  1. I need to edit a pdf file which is an ad. The deadline is 5 September (for the October/November issue of the publication) and the person who usually does this for me is away till after then :( The layout will be basically the same, but there are quite a few text changes. I have just downloaded a free pdf editor (AbleWord) but when I open the pdf in it, there is no text appearing. I thought this might be because it is white text on a black background, but I've changed the text and background colour and still no text is appearing, just a logo strip down the left, and the Facebook and Twitter logos at the bottom. Can anybody tell me what I might be doing wrong, or suggest another free pdf editor? I'll attach a screenshot of what's appearing in the editor, but I'll have to do it in a separate post as apparently the two attachments are too big :(

Was that the only criterion the council used in deciding to award Conway the contract, then? Price? Because that seems a rather short-term approach. I once worked somewhere which did that. They had windows fitted by the cheapest quoting contractor. The windows had to be replaced within a relatively short time. It would have been cheaper to pay more for higher standards in the first place.
  4. If someone is working from home they might well welcome an occasional break from staring at their own four walls, whilst still needing to carry on working. However I do think it is selfish to hog a table for hours with one cup of coffee when others are needing a place to sit. But some people have always done that, except it might be with a book or whatever and not a laptop.
  5. We also dropped in last night. The place has a nice feel, the staff were friendly, and we had an excellent pint of Brakspear and a pint of something from a local brewery (sorry wasn't my pint so I can't remember what it was) for ?7. We had intended eating but weren't really tempted by the particular menu on offer last night, and thought many of the items were priced on the high side, however we will try again! We will deffo be back for drinks, anyway. Good luck Cherry Tree, hope you thrive, start of a whole new era :)

Same here, except that the peelings go in my compost bin to make compost. And bread will freeze. You can slice it before you freeze it and use a slice at a time. You can separate the slices with freezer sheets, can't remember what they're called, so they don't stick together. Same with things like bacon. And if you have too much meat or fish to eat at one sitting, you can cook the whole lot and safely freeze half (or more) of the cooked dish.

Toss-up between a place I once stayed in Brighton which had a used tampon in the drawer and a B&B in Manchester where breakfast was almost raw boiled eggs and a glass of fizzy lemonade.

Not necessarily mason-connected however.

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The delay due to obtaining kerb stone - weirdly > not ordered sufficiently before the works started > and that they have to be imported. You could not > make this up. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have a query about the tendering process. What are the criteria for choosing contractors, and is the process transparent? Are we allowed to know who else has tendered and why Conway are chosen each time? And who in the council is ultimately responsible for this decision? Because the ability of Conway's managers to actually project manage appears to be, let's say, limited.
  11. When my blue bin has been full, I have sometimes (eg if having a clearout) put recycling into a black bin bag, but clearly marked it "recycling, thank you" and left it with the blue bin on a recycling collection day. It has always been taken with no problem at all. I assume they empty the contents (usually paper) and chuck the bin bag away.
  12. Dulwich Fox, I think you are confusing the issue. Obviously black bags, or any other colour plastic bags, or any non-degradable material for that matter, cannot be included with garden waste or other recycling. I am unaware of any edict which says you cannot put black bags into a green bin, which is for non-recyclable rubbish. Perhaps you are thinking of the days when people put their rubbish into a black bag and left it outside like that, without putting it into a bin at all? I believe it was that which was banned. Unless you can point to somewhere on the council website which says otherwise? ETA: On another point, my sister says that Merton Council have recently gone the other way to Southwark - they used to charge residents for collection of bulk waste, and now it is free.
  13. I guess it's not their fault if a substitute instructor doesn't turn up, although they are expecting him/her to take the class? That doesn't excuse not responding to emails, though.

Some of the stuff I put in the green bin might occasionally be in a black bin bag, but most is not. Nobody has ever left a note telling me I was doing it wrong :)

Siduhe Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > If you have loose items they leave the bin (in my > case with a note on explaining why it wasn't > emptied the one time I'd left unbagged flowers > in). I didn't know that! Before I had a compost heap I quite often put unbagged flowers, deadheaded flowers etc in the outside caddy - I never got a note :)
  17. If you don't have paper, I don't know if it would be allowed to use say a carrier bag but then decant the contents from the kitchen caddy into the brown bin outside? On second thoughts, probably too messy and smelly :(
  18. Just passed there. Loads of people working on it, and lights prominently and sensibly placed. Pity it apparently took an incident like this to give them a kick up the ****
  19. I saw it too. Don't think it was sneaky. Not surprised they are stopping doing it - I was inundated with green bags left on my doorstep and (luckily) now have enough to last me for years :)) So they probably spent a lot more on the bags than they needed to. Plus some batches seemed to be quite crap and split as soon as you tried to put them on the bin :(

    Labour Leadership

Have read this thread with interest. I have always voted Labour (except once SNP when I lived in Scotland) but I had to do it with gritted teeth at the last election. It was a matter of voting for the least bad, rather than with any kind of conviction. It feels to me like JC (!) is bringing Labour back to what it is supposed to be about (in my opinion) - decency, morality and caring for others. I'm sick to the core of what this country has become, and I actually don't think JC is unelectable. I think many people who didn't vote at the last election eg because they didn't see any of the parties as relevant to them, may do so next time. It is of course in many politicians' interests to portray him as unelectable.

Very sorry for everybody affected including the driver, and thankful that nobody was hurt.
  22. No, you're not missing something, however surely the driver should have noticed people in the road irrespective of whether there was a light in North Cross Road. It all sounds very traumatic, but I can't see that this is anybody's fault but the driver's, sorry. I do agree that the junction is an absolute nightmare at the moment for everybody using it. ETA: Suppose there had been lights in North Cross Road, suppose the lights were green but there were pedestrians on the crossing. Would the driver still have just almost run them over? Any driver should still be looking out for people in the road, surely? You don't need a red light. Also, cars could be coming out of North Cross Road who want to turn right.
  23. That did occur to me as well, bob :))
