  1. How will poverty be measured? I couldn't see this anywhere, but I might have missed it.
  2. Yes, that was what I was thinking of, thanks!
  3. Ah, I remember the Kings Arms I think, though had forgotten the name. Wasn't it some kind of club?
  4. Thanks jazzer, jazzer, Jazzer 😀 I don't know either of those pubs, believe it or not, so I will google the Heaton Arms, thank you (and thanks for the tip about the easiest way!) ETA: Well, I googled it and apparently it was demolished in 2005 🤣 but I guess it was somewhere near Heaton Road. ETA again: It looks like I can get a 63 or 363 from the stop near the end of Barry Road, so assuming that's open that would be easier.
  5. I need to go to Asda in the Old Kent Road tomorrow. Theoretically I can get a 78 or 363 bus, but it looks as if the bus stop at East Dulwich Road/Peckham Rye may be closed. I don't know why, but I assume it may be due to gas or water works. Does anybody know if it is just this bus stop, or are other bus stops (or the routes) affected? I don't want to get a nasty surprise tomorrow, as I have an appointment, so it's time critical.
  6. A description limited to just " white, 50s, male" would be equally useless in identifying anybody, because it could apply to so many people. What point are you trying to make? And I didn't "jump down the OP's throat." The way the thread has developed is how threads work. Different people have different views on things. And the point about media references to migrants and single mothers was relevant to the discussion.
  7. But it's a forum. For discussion. You can't control what other people want to say in response to somebody else's post! Threads go in all sorts of directions.
  8. If you haven't been to the EDT since the refurb, to get upstairs you now come in through the main entrance, turn right and go through the door marked Lounge Bar. Then go to the top of the stairs and turn right. We will be in the area past the top bar (which will be closed, so please get a drink at the bar downstairs before you come up!) As said above, please message me in advance if you need help in getting up stairs, and we can arrange it.
  9. How was what I posted in any way childish? I stand by what I said, that the description given could apply to many people and was not helpful in identifying the person. It is not clear why it needed to be posted on here at all.
  10. The original post was about one shoplifter. Nobody is suggesting that the shoplifter wasn't totally in the wrong, or that there may be issues with what shop staff and security guards can or can't do in this and similar situations. However a description of a woman which includes only skin colour and perceived age is problematic in my view.
  11. That description could apply to many people. Why have you said what her skin colour was but not what she was wearing? What do you think will be achieved by posting this on here? If you think the security man should have stopped her, would it not be more constructive to complain to the Co-op? And what has one shoplifter got to do with "the state of this country"? There have always been thieves.
  12. https://www.theguardian.com/news/ng-interactive/2025/jul/12/is-the-british-left-making-a-comeback-uk-politics?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
  13. Sorry got in a muddle with editing and can't see how to delete this
  14. I share your sentiments, but I'm not sure suggesting she be nominated for a Nobel peace prize counts as "not staying silent", under the circumstances. Not that I have any better suggestions. I feel these days that I am living in some sort of dystopian movie. I'm not sure why Jazzer finds your post amusing 🙄
  15. Rockets said: The pattern of the plethora of incidents of this happening locally. It's part of the criminals' MO. Do you know this just because of what's been posted on here? Because not everyone in East Dulwich posts on this forum! I'm not saying you aren't right, because it would make sense for the moped riders to pick on drivers who they perceived as weaker, but do you have the hard data to back it up?
  16. So let's never do anything that might improve an area, because it will just be dragged down to the level of what's presently there? Is that what you are saying? I don't have the time or the inclination to do the research, but I'm pretty sure that I have read that when people who had lived in a very run down area were given nice surroundings, they appreciated and looked after them.
  17. What exactly is the point of having a go at someone who is trying to help and spread useful information? Is the heat getting to people? What does it matter what someone calls dogs?
  18. Yes, they are intelligent ❤️ Various methods of deterring the foxes (aka stopping them coming and crapping on your lawn) have been suggested in this thread. If you don't want to try them, and prefer to keep clearing up the crap and complaining about it, well that's YOUR choice 🙄
  19. Weirdly (well, weird as it happened very shortly after I had posted that) I got a notice the other day (the first time in the near enough twenty years since I joined the forum) telling me I had reached my limit of "reactions". I posted a screenshot on here. However I did not actually seem be prevented from making any more! What is your purpose in doing that? This is a useful, long running and well loved (by me, anyway) local forum. It provides information on matters of local interest, an opportunity to easily sell or give away unwanted things and buy or be given things you want, information on upcoming local events and interest groups. It is also a well moderated place to discuss both local and wider issues. And it is used by a variety of different kinds of people, as would be expected - we all have different personalities, experiences and opinions, and that's part of what makes the forum such a great local asset. Since rescuing the forum when the previous admin left - it could have disappeared altogether - Joe has put and continues to put an enormous amount of work into setting it up on a different platform (?) , maintaining it, and keeping it a safe and pleasant place for everyone using it. I'm sure you and others will correct me if I'm wrong, but it feels to me that dissecting "posters and their patterns" in the way you describe - presumably then to post the results on here? - is just going to sow seeds of discord which could stop some people posting altogether and generally change the whole nature of the forum. I think that would be very sad, and I hope that that isn't your intention? It could also be quite harmful for the more vulnerable people who post on here. Are you going to include your own posts in this? You have joined the forum relatively recently, and seem to be self-described as a "Pain".
  20. I was referring to the two posters above who both said that they had to be in a different position on the road than they would normally have been because of vehicles parked too near corners (presumably affecting their view round the corner). I obviously wasn't suggesting that every fake "accident" is caused by that, but in those cases it presumably made it easier to make it look as though the "accident" was at least partly the car driver's fault. And my reference to it happening all the time round here was about the parking too near corners. Many many decades ago I got a fine for doing that, and I presume it's still not allowed, for safety reasons.
  21. I didn't say anything was "a fact". I said it was "hardly likely" 🙄 Do you seriously think someone would go out of their way to harm or kill an unusual animal? Even assuming they ever actually saw it? And then you deleted your post. Did you not want people to see what you had said?
  22. One of the issues is cars and vans parking too close to a corner (presumably on yellow lines?) It happens all the time round here.
  23. Well why don't you read the posts on this thread suggesting humane ways of deterring them from your garden, and do something constructive about it, instead of moaning? As for culling - how do you think that should be done, exactly? And yes, as said above, they control rodents. Would you rather be overrun by rats?
  24. It's hardly likely someone was going to kill him just because they knew about him 🙄
