I like the jumps, scratches etc because that's how I'm used to hearing the tracks in many cases. I wouldn't bother ripping classical music albums though, I'd replace those probably. A few of the sleeves I might keep to display for nostalgia's sake, maybe. But at present it's all taking up space which could be better used. And I never play any of it, but I probably would once it's ripped.

Or at least, what people were asking, which doesn't mean they're succeeding in selling them at that. It can really vary even between different versions of what is apparently the same CD. Admittedly many of mine are a bit obscure, being hardcore traditional folk :)) But even some CDs given free with music mags etc seems to be on sale for a lot more than I would have thought. Oh God, now I've got to start on my vinyl, that'll probably take another five years at the rate I've been going .... I did start doing it about - er - five years ago, mucking about with Audacity was starting to do my head in ....

I use FLAC because it's smaller than WAV but still lossless. However I don't use iTunes at all for anything. But anything I want to play on my car stereo I also have to rip as MP3 (or convert it later if I could be bothered) as it won't play FLAC files. Re backing up, I'm also somewhat paranoid about the possibility of two hard drives failing, even though it's unlikely, so belt and braces I use Carbonite as well. I'm not sure Carbonite is the best option actually, but I found it quite confusing comparing them all, so in the end I stuck with it.

I've just done it. Not keeping the CDs, but am backing up the whole of the digital collection to an external hard drive. I got this: http://www.cocktailaudio.com/home.html Very pleased with it so far and it gets loads of useful firmware updates which are automatic as long it's connected to the internet (which mine permanently is via a WiFi dongle). I'm not particularly attached to any physical items, though I am keeping a few of the CDs which have got a lot of info in the bookets.

It appears that it could be a problem with one of the graphics units, which is evidently a known defect with this model. ETA: I don't have the laptop here, it is with the person who is looking at it who has been noting various diagnostic signs, but thanks everybody. ETA: Fox. My OH neither smokes nor has spilt anything on his laptop. And maybe most manufacturing faults may show up during the warranty period, but it is just not true that all of them necessarily will.

Not sure what point you are making, Fox? Laptops sometimes go wrong however well they are looked after, as does anything with components which may fail.

Right-clicking, yes one of the first things tried (by me) and nothing happened. Dulwich Fox, ditto. Someone looking at it and it isn't looking good at the moment. Shaman it's an HP, not sure of model as it isn't here at the moment, not sure of exact age, maybe five years? He can't afford to replace it. I had to buy it to replace one I spilled wine over whilst DJing :(

Thanks Otta, trying to but he's out :)) Not sure if I could use my TV screen. I also once had the same problem, and it was the backlight that had failed. OH has tried shining a torch on the screen, but there is no sign of any display :( Edited again to say: Got someone looking at it now ....

Can anybody help with my OH's laptop problem? On start-up, light is coming on etc but screen is black. I don't have a separate monitor to connect his laptop to. Is there any way I can connect it to my laptop so that his display is shown on my laptop's screen? Trying to eliminate possible causes of the problem. Have tried F8 to start in safe mode but that hasn't worked. Thanks.

Finished the last of the Christmas cake and the sweet sherry a few days back. None of the chocolates etc lasted much beyond Christmas week :)) Stella went long ago, as did all the leftover white wine,fizzy wine, rum and brandy. Still got a bottle of dry sherry, ginger wine, several bottles of red and a bottle of gin. Oh, and about a stone of unwanted flab :))
