Laptop squatters - the new Japanese knotweed?
Sue replied to Chief's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip

I went to Melange this afternoon, only to find that sadly they had nothing in boxes, only chocolate bars in cellophane bags, which was not quite what I was after, nice though I'm sure they are. They said that they did not do truffles after Easter because nobody wanted them ?!?!?! but would be starting them again in a week or so (too late for me). Since time was getting short, I have ended up with two middle-of-the-road boxes from Sainsbury's, not what I was after at all, will have to wrap them prettily and hope the recipients don't notice they are Thorntons and Green & Black's :(

My sister, who is whatever the modern equivalent of registered disabled is, has very poor health and also at the time had pneumonia and was quite weak, was asked to vacate her priority seat on a bus by somebody with a "baby on board" badge who was not obviously pregnant but was quite rude to her. A bit like somebody I knew who was perfectly able bodied but had somehow acquired a "disabled" notice for his car to enable him to park in designated spaces, I think it is easy for somebody to claim to be something they are not in order to get a seat. I'm not suggesting this person was not pregnant, but just because you are pregnant does not make you unable to stand, although it may do. Unless things have changed since I was pregnant in the dark ages :)) (Covers head to avoid flak). When taking a lift at a station to avoid having to walk up the stairs, my sister was also told by somebody with a buggy that she should not be in the lift because it was just for people with children and suitcases !!! I was tempted to suggest that she should get crutches or a walking stick.

What are the "old person's seats"? I thought they were for people who were disabled or heavily pregnant, for example, who find it hard to stand up? Surely just being old doesn't entitle you to a seat? If it does, then I shall immediately claim mine on every bus I enter from now on :))

I assume you leave your car permanently in your road, so that you are not clogging up some other residents' road when you drive to another area?

The Co-op hasn't got the kind of thing I'm looking for, and I don't recall Sainsbury's having anything much, not that I'm usually looking for chocs in Sainsbury. Sorry, not looking to spend lots of money :)) just want something that doesn't look like it's bought from a service station :)) But I can't tell what sort of price Melange's are, as their website isn't exactly bursting with info .....

Is there anywhere in ED I can get chocs which are a bit of a step up from the stuff they sell in supermarkets? I'm not looking for massively expensive ones, just something which doesn't look like I've been a total cheapskate (as if :)) ) It's times like this I miss Hope and Greenwood. Dog biscuits just wouldn't do.

I'm also needing a new laptop to replace my old Dell. I suggest you google "laptop reviews" (John Lewis will only have reviews of the ones they sell, which is a very limited range) and then also as suggested above go to PC World to look at them in the flesh. My OH bought one online without seeing it first and the keyboard is very flimsy compared to my Dell. You don't need to spend a fortune to get something decent. Just make sure it meets all your present (and foreseeable future) needs and doesn't have any bad reviews.

I have discovered this morning that it is not the people emptying my brown bin who are doing this, but the people emptying my green bin (and presumably the blue bin as well as it happens every week). This week they have excelled themselves as in throwing the brown bin into my garden they have broken the bin. And they have left my neighbour's green bin in my garden as well as my own. At least that hasn't broken any pots or plants. I have found the contact details for Veolia in Devon Street. Is that who I need to get in touch with, or the council? -
Agreed. Plants in excellent condition, friendly people and some interesting garden-related things.
