as you face the pub? Also, I saw they had a sign to an upstairs lounge bar. I have deja vu. Wasn't it a lounge bar circa 2008, albeit the public access was from the separate door on the street? I assume they are now using the indoor stairs? Memo to self: Go in and check all this out for yourself 🤣 I really miss the huge painting of a dancer (?) that used to be in the EDT before they (understandably) removed it to put in more windows and hence make the room lighter. Does anybody know what happened to it? I so hope someone is enjoying it somewhere, and that it wasn't just destroyed.
  21. We've had another delivery since the change of management, and again it was delicious. Hooray! The fish dish is really outstanding. They do need to get their (new?) website sorted, as only one of the "menu" links seems to work (the mauve cloud one does bring up the menu - don't click on the one in the inserted pic though, as it's a screenshot!)
  22. I would have agreed, but the pub which was there previously seemed to do alright? It might work the other way round, that if a pub was there the nearby businesses (eg the plant/flower shop) might actually get more custom? Admittedly that bar which was briefly on the corner of Melford (?) Road didn't do very well, but I think that was for different reasons.
