    Cherry Tree

Really? Do you know why not? How nice for the outgoing landlord to be able to turn down an offer "at any price"!!

The smell from the gents hit you as you walked in the door!! ETA: Before anyone says it, yes I mean the bogs not the customers :))
  3. Leaves usually rot down very quickly if you leave them in closed black plastic bin bags, then you can just put the resulting compost-type stuff on your garden (I assume you have a garden if you have so many leaves! Though you might not have anywhere to put unsightly full black bin bags).

    Plusnet

Has anybody else been having problems recently with Plusnet? I had always been very happy with it, but over the last few months it seems to be intermittently going down. Only for a short time each time, and not that frequently, but annoyingly. Am wondering if it's my modem or whether it's a more general issue in the area? I'm going to phone them, but thought I'd see first if anybody else was finding the same thing.

    Cherry Tree

Damn, was hoping for a Wetherspoons! And I agree with El Pibe, people had high hopes for The Cherry Tree at one point, and those hopes lasted just a few months during which the food was excellent, the range of drinks was excellent and the chef and managers were lovely. And more and more people were sussing this out and going to eat/drink there. Then the usual happened and it was back to its normal dismal empty self. Any "abuse" (that's a bit of an exaggeration) subsequently directed towards the people responsible for the usual happening was based on facts and well deserved in view of their actions, in my opinion. Anyway good luck to whatever replaces The Cherry Tree, it surely can't be worse than its most recent incarnations.

    PIZZA

Lowlander Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ps I was also miffed about the lack of pale ale, > that was the first Saturday they opened, so still > without it!? Well they certainly didn't have any the Saturday just gone. I assumed they'd sold out, I didn't realise they hadn't had any to start with! The lager was fine though.
  9. I think it's brilliant that we've got somebody busking in East Dulwich. I'm thinking of bringing out my melodeon. Be very afraid :))

    PIZZA

It says on the back of Franco Manca's menu/place mats why their pizzas are a bit chewy. Can't remember exactly but apparently they are intended to be like that. I agree the Gowlett's are crispier, but I had another one at Franco Manca on Saturday and it was absolutely delicious again :) Though I found it a bit odd that they'd run out of pale ale, considering it's in bottles (so won't go off if they get a load in) and they have a relatively small range of drinks!

Yes that sounds about right to me He did something about "You kings, you kings" and sawing which I shall never forget, in case that helps anybody who thinks he might have done more than one gig at the EDT :))

  13. Thank you for posting this info, Penguin68
  14. Thanks for that, Jah Lush! Sorry not to see North Cross Road though. I hadn't even realised there ever was a Heber Arms pub. I had to turn the music off after the first few bars :))
  15. The Ivy House ( http://www.ivyhousenunhead.com ) was absolutely rammed on Friday night. We ( http://www.thegooseisout.com ) had a fantastic sell out gig in the ballroom, and both the front bar and the refectory were heaving with people who weren't at the gig. Despite a few miserable nay-sayers on here before it re-opened as a community owned pub, it more than met its financial target for its first year, and has won several awards including pub of the year in Time Out, a CAMRA award and an English Heritage award. Like any pub it's obviously not going to be busy all the time, but for it to have succeeded as it has in a location which I would say is more off the beaten track than either The Great Exhibition or The Patch is an amazing achievement by a lot of local people who have worked really hard to bring about that success. It also has a great range of drinks at a reasonable price, lovely bar staff and loads of regular and one-off activities going on. And a nice little garden out the back. And real wood fires in cold weather. What more could you ask for?

However the lack of business nous of the Patch team was surely exemplifed by their portraying their location as a plus point rather than a challenge?

Could it be due to illness or worse which would explain the lack of response to emails?
  18. I too have a query - about robins! There were two in my garden today apparently quite happily co-existing. I thought robins fought over territory, so would they be a pair? It seems a strange time of year as surely they are not nesting? I quite often have a robin in the garden but I've never seen two together before.
  19. That is truly terrible if they haven't contacted people who have bookings there to let them know the situation :( You could try The Ivy House or The Old Nun's Head, both of whom cater for childrens' parties, or the Community Centre in Darrell Road?

  21. She had a good innings though - 94. I really enjoyed her books, though the dialogue seemed to be written to advance the plot rather than to reflect how people actually speak ..... R.I.P. PD James.

Sorry Monkey, I didn't mean to imply they wouldn't find anything wrong at DMC, I meant in more general terms what would be the point of an inspection anywhere if no action was taken on what was found. Your experience sounds horrific and surely if they could not give you an immediate appointment they should have referred you elsewhere?

  24. I can't answer your question, just wanted to say you made my evening, thanks. What a heartwarming post.
  25. RosieH Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > But if you're going to post online, you need to > deal with it. People with thin skins should avoid > having opinions on the internet. I'm afraid this is true. Even if you consider you have a reasonably thickish skin you may find you are more sensitive than you think :( I tend to have strong opinions, and I too wouldn't say anything on here that I wouldn't say to somebody's face. I'm "out" on here (in the sense that it's easy to find out who I am in non-forum life), but most people aren't. And being subject to a personal attack on a forum by somebody who you wonder if it's somebody you have met in real life but you have no idea who they are is really quite horrible. Sorry, that was very ungrammatical :)
